Health Effects of Bee Products: A Comprehensive Review.

Honey, bee pollen, propolis, bee bread, royal jelly, bee venom, beeswax, and apilarnil are among the bee-derived products that may serve health-related purposes, as they exhibit various biological activities such as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, vasodilatory, and blood pressure-lowering effects. In this review, the possible health effects and action mechanisms of bee products frequently used in apitherapy were examined. The therapeutic potential of bee-derived products is attributed to their content of amino acids, fatty acids, carbohydrates,

Corneal bee sting injury: a clinical conundrum.

This study outlines the clinical features and comprehensive management of three cases of corneal injury by a bee sting. The stinger removal was attempted, and in two cases, the stinger was successfully removed. In one case, a portion of the stinger broke and was left in situ without inciting any further inflammation. In all the cases, the surrounding infiltrate was scraped, and after microbiological evaluation was found to be negative, topical corticosteroids were started. The management of corneal bee sting injuries should include appropriate surgical intervention along with the judicious use

500 bee stings in a single fatal encounter.

Incidences of multiple bee stings have been increasing globally; the substantial amount of bee venom injected in such incidents can result in anaphylactic shock, rhabdomyolysis and renal failure, proving fatal in some cases. While anaphylactic reactions are more common and have established treatment protocols, inflammatory response induced by the venom demands a tailored approach. Here we report a case of a 70-year-old male in India who succumbed from approximately 500 bee stings. Based on our literature review, this case stands out as one of the first reported fatalities caused by 500 bee sti

The potential neuroprotective effects of stingless bee honey.

Tropical Meliponini bees produce stingless bee honey (SBH). Studies have shown beneficial properties, including antibacterial, bacteriostatic, anti-inflammatory, neurotherapeutic, neuroprotective, wound, and sunburn healing capabilities. High phenolic acid and flavonoid concentrations offer SBH its benefits. SBH can include flavonoids, phenolic acids, ascorbic acid, tocopherol, organic acids, amino acids, and protein, depending on its botanical and geographic origins. Ursolic acid, p-coumaric acid, and gallic acid may diminish apoptotic signals in neuronal cells, such as nuclear morphological

Bee Attack or Heart Attack: Kounis Syndrome.

Kounis syndrome (KS) is defined as an allergic or hypersensitivity reaction leading to coronary vasospasm and acute coronary syndrome. The inflammatory mediators released during the body's reaction to an allergen causes vasoconstriction, plaque rupture, platelet aggregation, and even thrombosis of an existing coronary stent. Over the years, many allergens including drugs, environmental exposures, and animal and insect bites have been implicated in KS. Patients may present with elevated cardiac enzymes and electrocardiographic changes. We describe a case of a patient with no prior cardiac histo

Toxicity of cryoprotectants to honey bee semen and queens.

Given the threats to the intraspecific biodiversity of Apis mellifera and the pressure on bee breeding to come up with disease-tolerant lines, techniques to cryopreserve drone semen are of great interest. Freeze-thawed drone semen of high viability and/or motility has repeatedly been obtained, but fertility of such semen, when it was measured, was always low. The cryoprotective agent (CPA) most frequently used with drone semen is dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), although this substance has been suspected of causing genetic damage in sperm. No form of sperm washing is currently performed. Using a mem

Corneal bee sting misdiagnosed as viral keratitis.

PURPOSE: To report a case of chronic keratouveitis caused by a missed bee sting injury. METHODS: A 17-year-old boy was referred for management of unresponsive viral keratouveitis. Ocular examination revealed corneal edema and scarring, atrophic patches on the iris, and anterior polar cataracts. Surprisingly, examination also revealed a retained intracorneal bee stinger. A retrospective inquiry confirmed a bee sting injury 2 years ago. RESULTS: The patient was started on medical treatment and underwent operative removal of the bee stinger. Postsurgery, visual acuity improved, and the corneal

Social reversal of immunosenescence in honey bee workers.

A striking example of immunosenescence is seen in the honey bee (Apis mellifera) worker caste. The bees' age-associated transition from hive duties to more risky foraging activities is linked to a dramatic decline in immunity. Explicitly, it has been shown that an increase in the juvenile hormone (JH) level, which accompanies onset of foraging behavior, induces extensive hemocyte death through nuclear pycnosis. Here, we demonstrate that foragers that are forced to revert to hive-tasks show reversal of immunosenescence, i.e. a recovery of immunity with age. This recovery, which is triggered by

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis after bee sting.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) usually follows a viral infection or an immunization and is thought to be an immunomediated disease. We describe a patient with ADEM after multiple yellow jacket bee stings. The patient recovered after treatment with a high dose of methylprednisolone. Although the pathologic mechanism exact remains unclear, potential cross-reactivity between bee toxins and the central nervous system myelin could induce demyelination. ADEM should be considered a rare complication of bee stings.

