OBJECTIVE: Informal carers of people living with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) face significant challenges in managing complex behavioral symptoms, yet disease specific support remains limited. This scoping review explored non-pharmacological interventions developed to support this carer population.
METHODS: Database searches were conducted across Medline, APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, ERIC, E-Journals, and Scopus from January 2011 to November 2025, supplemented by hand searching, identifying nine included studies.
RESULTS: Interventions broadly comprised occupational therapy-based activi

BACKGROUND: A higher prevalence of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia is associated with a greater caregiver burden and increased mortality in people with dementia. Considering the possibility of a reciprocal relationship between sleep disturbances and these symptoms, time series analyses are necessary to explore the associated temporal dynamics.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine dynamic interdependencies between sleep disturbances and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in older adults.
METHODS: Daily interactions between sleep patterns and behavioral and p

Background/Objectives: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), including obstructive sleep apnea, is common in children and is associated with mouth breathing, snoring, and neurobehavioral disturbances. In pediatric orthodontic patients, oral habits and craniofacial imbalances may contribute to airway dysfunction, making orthodontic evaluation a potential setting for early identification of SDB. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of SDB and to evaluate its associations with parent-reported behavioral symptom profiles in a cohort of pediatric orthodontic patients. Methods: A multicenter cros

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and primary progressive aphasia (PPA). However, little is known about their patterns, time course, and association with brain atrophy. We, therefore, aimed to describe behavioral and neuropsychiatric phenotypes in patients with FTD and PPA, leveraging a hypothesis-free/data-driven approach.
METHODS: We included participants diagnosed with behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD) or PPA according to Rascovsky and Gorno-Tempini criteria from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases Clin

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dementia often accompanies behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), including agitation, aggression, depression, and psychosis, which impact patients' quality of life and caregiver burden. Effective management of BPSD is essential to support patient and caregiver well-being. This study presents evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for pharmacological treatments of BPSD in dementia, focusing on antipsychotics, antidepressants, cognitive enhancers, and other medications.
METHODS: This guideline was developed by the Korean Dementia Association's Qu

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms are frequent in patients with genetic frontotemporal dementia (FTD). We aimed to describe behavioral and neuropsychiatric phenotypes in genetic FTD, quantify their temporal association, and investigate their regional association with brain atrophy.
METHODS: We analyzed data of pathogenic variant carriers in the chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (c9orf72), progranulin (GRN), or microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) gene from the Genetic Frontotemporal dementia Initiative cohort study that enrolls both symptomatic pathogen

Understanding the individual differences that can buffer the impact of combat and other adverse exposures on deleterious behavioral health outcomes could lead to more targeted prevention and intervention efforts. Cognitive reappraisal, an antecedent-focused emotion regulation strategy, is linked to positive health outcomes such as lower levels of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. This study examined the moderating effect of individual differences in cognitive reappraisal use on the association between combat exposure and behavioral health outcomes in active-duty U.S. Sol

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has rapidly increased in the past decades, and several studies report about the escalating use of antibiotics and the consequent disruption of the gastrointestinal microbiome leading to the development of neurobehavioral symptoms resembling to those of ASD. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate whether depletion of the gastrointestinal microbiome via antibiotics treatment could induce ASD-like behavioral symptoms in adulthood. To reliably evaluate that, validated valproic acid (VPA) ASD animal model was introduced. At last, we int

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSDs) are major contributing factors to disease burden in dementia patients. Complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) has received attention in the management of dementia in patients with BPSDs. This overview aimed to comprehensively and critically review previous systematic reviews (SRs) of CIM modalities for BPSD management.
METHODS: Thirteen databases were searched in November 2021 to identify SRs on CIM for BPSDs. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic

Antipsychotic drugs are often used for the treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), especially psychosis and behavioral disturbances (e.g., aggression and agitation). They are prescribed alone or in conjunction with anti-dementia (e.g., anti-Alzheimer's disease drugs) and other psychotropic drugs (e.g., antidepressants). However, antipsychotic drugs frequently produce serious extrapyramidal side effects (EPS) including Parkinsonian symptoms (e.g., bradykinesia, akinesia, tremor, and muscle rigidity). Therefore, appropriate drug choice and combination strategy are

BACKGROUND: Currently, 5 million seniors who reside in the community or assisted living or nursing facilities are affected by Alzheimer's disease and other neurocognitive disorders. They experience various psychiatric symptoms. Also, their family members are stressed from caregiving, and may feel guilty for not doing more.
METHODS: We created an innovative nonpharmacological intervention, AlzhaTV, to decrease behavioral and psychological symptoms associated with neurocognitive disorders. We offered AlzhaTV to 9 nursing home patients.
RESULTS: In our retrospective examination of this case ser

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is one of the most common microdeletion syndromes, with a widely underestimated prevalence between 1 per 2000 and 1 per 6000. Since childhood, patients with 22q11.2DS are described as having difficulties to initiate and maintain peer relationships. This lack of social skills has been linked to attention deficits/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety and depression. A high incidence of psychosis and positive symptoms is observed in patients with 22q11.2DS and remains correlated with poor social functioning, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Because 22q11.2DS a

Insecure attachment and behavioral inhibition (BI) increase risk for internalizing problems, but few longitudinal studies have examined their interaction in predicting adolescent anxiety. This study included 165 adolescents (ages 14-17 years) selected based on their reactivity to novelty at 4 months. Infant attachment was assessed with the Strange Situation. Multimethod BI assessments were conducted across childhood. Adolescents and their parents independently reported on anxiety. The interaction of attachment and BI significantly predicted adolescent anxiety symptoms, such that BI and anxiety

Atypical antipsychotics seem to be preferable than conventional agents in treating psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), because they have substantially lower risks of extrapyramidal neurological effects with lower reported rates of parkinsonism and tardive dyskinesia. However, in the course of time, with the increase in their use, more and more side effects have been reported. The benefits and risks of antipsychotic treatment should be carefully evaluated according to the co-morbidity and the severity of the psychological and behavioral symptoms and their impact on the individual elderly

β-Carbolines (BCs) are considered to be endogenous toxins and have been proposed as possible causative candidates inducing Parkinson's disease (PD). However, there is controversy about the effect and also effective dose of these compounds in the etiology of PD. This study was designed to further examine the effect of norharman (NH), a BC which in mammalian brain occurs at high levels in the substantia nigra, on the development of Parkinsonism-like behaviors in rats. A small amount (4μl) of NH solution at 2 or 200ng/ml was unilaterally injected into either striatum or substantia nigra (SN) by s

Women respond differentially to the stress-associated with breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, with some women experiencing more intense and/or sustained behavioral symptoms and immune dysregulation than others. Childhood adversity has been identified to produce long-term dysregulation of stress response systems, increasing reactivity to stressors encountered during adulthood. This study determined whether childhood adversity increased vulnerability for more intense and sustained behavioral symptoms (fatigue, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms), poorer quality of life, and greater im

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common and debilitating problems, but current treatments are limited. Antipsychotic agents show some efficacy on BPSD, but their use is limited by the associated risk of cerebrovascular events and mortality. Reports have shown the efficacy of mood stabilizers on BPSD, but systemic reviews on this issue are scant. This article aims to review studies of the efficacy of mood stabilizers on BPSD, and the quality of the available evidence. We searched for articles published in English during the period 1990 to 2010 and included in the Pub
