Evaluating Technologies to Identify Fentanyl and Adulterants in Street Drug Paraphernalia: Qualitative Perspectives of Service Providers and Their Clientele.

Background: Opioid overdose deaths continue to present major public health challenges in the U.S. Harm reduction agencies have begun using drug checking technologies to identify adulterants in the local drug supply and reduce overdose risk among people who use drugs (PWUD). Through qualitative and ethnographic methods, we assess the use of portable mass spectrometers at a harm reduction agency in a Northeastern U.S. city. Methods: We conducted participant observation, and on-the-spot qualitative interviews with harm-reduction staff members (n = 10) and their clientele (n = 17) between May 2019

Candida albicans biofilms: comparative analysis of room-temperature and cryofixation for scanning electron microscopy.

Biofilms are frequently related to invasive fungal infections and are reported to be more resistant to antifungal drugs than planktonic cells. The structural complexity of the biofilm as well as the presence of a polymeric extracellular matrix (ECM) is thought to be associated with this resistant behavior. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after room temperature glutaraldehyde-based fixation, have been used to study fungal biofilm structure and drug susceptibility but they usually fail to preserve the ECM and, therefore, are not an optimised methodology to understand the complexity of the fun

Safety and efficacy of two reduced dosing regimens of sodium phosphate tablets for preparation prior to colonoscopy.

Multimodal artificial intelligence (MMAI) is transforming biomedicine by integrating heterogeneous data, e.g., images, speech, behavior, physiological signals, and text, into unified representational spaces. This enables powerful cross-modal inference and data synthesis, with potential gains in diagnostic accuracy, early detection, and patient support. However, these capabilities introduce ethical challenges that exceed existing AI governance frameworks. MMAI can infer sensitive information without patient awareness, and can convert such inferences into new data objects (e.g., images, clinical

Quantitative analysis of cancer cell morphology using digital holography technology under high temperature stimulation.

In cancer tissue diagnostic studies of clinical medicine, cell morphology is a key indicator for assessing the behavior of cellular physiological activities. Currently, the method of using thermotherapy as an adjunct to cancer treatment has gradually become a trend. Assessing the morphological characteristics of wound tissue cells during the hyperthermia process is particularly important for providing feedback on the therapeutic efficacy of hyperthermia-assisted treatment. Among the existing cell observation techniques, optical bright-field microscopy can only perform static observations of ce

Determination of drug toxicity using 3D spheroids constructed from an immortal human hepatocyte cell line.

Numerous publications have documented that the immortal cells grown in three-dimensional (3D) cultures possess physiological behavior, which is more reminiscent of their parental organ than when the same cells are cultivated using classical two-dimensional (2D) culture techniques. The goal of this study was to investigate whether this observation could be extended to the determination of LD(50) values and whether 3D data could be correlated to in vivo observations. We developed a noninvasive means to estimate the amount of protein present in a 3D spheroid from it is planar area (± 21%) so that

An introduction to the methodological corpus of systematic observation and its quality assessment.

Observational methodology (OM) has evolved into a rigorous and flexible mixed-methods framework for studying spontaneous behavior in natural settings. By systematically recording behavioral streams and converting qualitative data into quantitative parameters, OM provides ecologically valid evidence often unattainable in experimental designs. This article presents a comprehensive methodological framework that synthesizes the conceptual, methodological, and analytical foundations of OM, along with recent advances in quality assessment. It traces OM's evolution from qualitative traditions to a ma

Effects of outdoor housing on self-injurious and stereotypic behavior in adult male rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

We examined the effects of outdoor housing on self-injurious and stereotypic behavior in adult male rhesus macaques with a history of self-wounding that were previously singly housed indoors for at least 4 y prior to the study. Baseline behavioral observations were collected over 2.5 mo. In phase 1, animals were relocated outdoors in 1 of 2 experimental conditions, group-housed (n = 8) or single-housed (n = 5), for 6 wk. In phase 2, group-housed animals were observed outdoors for an additional 6 wk. Behavioral observations were done using focal sampling techniques. In phase 1, rates of self-bi

Effects of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior.

Zoological institutions develop human-animal interaction opportunities for visitors to advance missions of conservation, education, and recreation; however, the animal welfare implications largely have yet to be evaluated. This behavioral study was the first to quantify impacts of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior and welfare, by documenting giraffe time budgets that included both normal and stereotypic behaviors. Thirty giraffes from nine zoos (six zoos with varying guest feeding programs and three without) were observed using both instantaneous scan sampling and continuous b

Rub-thin-fracture-extract: first records of hermit crab predation and non-tool shell processing by coastal long-tailed Macaques at Wat Takiap, Thailand.

Coastal populations of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) display remarkable behavioral flexibility in exploiting intertidal food resources. Tool-using groups in Thailand are known to crack marine shellfish with stones, yet the behavioral repertoire of non-tool-using populations remains poorly documented. Here, we present the first report of long-tailed macaques preying on aquatic hermit crabs without using tools, based on observations at Wat Takiap, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Thailand. During low tide, macaques were observed employing a sequence of substrate-assis

Applying the behavior change wheel to ulcerative colitis self-management: a conceptual closed-loop behavioral support framework.

