Accretionary pedogenesis and Holocene climate evolution in black soil region of northeast China: Evidence from a sedimentary profile.

The black soil region of the Songnen Plain, one of the world's three major black soil belts, is critical for China's grain security, yet the formation mechanism of its thick, organic-rich soils remains insufficiently quantified. Here, we investigate the ZYHPM01 profile in the eastern Songnen Plain using grain-size end-member analysis (EMA), multi-proxy geochemical tracers, and coarse-grained quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. The EMA identifies three sedimentary components: EM1 represents distal background dust transported via high-altitude suspension; EM2 and EM3 indicate

Joint modeling with generalized item response theory model family and response time model: Enhancing model structural flexibility and data-fitting adequacy.

In this study, we propose a joint hierarchical model that combines a family of item response theory (IRT) models with a log-normal response time (RT) model to analyze item responses and response times. By incorporating RTs as auxiliary information, we improve the accuracy of latent trait estimation, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding of examinee performance. Additionally, we explore the use of either identical or distinct link functions across different items, allowing us to optimize IRT models for each item and improve overall model fit. We further investigate scenarios in which the

Evidence-Based Approaches to Quality Improvement: A Narrative Review of Integrating Bayesian Adaptive Trials Into Health Services.

RATIONALE: Quality improvement (QI) in health service programmes aims to make small, incremental changes to increase reach and efficiency. Simple, low-risk programmatic changes can improve services, particularly when supported by robust evidence. However, in health service contexts, there is tension between the need for swift decision-making and the high research standards for conducting methodologically rigorous trials. Randomized trials are rarely used to evaluate these changes due to high costs and long timelines, especially when the changes are expected to result in marginal improvements.

Bayesian approach for localizing cardiac sources in Magnetocardiography using Vectorcardiography based total variational priors.

The human heart produces electrical signals to contract and relax its muscles that helps in its blood pumping activities. These electrical impulses give rise to electric potentials on the body surface and tiny magnetic field around the thorax. These functional activities can be investigated using Electro/Magnetocardiogram (E/MCG). The more challenging task in the E/MCG research is to image the cardiac dysfunctions in three dimensions not at the surface level but at the source level and this is called the inverse problem. To solve this, one has to model a generic structure of the discretised he

Stage 2 Registered Report: Anomalous perception in a Ganzfeld condition - A meta-analysis of more than 40 years investigation.

This meta-analysis is an investigation into anomalous perception (i.e., conscious identification of information without any conventional sensorial means). The technique used for eliciting an effect is the Ganzfeld condition (a form of sensory homogenization that eliminates distracting peripheral noise). The database consists of studies published between January 1974 and December 2020 inclusive. The overall effect size estimated both with a frequentist and a Bayesian random-effect model, were in close agreement yielding an effect size of approximately .08 (.04 -.12). This result passed four pub

Minimum sample size for estimating the Net Promoter Score under a Bayesian approach.

At some moment in our lives, we are probably faced with the following question: How likely is it that you would recommend [company X] to a friend or colleague?. This question is related to the Net Promoter Score (NPS), a simple measure used by several companies as indicator of customer loyalty. Even though it is a well-known measure in the business world, studies that address the statistical properties or the sample size determination problem related to this measure are still scarce. We adopt a Bayesian approach to provide point and interval estimators for the NPS and discuss the determination

Short-term excess mortality following tropical cyclones in the United States.

Knowledge of excess deaths after tropical cyclones is critical to understanding their impacts, directly relevant to policies on preparedness and mitigation. We applied an ensemble of 16 Bayesian models to 40.7 million U.S. deaths and a comprehensive record of 179 tropical cyclones over 32 years (1988-2019) to estimate short-term all-cause excess deaths. The deadliest tropical cyclone was Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with 1491 [95% credible interval (CrI): 563, 3206] excess deaths (>99% posterior probability of excess deaths), including 719 [95% CrI: 685, 752] in Orleans Parish, LA (>99% probabil

Assessing the Evidential Value of Mental Fatigue and Exercise Research.

It has often been reported that mental exertion, presumably leading to mental fatigue, can negatively affect exercise performance; however, recent findings have questioned the strength of the effect. To further complicate this issue, an overlooked problem might be the presence of publication bias in studies using underpowered designs, which is known to inflate false positive report probability and effect size estimates. Altogether, the presence of bias is likely to reduce the evidential value of the published literature on this topic, although it is unknown to what extent. The purpose of the c

Interventions for reducing blood pressure in prehypertension: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to address which interventions best control blood pressure (BP) and delay disease progression in prehypertension and to give recommendations for the best option following a quality rating. METHODS: A Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to assess the effect of the intervention on BP reduction, delaying hypertension progression and final outcome, with subgroup analyses for time and ethnicity. Recommendations for interventions were finally based on cumulative ranking probabilities and CINeMA. RESULTS: From 22,559 relevant articles, 101 eligible randomized controlled tri

Global Estimate of Human Brucellosis Incidence.

