Morphological and Molecular Characterisation of a New Species of Parastrongyloides (Rhabditida: Strongyloididae) from the Short-Beaked Echidna Tachyglossus aculeatus from Western Australia.

INTRODUCTION: A new species of the nematode genus Parastrongyloides Morgan, 1928 was found in the caecum of six short-beaked echidnas Tachyglossus aculeatus (Shaw, 1792) collected from southwestern Australia between August 1964 and March 2020. METHODS: Specimens were prepared for microscopic examination as temporary wet mounts, measurements were made using an Olympus DP71 camera with cellSens standard software, figures were drawn using a drawing tube and light micrographs taken. DNA was extracted using a Qiagen blood and tissue kit, amplified targeting the COX1 gene region. Sequences obtained

Anisakid nematodes in beaked redfish (Sebastes mentella) from three fishing grounds in the North Atlantic, with special notes on distribution in the fish musculature.

Parasitic anisakid nematodes commonly occur in the musculature and visceral organs of many fish species from the North Atlantic. In this respect, the presence of the third stage larvae of Anisakis spp. in the fish musculature may pose a potential consumer hazard due to the parasite's ability to cause anisakidosis. Thus, knowledge on the occurrence and distribution of these potentially zoonotic parasites in the commercially important North Atlantic fish species is crucial in order to evaluate and consequently prevent human infections. In the present study, 300 Sebastes mentella from three North

Pathological Findings in White-Beaked Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) and Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus acutus) From the South-Eastern North Sea.

In the North Sea, white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) occur regularly and are the second most common cetacean in the area, while their close relative, the Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus), prefers the deeper waters of the northern North Sea and adjacent Atlantic Ocean. Though strandings of both species have occurred regularly in the past three decades, they have decreased in the southern North Sea during the last years. Studies describing necropsy findings in stranded Lagenorhynchus spp. are, to date, still scarce, while information gained through post-mortem

Beak condition and cage density determine abundance and spatial distribution of northern fowl mites, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, and chicken body lice, Menacanthus stramineus, on caged laying hens.

Adult White Leghorn hens (Hy-Line strain W-36) were inoculated with either northern fowl mites or chicken body lice, and the ectoparasite populations were monitored over periods of 9 to 16 wk. Two beak conditions (beak trimmed or beak intact) and 2 housing densities (1 or 2 hens per 25 × 31 cm suspended wire cage) were tested. Populations of both ectoparasites were at least 10 times lower on beak-intact hens compared with populations on beak-trimmed hens. Cage density did not influence mite numbers, but higher numbers of lice (2 to 3 times) developed on hens held at the higher cage density. Lo

Risk Factors for Ineffectiveness of Posterior Decompression and Dekyphotic Corrective Fusion with Instrumentation for Beak-Type Thoracic Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament: A Single Institute Study.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (T-OPLL) is treated surgically with instrumented posterior decompression and fusion. However, the factors determining the outcome of this approach and the efficacy of additional resection of T-OPLL are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To identify these factors in a prospective study at a single institution. METHODS: The subjects were 70 consecutive patients with beak-type T-OPLL who underwent posterior decompression and dekyphotic fusion and had an average of 4.8 years of follow-up (minimum of 2 years). Of these patients, 4 (6%; gro

Anisakis nascettii n. sp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) from beaked whales of the southern hemisphere: morphological description, genetic relationships between congeners and ecological data.

A new anisakid nematode, Anisakis nascettii n. sp., is described from beaked whales Mesoplodon spp. off the coast of New Zealand and South Africa. Morphological and molecular (allozymes and mtDNA cox2 sequence) data were used for diagnostic and identification purposes. Among the 19 allozymes studied, 10 were found to be unique and characteristic for A. nascettii n. sp. Analysis of allozymes demonstrated reproductive isolation from A. ziphidarum Paggi, Nascetti, Webb, Mattiucci, Cianchi & Bullini, 1998 and mtDNA cox2 sequences depict this Anisakis species as a distinct and unique entity. Comparative ultrastructure characterization of the oropharyngeal cavity floor (lower beak, tongue, laryngeal entrance) of the newly hatched domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) and Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata).

The scant information about the oropharyngeal cavity floor of the newly hatched Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) and domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) encouraged us to perform the first comparative anatomical features of their oropharyngeal cavity floors (lower beak, tongue, laryngeal entrance) to provide a comprehensive comparative view of their feeding filtering apparatus using scanning electron microscopy. Both species share features, including the round apex with its small, spatula-like nail, lingual comb, lingual sulcus, and laryngeal mound. At the same time, there are certain

First report on Phyllobothrium delphini infection and Crassicauda sp. parasitism resulting in osseous metaplasia in a Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) from the Brazilian region.

