Diagnostic conundrum of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder.

Evidence for a diagnostic distinction of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) is reviewed, and alternative conceptualizations and definitions for the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders are considered. Studies suggest that CD and ODD are strongly and developmentally related but clearly different. Factor analyses indicate that distinct covarying groups of ODD and CD symptoms can be identified, but certain symptoms relate to both (particularly mild aggression and lying). Age of onset for ODD is earlier than for most CD symptoms. Nearl

Serum cholesterol concentrations in suicidal and non-suicidal male patients suffering from persistent delusional disorder.

Suicidal behavior is a major health risk in psychiatric disorders, especially in affective and psychotic disorders. The neurobiology of suicidal behavior is still unclear. Suicidality has been related to a reduced cholesterol levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum cholesterol concentrations in suicidal and non-suicidal men suffering from persistent delusional disorder and in healthy volunteers. Results showed that serum cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower in suicidal than in non-suicidal patients and healthy controls. Also, level of psychopathology (measured by Bri

Component analysis of the Structured Interview for assessment of Type A behavior in employed women.

Components of the Structured Interview in employed women and the overlap between these components and those identified by self-report measures of Type A behavior were investigated. The sample consisted of 177 employed, white females 26 to 52 years old; 48% were classified as Type A. Principal components factor analysis yielded five factors: Clinical Rating, Hurried-Drive, Impatience, Pressured-Competitiveness, and Expression of Anger. Some differences in the factor structure were noted for this sample of employed women, compared with previous studies of employed men, particularly with respect

Assessing the factorial invariance of Harter's self-concept measures: comparing preadolescents with and without spina bifida using child, parent, and teacher report.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the structure of children's self-concept, as rated by children themselves on the Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC; Harter, 1985), and the structure of children's competence, as rated by their parents on the Rating Scale of Child's Actual Behavior (PRS) and teachers on the Rating Scale of Child's Actual Behavior (TRS; Harter, 1985), are similar across samples of children with and without spina bifida (children were 8 and 9 years of age; n = 68 in each sample). Using confirmatory factor analyses, results revealed that a multidimensiona

Comparison of serum thrombospondin-1 and thrombospondin-2 levels among children with autism spectrum disorder and healthy controls.

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, the etiology of which has not been clearly determined yet. There is increasing evidence that synaptic and dendritic changes are involved in the etiology of ASD. The aim of this study is to determine whether serum Thrombospondin-1 and Thrombospondin-2 differ between ASD patients and healthy controls. This study also investigates possible correlations between clinical symptomatology of ASD and serum Thrombospondin-1 and Thrombospondin-2 levels. Method: A total of 44 children with ASD and 21 healthy controls under 6 year

Lipodystrophy severity does not contribute to HAART nonadherence.

Lipodystrophy severity among 77 people living with HIV/AIDS (PHA) with body fat redistribution was not related to antiretroviral adherence including doses missed during the previous month, categorical rating of maximal adherence, and the PMAQ7 adherence behavior scale. Two thirds of the sample reported submaximal adherence, 19% missing more than two doses, but adherence behavior ratings reflected good overall adherence. Overall symptom burden, convenience of regimen schedule and remembering to organize and take antiretroviral doses, but not regimen adaptation or treatment support, were associa

Confirmatory factor analysis of the behavior rating inventory of executive function in a neuro-pediatric sample and its application to mental disorders.

The construct validity of the 9-scale version of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) parent form was examined in a clinical sample of children and adolescents with neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders (N = 281). Confirmatory factor analysis supported a three-factor model separating the inhibitory behavioral control dimension from the emotional control and metacognitive problem-solving dimensions. The Metacognitive factor was also related to a diagnosis of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) after controlling for age, gender, IQ, adaptive functioning

An examination of the phenomenology and the reliability of ratings of compulsive behavior in autism.

To clarify the nature of compulsive behavior in autism, staff reports of behavioral patterns of 17 young autistic adults living in a farmstead residential facility were analyzed. Three staff members, who had worked most closely with each resident for at least 3 months completed three questionnaires, including Quantitative and Qualitative compulsive behavior scales, and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). The questionnaires were completed on two occasions with a 2-week interval between administrations. Test-retest and interrater consistencies were examined for each of the scales. Both the

The Impact of Anosognosia on Clinical and Patient-Reported Assessments of Psychiatric Symptoms in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric symptoms are widely prevalent in Huntington's disease (HD) and exert greater impact on quality of life than motor manifestations. Despite this, psychiatric symptoms are frequently underrecognized and undertreated. Lack of awareness, or anosognosia, has been observed at all stages of HD and may contribute to diminished patient self-reporting of psychiatric symptoms. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the impact of anosognosia on performance of commonly used clinical rating scales for psychiatric manifestations of HD. METHODS: We recruited 50 HD patients to undergo a form

Protocol for the efficacy and safety of fecal microbiota transplantation in children with autism spectrum disorder: a prospective single-center, single-arm interventional study.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting 0.7% of children globally, with 90% experiencing comorbid gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) may modulate ASD symptoms via the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA). METHODS: This open-label single-arm trial enrolls 30 children (2-12 years) with moderate-to-severe ASD, defined as a Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) score of ≥36. Participants receive 3 nasojejunal FMTs (5 mL/kg) over 5 days. The primary outcomes are GI symptom improvement, assessed using the Gastrointestinal