INTRODUCTION: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by recurrent relapse and remission, requiring effective patient-led self-management. However, current self-management interventions often lack a systematic behavioral framework to support long-term behavior change. METHODS: This perspective article proposes a behaviorally informed self-management framework for UC based on the Behavior Change Wheel (BCW). The framework was developed by integrating clinical guidelines, published literature, behavioral theory, and clinical observations. The Capability, Op

Investigating Effects of Interactive Virtual Reality Games and Gender on Immersion, Empathy and Behavior Into Environmental Education.

Environmental concerns are obstacles that all humans should confront. Accordingly, Taiwan has incorporated environmental education into its curriculum guidelines; however, difficulties have been encountered in its implementation because Taiwanese society clings to the concept of credentialism, students cannot focus in class, and course content is too abstract. Virtual reality (VR) techniques have been incorporated into the field of education for years; because they can increase the interestingness of learning and also concretely present matters through gamification, the present study applied V

A comparison of the immune parameters of dogs infected with visceral leishmaniasis using Western blot and neutralization techniques.

The Western blot technique was used to demonstrate the presence of antibodies in the blood of dogs that presented canine visceral leishmaniasis. This technique was used against some specific molecules present in the lysate of the promastigote form of Leshmania chagasi. Through the association of the results of the Western blot technique with the morphological alterations seen as a result of the serum neutralization technique performed in McCoy cells (which mimetizes the macrophage) it was possible to observe the role of some molecules of great relevance in determining the disease in symptomati

The central role of habit in fluid management: a longitudinal study in patients on maintenance hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Effective fluid management is essential for patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis; however, an "intention-behavior gap" is frequently observed in clinical practice. Temporal self-regulation theory provides an integrated framework for explaining this multifaceted behavior, yet its practical relevance and operative mechanisms in hemodialysis-related fluid management remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: A longitudinal design was employed with 184 patients receiving hemodialysis recruited through convenience sampling from two tertiary hospitals during November-December 202

Action observation as a treatment option for fear avoidance behavior in chronic spinal pain.

Psychological factors play an essential role in the maintenance of various chronic pain states, with fear avoidance beliefs contributing to significant functional limitation and disability in chronic spinal pain. Fear avoidance behaviors are typically managed with cognitive-behavioral interventions such as graded exposure to feared movements and graded activity programs. However, attempts to make patients with high pain-related fear perform painful actions using graded exposure therapy can be very challenging. These fear avoidance beliefs in individuals with pain are usually acquired through p

Effects of a new functional-sexological treatment for premature ejaculation.

Premature ejaculation is the most-prevalent sexual problem in men. Various treatments have been developed to increase control over the moment of ejaculation, with two of the most frequent techniques used in behavior therapy being the squeeze method developed by Masters and Johnson (1970) and the "stop-and-start" technique described by Semans (1956). These treatments are effective and improve matters in most cases. However, couples can be averse to using them, with some women reluctant to squeeze their partner's penis and some couples unwilling to interrupt sexual interaction once initiated. Un

The electronic structure of CdSe/CdS core/shell seeded nanorods: type-I or quasi-type-II?

The electronic structure of CdSe/CdS core/shell seeded nanorods of experimentally relevant size is studied using a combination of molecular dynamics and semiempirical pseudopotential techniques with the aim to address the transition from type-I to a quasi-type-II band alignment. The hole is found to be localized in the core region regardless of its size. The overlap of the electron density with the core region depends markedly on the size of the CdSe core. For small cores, we observe little overlap, consistent with type-II behavior. For large cores, significant core-overlap of a number of exci

Neuropsychiatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Is Dependent on Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Signaling.

About 40% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus experience diffuse neuropsychiatric manifestations, including impaired cognition and depression. Although the pathogenesis of diffuse neuropsychiatric SLE (NPSLE) is not fully understood, loss of brain barrier integrity, autoreactive antibodies, and pro-inflammatory cytokines are major contributors to disease development. Fingolimod, a sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator, prevents lymphocyte egress from lymphoid organs through functional antagonism of S1P receptors. In addition to reducing the circulation of autoreactive lymp

Different effects of prenatal MAM vs. perinatal THC exposure on regional cerebral blood perfusion detected by Arterial Spin Labelling MRI in rats.

Clinical studies consistently report structural impairments (i.e.: ventricular enlargement, decreased volume of anterior cingulate cortex or hippocampus) and functional abnormalities including changes in regional cerebral blood flow in individuals suffering from schizophrenia, which can be evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. The aim of this study was to assess cerebral blood perfusion in several schizophrenia-related brain regions using Arterial Spin Labelling MRI (ASL MRI, 9.4 T Bruker BioSpec 94/30USR scanner) in rats. In this study, prenatal exposure to methylazoxymeth

Salvianolic Acid B improves cognitive impairment by inhibiting neuroinflammation and decreasing Aβ level in Porphyromonas gingivalis-infected mice.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation is one of the main pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), the pathogen of chronic periodontitis, could cause Aβ accumulation and was identified in the brain of AD patients. Salvianolic Acid B (SalB) has been proven to have the neuroprotective effect. Whether SalB could protect against P. gingivalis-induced cognitive impairment is still unknown. In this study, a P. gingivalis-infected mouse model was employed to study the neuroprotective role of SalB. The results showed that SalB (20 and 40 mg/kg) treatment for 4