Brucellosis is a major public health concern worldwide, especially for persons living in resource-limited settings. Historically, an evidence-based estimate of the global annual incidence of human cases has been elusive. We used international public health data to fill this information gap through application of risk metrics to worldwide and regional at-risk populations. We performed estimations using 3 statistical models (weighted average interpolation, bootstrap resampling, and Bayesian inference) and considered missing information. An evidence-based conservative estimate of the annual globa

Towards a leptospirosis early warning system in northeastern Argentina.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with a high burden in Latin America, including northeastern Argentina, where flooding events linked to El Niño are associated with leptospirosis outbreaks. The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of using hydrometeorological indicators to predict leptospirosis outbreaks in this region. We quantified the effects of El Niño, precipitation, and river height on leptospirosis risk in Santa Fe and Entre Ríos provinces between 2009 and 2020, using a Bayesian modelling framework. Based on several goodness of fit statistics, we selected candidate models using

Estimation of Parameters and Pooling in Nonlinear Flooding Event Scenarios with Bayesian Model.

Water-related tragedies are the highest common of all proven natural calamities and pose severe attacks on people and on socioeconomic status development. Due to the obvious controversy surrounding, their volume, location and time of incidence, geological swaths, and geophysical interrelations, flood events are difficult to completely control. Hence, complete flood prevention is always considered to be a viable choice. The specialized flood occurrences are investigated by developing a structural measure. In this paper, nonlinear flood event circumstance is determined by using a statistical Bay

Evolutionary aspect of Miltefosine transporter proteins in Leishmania major.

Transporter proteins, P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and P4ATPase-CDC50, are responsible for the transport of Miltefosine drug across cell membrane of a protozoan parasite Leishmania major. Mutations or change in activity of these proteins may lead to emergence of resistance in the parasite. Owing to the structural and functional importance of these transporter proteins, we have tried to decipher the evolutionary divergence of these Miltefosine transporter proteins across different forms of life including Protists, Fungi, Plants and Animals. We retrieved 96, 207, and 189 sequences of P-gp, P4ATPase and

Psychedelics and schizophrenia: Distinct alterations to Bayesian inference.

Schizophrenia and states induced by certain psychotomimetic drugs may share some physiological and phenomenological properties, but they differ in fundamental ways: one is a crippling chronic mental disease, while the others are temporary, pharmacologically-induced states presently being explored as treatments for mental illnesses. Building towards a deeper understanding of these different alterations of normal consciousness, here we compare the changes in neural dynamics induced by LSD and ketamine (in healthy volunteers) against those associated with schizophrenia, as observed in resting-sta

Explanation and Use of Uncertainty Quantified by Bayesian Neural Network Classifiers for Breast Histopathology Images.

Despite the promise of Convolutional neural network (CNN) based classification models for histopathological images, it is infeasible to quantify its uncertainties. Moreover, CNNs may suffer from overfitting when the data is biased. We show that Bayesian-CNN can overcome these limitations by regularizing automatically and by quantifying the uncertainty. We have developed a novel technique to utilize the uncertainties provided by the Bayesian-CNN that significantly improves the performance on a large fraction of the test data (about 6% improvement in accuracy on 77% of test data). Further, we pr

Influence of Weather Conditions on the Intercity Travel Mode Choice: A Case of Xi'an.

To explore the influence of weather conditions on the choice of the intercity travel mode of travelers, four modes of traveler transportation were studied in Xi'an, China, in March 2019: airplane, high-speed rail, conventional train, and express bus. The individual characteristics of travelers and intercity travel activity data were obtained, and they were matched with the weather characteristics at the departure time of the travelers. The Bayesian multinomial logit regression was employed to explore the relationship between the travel mode choice and weather characteristics. The results showe

A predictive processing framework of tool use.

In this paper I introduce the theory of predictive processing as a unifying conceptual framework to account for the human ability to use and innovate tools. I explain the basic concepts of predictive processing and illustrate how this framework accounts for the development of tool use in young infants and for findings in the neuropsychological and neuroscientific literature. Then, I argue that the predictive processing model needs to be complemented with a functional-evolutionary perspective, according to which the developmental and neurocognitive mechanisms should be understood in relation to

Auditory experience, for a certain duration, is a prerequisite for tinnitus: lessons from subjects with unilateral tinnitus in the better-hearing ear.

Tinnitus has traditionally been considered an otologic disorder; however, recent advances in auditory neuroscience have shifted investigations toward the brain. The Bayesian brain model explains tinnitus as an auditory phantom percept. According to the model, the brain works to reduce environmental uncertainty, and thus the absence of auditory information due to hearing loss may cause auditory phantom percepts, i.e., tinnitus. As in animal studies, our recent human observational study revealed the absence of ipsilesional tinnitus in subjects with congenital single-sided deafness, suggesting th

The Bayesian brain in imbalance: Medial, lateral and descending pathways in tinnitus and pain: A perspective.

Tinnitus and pain share similarities in their anatomy, pathophysiology, clinical picture and treatments. Based on what is known in the pain field, a heuristic model can be proposed for the pathophysiolgy of tinnitus. This heuristic pathophysiological model suggests that pain and tinnitus are the consequence of an imbalance between two pain/tinnitus evoking pathways, i.e., a lateral sensory pathway and a medial affective pathway, both of which are not balanced anymore by a pain/noise inhibitory pathway. Mechanistically, based on the Bayesian brain concept, it can be explained by a switch occuri
