Reassessment of public awareness and prevention strategies for HIV and COVID-19 co-infections through epidemic modeling.

A co-infection model between HIV and COVID-19 that takes into account COVID-19 vaccination and public awareness is discussed in this article. Rigorous analysis of the model is conducted to establish the existence and local stability conditions of the single-infection models. We discover that when the corresponding reproduction number for COVID-19 and HIV exceeds one, the disease continues to exist in both single-infection models. Furthermore, HIV will always be eradicated if its reproduction number is less than one. Nevertheless, this does not apply to the single-infection COVID-19 model. Even

Temperature-based spatiotemporal heterogeneity of hand, foot, and mouth disease transmission in China.

BACKGROUND: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) remains an important public health issue in China with numerous studies showing significant association between temperature and the disease. Amid growing concerns of the impact of climate change on disease, we specifically explore the relationship between temperature and HFMD in mainland China to investigate and estimate key epidemiological parameters and potential heterogeneity. METHODS: We developed an integrated modeling approach that combined HFMD incidence data from 68 cities across 28 Chinese provinces and municipalities from 2013 to 2019

Mathematical modeling and analysis of COVID-19 and typhoid fever co-dynamics with treatment.

A deterministic mathematical model for COVID-19 and typhoid fever co-infection was developed and analyzed to assess the effects of treatment on the transmission and control of COVID-19 and typhoid fever in the community. The model incorporates both human and pathogen populations and is subjected to analytical scrutiny, including investigations into the existence, boundedness, and positivity of the solution. The study employs the Next-Generation Matrix Method to calculate the effective reproduction number [Formula: see text], and the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium point is exa

Dynamics of cholera transmission in poultry farm: insights from a compartmental model and control strategies.

1. Fowl cholera poses a significant challenge for poultry farms around the globe. The disease's high mortality in poultry affects economics for farmers.2. A susceptible-exposed-symptomatic-asymptomatic-treated-culled-recovered (SEIATCR) mathematical model was used to describe the dynamics of cholera transmission in poultry farms. This calculated the basic reproduction number (R_0) using a next-generation matrix; a mathematical tool used in population dynamics and epidemiology to calculate the basic reproduction number (R₀).3. The SEIATCR model was replicated using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg Meth

Understanding cholera dynamics in African countries with persistent outbreaks: a mathematical modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae, is a global health challenge, spreading through water in areas lacking clean water and sanitation. Since 2021, the reemergence of cholera cases has increased significantly in endemic regions in Africa. In particular, the continent experienced severe outbreaks between 2022 and 2024 due to droughts and cyclones, which have placed additional strain on healthcare systems. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the dynamics of cholera outbreaks in eight African countries using mathematical modeling and machine learning and to provide information f

A metapopulation model with exit screening measure for the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola virus outbreak.

We construct a new metapopulation model for the transmission dynamics and control of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in an environment characterized by considerable migrations and travels of people. It is an extended SEIR model modified by the addition of Quarantine and Isolated compartments to account for travelers who undergo the exit screening. The model is well-fitted by using the reported cases from the neighboring countries Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone where the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak simultaneously arose. We show that the unique disease-free equilibrium (DFE) of the model is unstabl

Co-infection mathematical model for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis with optimal control in Ethiopia.

The co-epidemics of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) outbreak is one of a serious disease in Ethiopia that demands integrative approaches to combat its transmission. In contrast, epidemiological co-infection models often considered a single latent case and recovered individuals with TB. To bridge this gap, we presented a new optimal HIV-TB co-infection model that considers both high risk and low risk latent TB cases with taking into account preventive efforts of both HIV and TB diseases, case finding for TB and HIV/AIDS treatment. This study aimed to develop optimal HIV/AIDS-TB co-infection math

Epidemiological inference for emerging viruses using segregating sites.

Epidemiological models are commonly fit to case and pathogen sequence data to estimate parameters and to infer unobserved disease dynamics. Here, we present an inference approach based on sequence data that is well suited for model fitting early on during the expansion of a viral lineage. Our approach relies on a trajectory of segregating sites to infer epidemiological parameters within a Sequential Monte Carlo framework. Using simulated data, we first show that our approach accurately recovers key epidemiological quantities under a single-introduction scenario. We then apply our approach to S

Bifurcation and optimal control analysis of HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 co-infection model with numerical simulation.

HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 co-infection is a common global health and socio-economic problem. In this paper, a mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 co-infection that incorporates protection and treatment for the infected (and infectious) groups is formulated and analyzed. Firstly, we proved the non-negativity and boundedness of the co-infection model solutions, analyzed the single infection models steady states, calculated the basic reproduction numbers using next generation matrix approach and then investigated the existence and local stabilities of equilibrium

A fractional modeling approach for the transmission dynamics of measles with double-dose vaccination.

Measles, a member of the Paramyxoviridae family and the Morbillivirus genus, is an infectious disease caused by the measles virus that is extremely contagious and can be prevented through vaccination. When a person with the measles coughs or sneezes, the virus is disseminated by respiratory droplets. Normally, the appearance of measles symptoms takes 10-14 d following viral exposure. Conjunctivitis, a high temperature, a cough, a runny nose, and a distinctive rash are some of the symptoms. Despite the measles vaccination being available, it is still widespread worldwide. To eradicate measles,

Estimating transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 at different intraspatial levels in an institutional outbreak.

