We studied the frequency of contact dermatitis to corticosteroids in consecutive eczema patients and the relevance of positive patch test reactions. It is well known that applications of a single dose of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) to mouse ears induces an acute inflammatory reaction consisting of erythema, edema and polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) infiltration. INTRODUCTION: Clinical studies indicate that contact allergy to glucocorticosteroids (GCS) is not rare and has been increasingly reported over the past decade. Subacute toxicity of hydrocortisone 17-butyrate 21-propionate (HBP), a new synthetic corticosteroid, was studied in rats, using betamethasone 17-valerate (BV) and hydrocortisone 17-butyrate (HB) as the reference drugs. Rhus dermatitis, experimentally induced in humans, was used as a model for determining the efficacy of various proprietary topical steroids. One-centimeter squares of vesicular dermatitis were induced by patch application of Rhus oleoresin. Fourteen cases are described in which the local application of corticosteroid preparations to ringworm infections of the skin have resulted in unusual clinical pictures. A kerion-like lesion due to Trichophyton rubrum, intertriginous infections simulating candidiasis and due to Epidermophyton floccosum, and pictures resembling poikiloderma, papular rosacea, and indeterminate leprosy are among the changes that were seen in these patients.

The binding of 3H-triamcinolone acetonide to soluble macromolecules of cultured human skin fibroblasts was studied in an attempt to explain the mechanism underlying the inhibitory effects of glucocorticoids on cell growth.
