In contrast to fungal dermatitis, fungal glossitis and disseminated visceral mycosis, fungal infection of the lung has so far rarely been described in reptiles. Pulmonary fungal granulomas were diagnosed histopathologically within the scope of post mortem examinations. Fragments of the 18S-internal transcribed spacer1-5.8S rDNA (SSU-ITS1-5.8S) and 28S rDNA (LSU), including domains (D)1 and D2 as well as the protein coding gene translation elongation factor 1 alpha (TEF) were used for phylogenetical analysis after isolation of the fungal pathogen by culturing. Ten reptiles, including lizards (n

Insects and other arthropods appear in pharmacopoeias of Korean traditional medicine, but little was known about their use in modern South Korea. Interviews were conducted with 20 traditional medicine doctors at clinics in South Korea's Kyeong Dong Shijang in Seoul--one of the world's largest traditional drug markets--to learn about current patterns of usage. Seventeen products are prescribed and the use of arthropod drugs is stable or increasing. Centipedes (Scolopendra spp.) used primarily to treat arthritis and the silk moth fungus (Beauveria bassiana, which infects silk moth larvae) used m

Recent research has indicated that fungal biopesticides could augment existing malaria vector control tools. Here we present a set of methodologies to monitor the in vivo kinetics of entomopathogenic fungi in Anopheles in the presence or absence of malaria parasites using quantitative real-time PCR. Three qPCR assays were successfully developed for counting fungal genomes: "specific" assays capable of distinguishing two well characterized fungal entomopathogens Beauveria bassiana isolate IMI391510 and Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum isolate IMI330189, both of which have previously been sho

The development of antimelanogenic agents is important for the prevention of serious aesthetic problems such as melasmas, freckles, age spots, and chloasmas. In the course of screening for melanin synthesis inhibitors, we found that the culture broth from an insect morphopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana CS1029, exhibits potent antimelanogenic activity. We isolated and purified an active metabolite and identified it as S-(-)-10,11-dihydroxyfarnesoic acid methyl ester (dhFAME), an insect juvenile hormone. To address whether dhFAME inhibits melanin synthesis, we first measured the size of th

Pathogenic microbes deploy secreted effectors to subvert host immunity and physiology across kingdom boundaries, yet the molecular mechanisms that maintain effector competence during this transition remain poorly defined. Here, we identify MrNIS1, an effector from the insect-pathogenic fungus Metarhizium robertsii whose stability and secretion are governed by K24 acetylation through physical association with the acetyltransferase MrKAT1 and the deacetylase MrSIR2. Once inside the insect, MrNIS1 acts as a dual-targeting effector to disrupt distinct physiological pathways. It binds the serine pr

Free-living amoebae (FLAs) of the genus Acanthamoeba are opportunistic protozoa found in diverse environments. They can cause granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, especially in immunocompromised individuals, and Acanthamoeba keratitis, a painful corneal infection frequently associated with contact lens wearers. Effective treatments for Acanthamoeba infections are limited, with nitroimidazoles as the main pharmacological option, a class of drugs generally associated with side effects. Given the limited availability of vaccines and the low efficacy of existing drugs, the search for new therapeuti

Fungal organisms play a major role in the contamination and biodeterioration of natural history museum collections and cultural heritage as a whole, leading to the potential loss of key knowledge preserved by these. As part of the ongoing efforts to study the fungal contaminations observed in the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra (Portugal) collections, eight taxidermized birds were sampled and 27 fungal isolates were retrieved. A comprehensive analysis of these isolates led to the identification of 14 different species belonging to 13 different genera, with Aspergillus accounting fo

Some parasites have evolved the ability to adaptively manipulate host behavior. One notable example is the fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis sensu lato, which has evolved the ability to alter the behavior of ants in ways that enable fungal transmission and lifecycle completion. Because host mandibles are affected by the fungi, we focused on understanding changes in the metabolites of muscles during behavioral modification. We used High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass/Mass (HPLC-MS/MS) to detect the metabolite difference between controls and O. unilateralis-infected ants. There was a si

A study was undertaken to see whether the principal airborne fungi in the North-East Netherlands were also found to be the most reactive in skin testing. Atmospheric samples were taken weekly with the Andersen sampler, from April 1981, up to and including, June 1983. At the same time skin tests of 833 patients referred to the outpatient Departments of Pulmonology and Allergology, because of recurrent bronchial obstructive complaints and a suspected allergy, were studied for strongly positive skin reactivity to fungi. 4.6% of the patients reacted with a wheal of 10 mm diameter or more to one or

Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb., is a destructive vascular disease that is difficult to control using chemical fungicides and remains a major challenge in plant disease management. Microbial biocontrol represents a sustainable alternative, and the identification of highly antagonistic strains against V. dahliae is of considerable importance. In this study, a strain of Talaromyces purpureogenus TS, which demonstrated strong antagonistic and mycoparasitic activity against V. dahliae, was isolated from soil. Its cell-free supernatant inhibited the growth of V. dahliae by d

Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda is a major pest of maize that causes substantial yield losses and necessitates effective and sustainable control strategies. In this study, nine entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) were isolated from naturally infected FAW larvae collected from maize fields in Lampung, Indonesia. Molecular and morphological identification revealed the isolates as Penicillium citrinum, Penicillium expansum, Aspergillus flavus, Cladosporium tenuissimum, Geosmithia pallida, Beauveria bassiana, and Sarocladium zeae. Bioassays demonstrated that S. zeae, P. expansum, and C. tenuis

Nine isolates of the entomopathogenic deuteromycetes Metarhizium anisopliae, Beauveria bassiana, Verticillium lecanii, Nomuraea rileyi, and Aschersonia aleyrodis produced basic (pI greater than 7.0) chymoelastases that possessed extended binding sites, comprising at least four or five subsites, with preference for hydrophobic residues at the primary binding site. Most isolates also produced additional acidic enzymes with similar specificities against ester and amide substrates but which lacked activity against elastin. Both acidic and basic enzymes degraded high protein azure or locust cuticle

BACKGROUND: The Toll signaling pathway is a key component of insect innate immunity, yet its role in hemipteran vectors and their interactions with plant pathogens remains poorly understood. The potato psyllid (Bactericera cockerelli), an important agricultural pest in the USA, transmits two haplotypes of 'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' (LsoA and LsoB) that cause severe diseases in solanaceous crops.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We characterized Toll pathway components in the B. cockerelli genome and examined their transcriptional responses during pathogen acquisition. Six Toll receptors and t

Competition is one of the fundamental driving forces of natural selection. Beauveria bassiana is a soil and plant phylloplane/root fungus capable of parasitizing insect hosts. Soil and plant environments are often enriched with other fungi against which B. bassiana competes for survival. Here, we report an antifungal peptide (BbAFP1), specifically expressed and localized to the conidial cell wall and is released into the surrounding microenvironment inhibiting growth of competing fungi. B. bassiana strains expressing BbAFP1, including overexpression strains, inhibited growth of Alternaria bras

Coffee berry borer (CBB) is the Worlds most devastating coffee pest causing an estimated US$500 million worth of losses annually through damage and control costs. Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae have been employed to control this pest but their low virulence (slow kill and large inoculums) is an important factor constraining their use. M. anisopliae (AaIT-Ma549) has been modified to express the scorpion toxin (AaIT) in insect hemolymph and this greatly increased pathogenicity against Manduca sexta and Aedes aegypti. Here, we demonstrate that AaIT-Ma549 was also dramatically more

Pathogenic fungi endure host impose copper starvation by tightly coordinating trace metal homeostasis. However, how pathogens synchronize endogenous metal recycling with exogenous copper uptake to promote infection remains enigmatic. Using the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana, we uncovered a synergistic regulatory network that prioritizes nuclear copper enrichment during conidial germination. Under copper deprivation, the fungus deploys a highly coordinated dual-track survival strategy. In the cytoplasm, the core autophagy protein BbAtg8 drives autophagic flux, specifically triggerin

Defensive symbioses in which beneficial microbes protect hosts from natural enemies are ubiquitous across animals and plants, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Field surveys and laboratory assays revealed that infection of the invasive whitefly Bemisia tabaci by the bacterial symbiont Rickettsia and plant begomovirus were positively correlated with each other but each negatively correlated with a parasitic fungal infection (Beauveria bassiana) in the host. We show that begomovirus conferred whitefly's resistance to the parasitic fungus by triggering the expression of chit

Two large groups of bone and joint mycoses should be recognised: fungal osteoarthritis due to blood spread and osteoarthritis due to traumatic inoculation. The authors report data in the literature and the experience of the Mycology unit of the Pasteur Institute. In the first group, one may recognise a category of cosmopolitan, opportunist fungi (Candida, cryptococcus) becoming grafted on a background of iatrogenic factors, in particular, Candida albicans arthritis of the newborn (2 new cases have been added to 12 already described in the literature) and osteoarthritis (17 cases) and candida s

Four patients with chronic mucocutaneous candidosis from early infancy were treated successfully with ketoconazole given orally. All thrush lesions were clinically and mycologically cured within a few days of treatment with 100-400 micrograms of ketoconazole daily; skin lesions were cured within a few weeks, and nails were cured after about three months of treatment. Delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity to candidin was acquired by the third month. Cellular and humoral immunologic responses were related to the suppression of Candida albicans antigen by ketoconazole. A fifth patient with chronic l

The superoxide dismutase (SOD) family of Metarhizium robertsii, a fungal insect pathogen, comprises six members functionally unknown yet, including Cu/ZnSODs (Sod1/5/6), MnSODs (Sod2/3), and FeSOD (Sod4). Here, we show a mitochondrial localization of Sod3 and Sod4 and a requirement of either sod4 or sod6 for the fungal life as suggested by an inability to be deleted. We found remarked roles of Sod1, Sod2, and Sod3 in sustaining antioxidant activity and the fungal potential against insect pests but no role of Sod5 in all examined phenotypes. Intracellular SOD activity decreased by 49% in Δsod1