INTRODUCTION: Large, localised outbreaks of COVID-19 have been repeatedly reported in high-density residential institutions. Understanding the transmission dynamics will inform outbreak response and the design of living environments that are more resilient to future outbreaks. METHODS: We developed an individual-based, multilevel transmission dynamics model using case, serology and symptom data from a 60-day cluster randomised trial of prophylaxes in a densely populated foreign worker dormitory in Singapore. Using Bayesian data augmentation, we estimated the basic reproduction number and the

The Impact of Lockdown, Patient Classification, and the Large-Scale Case Screening on the Spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Hubei.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) which emerged in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, is widely controlled now in China. However, the global epidemic is still severe. To study and comment on Hubei's approaches for responding to the disease, the paper considered some factors such as suspected cases (part of them are influenza patients or common pneumonia patients, etc.), quarantine, patient classification (three types), clinically diagnosed cases, and lockdown of Wuhan and Hubei. After that, the paper established an SELIHR model based on the surveillance data of Hubei published by the Hubei Healt

Mathematical analysis of a SIPC age-structured model of cervical cancer.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is the main causal factor of cervical cancer, infects normal cervical cells on the specific cell's age interval, i.e., between the G1 to S phase of cell cycle. Hence, the spread of the viruses in cervical tissue not only depends on the time, but also the cell age. By this fact, we introduce a new model that shows the spread of HPV infections on the cervical tissue by considering the age of cells and the time. The model is a four dimensional system of the first order partial differential equations with time and age independent variables, where the cells populat

Inference of malaria reproduction numbers in three elimination settings by combining temporal data and distance metrics.

Individual-level geographic information about malaria cases, such as the GPS coordinates of residence or health facility, is often collected as part of surveillance in near-elimination settings, but could be more effectively utilised to infer transmission dynamics, in conjunction with additional information such as symptom onset time and genetic distance. However, in the absence of data about the flow of parasites between populations, the spatial scale of malaria transmission is often not clear. As a result, it is important to understand the impact of varying assumptions about the spatial scal

The relation between host competence and vector-feeding preference in a multi-host model: Chagas and Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Vector-borne diseases that occur in humans, as well as in domestic and wild reservoir hosts, cause a significant concern in public health, veterinary health, and ecological health in bio-diverse environments. The majority of vector-borne zoonotic diseases are transmitted among diverse host species, but different hosts have their own ability to transmit pathogens and to attract vectors. These combined transmission mechanisms in hosts and vectors are often called "host competencies" and "vector-feeding preferences." The purpose of this research is to assess the relationship between the host's ab

A Mathematical Model for the Transmission Dynamics of Lymphatic Filariasis with Intervention Strategies.

This manuscript considers the transmission dynamics of lymphatic filariasis with some intervention strategies in place. Unlike previously developed models, our model takes into account both the exposed and infected classes in both the human and mosquito populations, respectively. We also consider vaccinated, treated and recovered humans in the presented model. The global dynamics of the proposed model are completely determined by the basic ([Formula: see text]) and effective reproduction numbers ([Formula: see text]). We then use Lyapunov function theory to find the sufficient conditions for g

Application of various control strategies to Japanese encephalitic: A mathematical study with human, pig and mosquito.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a public health problem that threats the entire world today. Japanese Encephalitis virus (JEV) mostly became a threat due to the significant number of increase of susceptible mosquito vectors and vertebrate hosts in Asia by which around 70,000 cases and 10,000 deaths per year took place in children below 15 years of age. In this paper, a mathematical model of JE due to JEV from the vector source (infected mosquito) and two vertebrate hosts (infected human and infected pig) is formulated. The disease can be controlled by applying several control measures such as va

Theoretical perspectives on the infectiousness of Ebola virus disease.

BACKGROUND: Ebola virus disease (EVD) has generated a large epidemic in West Africa since December 2013. This mini-review is aimed to clarify and illustrate different theoretical concepts of infectiousness in order to compare the infectiousness across different communicable diseases including EVD. METHODS: We employed a transmission model that rests on the renewal process in order to clarify theoretical concepts on infectiousness, namely the basic reproduction number, R0, which measures the infectiousness per generation of cases, the force of infection (i.e. the hazard rate of infection), the

Transmission potential and design of adequate control measures for Marburg hemorrhagic fever.

Marburg hemorrhagic fever is rare yet among the most severe diseases affecting humans, with case fatality ratio even higher than 80%. By analyzing the largest documented Marburg hemorrhagic fever epidemic, which occurred in Angola in 2005 and caused 329 deaths, and data on viral load over time in non-human primates, we make an assessment of transmissibility and severity of the disease. We also give insight into the control of new Marburg hemorrhagic fever epidemics to inform appropriate health responses. We estimated the distribution of the generation time to have mean 9 days (95%CI: 8.2-10 da

Influence of asymptomatic infections for the effectiveness of facemasks during pandemic influenza.

In this paper, the SEIR model is generalized by introducing an asymptomatic class to quantify the influence of wearing N95 facemasks in reducing the spread of influenza H1N1. What's more, we explain the control reproduction number Rc according to the biological meaning reasonably. Without any intervention, the basic reproduction number R0=1.83 and there will be a large outbreak of infectious diseases. If N95 facemasks are 50% effective in reducing susceptibility and infectivity, 50% of population wear them on the first day, the basic reproduction number will be decreased from 1.83 to 1.17 and