[A case of unusual occupational allergy to bee venom].

The authors discuss an exceptional case of allergy to bee venom in a zoo-technician working on a morphological analysis of bees. During her work, the zoo-technician was repeatedly stung, initially with only small local reaction. After six-year period of work, the symptoms that followed stinging had all the characteristics of general oedema. Next years of exposure to bee venom resulted in collapse in the patient. Allergological examinations indicated work-related hypersensitivity to bee venom. The case history was supplemented with prophylactic recommendations. General principles of controlling

Case report. Bee sting brachial block.

A case of brachial plexus block is presented, following a bee sting in the posterior triangle of the neck. The onset of neurological symptoms was rapid as was their subsequent resolution. Delayed peripheral neurological symptoms believed to have an immunological basis have been reported in response to stings from bees and other Hymenoptera both in the central and peripheral nervous systems (Goldstein et al., 1960; Means et al., 1973; Bachman et al., 1982; Weatherall et al., 1987; Van Antwerpen et al., 1988), but to the authors' knowledge no similar case of immediate peripheral block has been r

Enzymes of bee venom, sac and whole body.

By using the Api-Zym System 55 enzymes were determined to be present in bee venom, venom sac, sacless whole body extract and whole body commercial extracts. Acid phosphatase activity was high in bee venom and sacless whole body extracts. Arylamidase activities were elevated in sacless whole body extracts and very low or undetectable in venoms. Conversely, glycyl-prolin arylamidase activity was high in venoms and very low in the other extracts.

Hymenoptera sting hypersensitivy: IgE, IgG and haemagglutinating antibodies to bee venom constituents in relation to exposure and clinical reaction to bee stings.

High levels of IgE antibodies (Ab) to bee venom constituents were mainly found in patients with bee sting hypersensitivity, whereas the sera of bee keepers usually contained high levels of IgG Ab and haemagglutinins, representing blocking antibody activity. In bee keepers there was a positive correlation between the degree of severity of an adverse reaction to bee stings and IgE Ab, a negative one between the severity of reaction and IgG Ab and haemagglutinins, a positive one between the number of stings per season and IgG Ab and haemagglutinins, and negative one between the number of stings a

Leveling the head relative to ground slope improves visual odometry in simulated bees.

In honeybees, foragers use the waggle dance to communicate the direction and 'a distance' to a food source from the hive to other members of the colony. Behavioral studies indicate that dancing foragers estimate this 'distance' during outward flights (from the hive to the food source) based on visual cues, in particular optic flow, even over mountain slopes. While optic flow-based biologically plausible models for the honeybee visual odometer were previously presented, their robustness with respect to uneven terrain has not yet been investigated. In this study, we present a new model for the h

Bacteriophage therapy against American foulbrood in honey bees: a PRISMA-guided systematic review.

American foulbrood (AFB), caused by the spore-forming bacterium Paenibacillus larvae, is the most destructive bacterial brood disease of Apis mellifera. Control is challenging because endospores persist for decades and antibiotic use is restricted by regulations, resistance, and residue concerns. Bacteriophages have re-emerged as a species-specific, residue-free strategy for AFB prevention and treatment. A PRISMA-guided systematic review was conducted searching PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science using the terms (bacteriophage OR phage) AND (honeybee OR Apis mellifera). A total of 90 records we

Photoreceptor recordings reveal remarkable acuity in small solitary bees compared with larger species.

Bees rely strongly on visual cues for essential tasks such as avoiding predators, targeting mates, and navigating their environment. However, physiological measures of photoreceptor acuity in bees remain scarce. Here, we used intracellular recordings in light-adapted eyes to estimate photoreceptor receptive fields (angular sensitivity, Δρ) and detectability thresholds in compound eyes of both sexes in four bee species. We recorded from the bumblebee Bombus terrestris; two closely related but biogeographically distant apid species, Anthophora quadrimaculata and Amegilla murrayensis; and the sol

Fending for Thyself: Honey Bees From Ethiopia Inflict Physical Damage on Varroa destructor.

The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor and its associated viruses threaten the health of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.). Yet, African populations survive mite infestations without miticide treatment largely due to social immunity behaviors. However, little is known about these defense mechanisms in A. m. simensis populations from the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study investigated grooming and hygienic behaviors across lowland, midland, and highland areas during the wet and dry seasons in this region. Grooming behavior was quantified by measuring adult mite infestation rates, da