A female Cuvier's Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris) specimen measuring 580 cm in length died after being stranded in Southeastern Brazil. Following a necropsy, organ samples were obtained, fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin and histopathologically analyzed. A severe and generalized hypodermis infection by Phyllobothrium delphini (Phyllobothriidae) was observed, resulting in granulomatous panniculitis. Severe renal and arterial lesions were also noted, including a severe bone metaplasia in the aorta artery, associated with a massive infection by Crassicauda sp, (Tetrameridae). A significan

Occurrence and patterns of legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in bones of white-beaked dolphin (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) using target, suspect, and non-target screening.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread, resistant to degradation, and bioaccumulative in food webs, raising environmental concerns due to their toxic effects. This growing concern highlights the need for effective biomonitoring for PFAS contamination, including exploration of complementary matrices, to enable long-term retrospective analyses. This study aimed to demonstrate the potential usefulness of white-beaked dolphin bones from 32 individuals stranded along the Danish coasts during the period 1981-2019 in assessing PFAS pollution in marine environments, employing target

Modelling the effect of varying metabolic rate and cardiac output on estimated tissue and blood O2 and CO2 levels in an extreme deep-diver, the goose-beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris).

High-resolution movement data from Cuvier's beaked, or goose-beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris, hereafter Ziphius, n = 8) tag deployments (4.1-19.2 days) were used to estimate blood and tissue O2 and CO2 levels. Acceleration and magnetometry data were used to estimate the locomotion cost (LC) from the relationship between activity and the O2 consumption rate. We estimated that the diving metabolic rate (DMR) decreased with increasing dive duration, ranging from 6.18 mL O2 min-1 kg-1 for very short dives (<1.0 min) to 1.65 mL O2 min-1 kg-1 and 2.06 mL O2 min-1 kg-1 for intermediate (>17.5 and ≤

TOTAL MAXILLARY BEAK RECONSTRUCTION IN A SOLOMON'S COCKATOO (CACATUA DUCORPSII) BY USING A SKULL-ANCHORED TITANIUM MESH PLATE PROSTHESIS: A NOVEL SURGICAL APPROACH OVERCOMING KERATIN-DEPENDENT FIXATION LIMITATIONS-A CASE REPORT.

Traumatic total maxillary beak avulsion in psittacines presents a significant surgical challenge due to the absence of residual keratinized or osseous tissue for conventional fixation, as well as the beak's critical roles in feeding and behavior. Existing repair techniques rely on anchoring to remaining beak structures and are therefore unsuitable for complete beak loss cases. This report describes a novel surgical approach for total maxillary beak reconstruction in a Solomon's cockatoo (Cacatua ducorpsii) with complete upper beak avulsion caused by intraspecific aggression. A titanium mesh pl

Sublingual and subpharyngeal floor, beak, and palate of the local Egyptian ISA Brown Hen (Gallus gallus Domesticus): gross, morphometric, and scanning electron microscopic features with new insights into their nutritional adaptations.

This study is the first attempt to describe the morphological features of the sublingual and subpharyngeal floor, beak, and palate of the Egyptian ISA Brown Hen using gross and SEM examinations. The rostral part of the lower beak, not occupied by the tongue, was organized into three areas: rostral papillary-teeth-like, non-ridged, and ridged. The sublingual part has a median ridge and two sublingual gland openings; the large round openings are along the ridge, while the small ovoid openings are along each half. The sublaryngeal region contained three sublaryngeal ridges. The oropharyngeal roof

Development of a duplex semi-nested PCR assay for detection of classical goose parvovirus and novel goose parvovirus-related virus in sick or dead ducks with short beak and dwarfism syndrome.

Duck short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by a novel goose parvovirus-related virus (NGPV) in China. Until now, it remains uncertain whether the Cherry Valley ducks and mule ducks with SBDS are co-infected with classical goose parvovirus (GPV) and NGPV. In this study, a duplex semi-nested PCR assay with high specificity and sensitivity was developed for detection of the two viruses. Using the duplex PCR assay, NGPV was tested positive in all the 15 duck flocks with SBDS, whereas classical GPV was not detected in all the 133 sick and dead ducks collec
