Sodium caprate augments the hypoglycemic effect of berberine via AMPK in inhibiting hepatic gluconeogenesis.

Berberine (BER), a natural product and active ingredient of genera Berberis and Coptis, has been demonstrated to possess anti-diabetic activities. However, the poor bioavailability of this agent greatly limits its clinical application. In our previous study, we demonstrated that co-administration of sodium caprate, an absorption enhancer, with BER could significantly increase the bioavailability of BER without any serious mucosal damage. Here, we investigated the effects of BER on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/gluconeogenesis pathway and the effects of sodium caprate on hypoglycemic acti

Polyphenols-rich Indian barberry berries extract alleviates inorganic arsenic exposure-induced cognitive impairments and associated gut microflora alterations.

Arsenic, a globally prevalent environmental toxin that can lead to neuro-behavioural changes. Oxidative stress and activation of inflammatory cascades are prominent mechanisms underlying these effects. The present study investigated the effects of polyphenol-rich extracts from Berberis aristata (Indian barberry) against inorganic arsenic-induced cognitive impairments in a murine model and presented mechanistic insights into its functional food properties. Response Surface Methodology (RSM)-guided hydro-alcoholic extracts were prepared and chemically characterized for their antioxidant activity

Mitochondrial Resilience in Glaucoma: Targeting NAD+ Metabolism and Oxidative Stress in Retinal Ganglion Cell Degeneration with Nicotinamide Riboside and Berberine: Preliminary Clinical Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the selective vulnerability of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), in which mitochondrial dysfunction, redox imbalance, and impaired bioenergetic signaling play central pathogenetic roles. Mitochondrial homeostasis in RGCs critically depends on maintaining intracellular NAD+ pools, which support oxidative phosphorylation, sirtuin-mediated deacetylation, and antioxidant gene expression. Nicotinamide riboside (NR), a potent NAD+ precursor, and berberine (BBR), an AMPK activator derived from Berberis aristata, have recently

A rapid method for simultaneous quantification of berberine, berbamine, magnoflorine and berberrubine in mouse serum using UPLC-MS/MS.

Berberidis cortex, the dry bark of Berberis L., is used to treat diabetes and contains at least three bioactive components: berberine (BBR), berbamine (BBM) and magnoflorine (MGF). BBR in turn is metabolized into berberrubine (BRB). Although it is possible to quantify each of these components individually in serum, there are currently no methods for simultaneously quantifying all four. Here, we developed a specific and rapid method for simultaneously quantifying BBR, BBM, MGF and BRB in mouse serum using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Sample

Berberine enhances survival and axonal regeneration of motoneurons following spinal root avulsion and re-implantation in rats.

Brachial plexus avulsion (BPA) occurs when the spinal nerve roots are pulled away from the surface of the spinal cord and disconnects neuronal cell body from its distal downstream axon, which induces massive motoneuron death, motor axon degeneration and de-innervation of targeted muscles, thereby resulting in permanent paralysis of motor functions in the upper limb. Avulsion injury triggers oxidative stress and intense local neuroinflammation at the lesioned site, leading to the death of most motoneurons. Berberine (BBR), a natural isoquinoline alkaloid derived from medicinal herbs of Berberis
