INTRODUCTION: The cardiovascular effects of acute alcohol exposure remain incompletely understood, despite its reported association with arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation (AF). The Munich-BREW II study supported a link between excessive alcohol consumption, elevated heart rate, impaired heart rate variability (HRV), and increased arrhythmia incidence. Here, we present sub-analyses exploring how the amount of congested alcohol during binge drinking and the maximum breath alcohol concentration (BAC) influence these findings.
METHODS: The Munich-BREW II study is a prospective, single-center c

PURPOSE: Mental health and substance use social workers must be prepared to work with people with disabilities, as this population has higher rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and ACEs can lead to mental health and substance use problems. The study's purpose is to assess the moderating effect of disability on the interrelationships among ACEs, mental health, and binge drinking.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using data from the 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey, we first used multigroup confirmatory factor analysis to establish the underlying factor structure

BACKGROUND: Since the origin of the C57BL/6 (B6) mouse strain, several phenotypically and genetically distinct B6 substrains have emerged. For example, C57BL/6J mice (B6J) display greater voluntary ethanol consumption and locomotor response to psychostimulants and differences in nucleus accumbens synaptic physiology relative to C57BL/6N (B6N) mice. A non-synonymous serine to phenylalanine point mutation (S968F) in the cytoplasmic FMR1-interacting protein 2 (Cyfip2) gene underlies both the differential locomotor response to cocaine and the accumbal physiology exhibited by these substrains. BACKGROUND: Binge drinking during the transition from adolescence to emerging adulthood remains a significant public health concern. Mental health symptoms may be associated with increased risk for binge drinking, and the strength of this association might vary across subgroups. This study examines whether adolescent anxiety and depression predict young adult binge drinking and whether these associations vary by race/ethnicity, sexuality, and socioeconomic status (SES).
METHODS: Using data from the Happiness & Health Study (N = 2,006), negative binomial models examined whether adolescent anxi

Although studies have investigated the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on binge drinking, few studies have investigated the moderating effects of race/ethnicity on the association between ACEs and binge drinking among adults. The objectives of this study were to examine the association between ACEs and binge drinking, and whether this association is dependent on race/ethnicity. Data for this study were obtained from the 2019-2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. An analytic sample of 204,858 adults aged 18-69 (50.9% female) was analyzed using binary logistic r

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is a leading modifiable risk factor for a range of diseases and social harms globally. Older adults are vulnerable to alcohol-related harms due to physiological changes, multimorbidity, and medication use; however, many older adults continue to drink at high-risk levels. This study examined the prevalence and gender-specific correlates of hazardous and heavy episodic drinking (HED) among Swedish and Finnish community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the 2021/2022 Gerontological Regional Database (GERDA) survey included 11,747 participan

Adolescence through young adulthood is a sensitive neurodevelopmental window characterized by ongoing maturation of gray and white matter and heightened vulnerability to alcohol's neurotoxic effects. Although prior studies link binge drinking with disrupted brain development, the potential for recovery with reduced alcohol use remains underexplored. Using data from 690 participants (ages 12-29) in the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence to Adulthood (NCANDA-A), we examined the longitudinal impact of binge drinking episodes, and reductions in binge drinking episod

BACKGROUND: Screening for certain types of substance use is common in health care. Screening for social risks-modifiable social conditions affecting health-is less common. Understanding how binge drinking, cannabis use, and tobacco use co-occur with social risks could inform interventions targeting these factors simultaneously.
OBJECTIVE: Examine the relationship between binge drinking, tobacco, and cannabis use and social risks among US health care users.
DESIGN: Retrospective population-based cross-sectional study.
PARTICIPANTS: Adults from 15 US states or territories who participated in

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is increasing among adults in midlife (i.e., ages 35-60), but few studies examine specific alcohol use behaviors in this age group. We examined measures of typical drinks, maximum drinks, binge drinking, and high-intensity drinking by age, sex, and race/ethnicity among midlife adults, as well as the prospective association between age 18 binge drinking and midlife behaviors.
METHODS: Data from 5180 respondents participating in the national Monitoring the Future Panel study who were aged 35-60 in 2022 (followed since they were in 12th grade in 1980-2005) were used to es

Adolescent binge drinking is a social problem with a long-lasting impact on cognitive functions. The cannabinoid type-1 (CB1) receptor of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is involved in brain synaptic plasticity, cognition and behavior via receptor localization at specific subcellular compartments of the cortical, limbic and motor regions. Alcohol (EtOH) intake affects the ECS, CB1 and their functions. Evidence indicates that binge drinking during adolescence impairs memory via the abrogation of CB1-dependent synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. However, the impact of EtOH consumption on gl

Helping the return of people with social disorders, including ethanol consumption, are important research topics in the field of biological sciences, and there are many uncertainties about the efficacy of drug interventions and exercise training. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects short-term combination of curcumin and swimming on the improvement of spatial memory. Male Wistar rats (200-250 g) were randomly assigned into ethanol or dextrose groups. After 4 days of gavage, and withdrawn of consumption, they were affected by swimming intervention or curcumin supplementation wit

Patterns and features of substance use and abuse vary across the menstrual cycle in humans. Yet, little work has systematically examined the within-person relationships between ovarian hormone changes and alcohol use across the menstrual cycle. Our study was the first to examine the roles of within-person levels of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) in relation to daily alcohol use and binge drinking in young women. Participants were 22 naturally cycling women, ages 18-22, recruited through a university subject pool who reported any alcohol use and who completed a screening visit assessing s

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent binge drinking (BD) is a major public health concern, yet little is known about the neural markers that precede alcohol initiation. This longitudinal study examined whether magnetoencephalography (MEG) event-related fields (ERFs) recorded during inhibitory control predict later BD.
METHODS: Eighty-one alcoholnaïve adolescents initially completed a Go/No-Go task during MEG acquisition, alongside self-report measures of impulsivity, sensation seeking, and executive functioning. After two years, 44 participants remained eligible and were classified as controls (CN, n = 2

Alcoholic liver injury (ALI) is a prevalent and severe form of liver disease that lacks specific therapies, relying instead on supportive care. In ALI, gut epithelial tight junction proteins are compromised, leading to increased intestinal permeability and the translocation of endotoxins, such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), into the bloodstream, thereby aggravating liver injury. The plant Sicyos angulatus (SA), part of the Cucurbitaceae family, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects but has not yet been studied for potential efficacy in mitigating ALI. In this study, we

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking (BD) involves consuming large amounts of alcohol within a short timeframe, leading to a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08g/dL or above. This pattern of alcohol consumption is prevalent among young adults and has significant implications for brain structure and subsequent drinking behaviors.
METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study, we employed zero-inflated negative binomial regression models to examine whether various neurostructural features (i.e., volume, surface area, cortical thickness) of brain regions involved in executive and emotional/motivational

The neuropeptide cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) has been implicated in alcohol consumption and reward behaviours, yet mechanisms mediating these effects have yet to be identified. Using a transgenic CART knockout (KO) mouse line we uncovered a sexually dimorphic effect of CART in binge drinking, with male CART KO mice increasing intake, whilst female CART KO mice decreased their alcohol intake compared to controls. Female CART KO mice show greater sensitivity to bitter solutions that can be overshadowed through addition of a sweetener, implicating taste as a factor. Furth

OBJECTIVES: Young adults have been overly affected by the containment measures against COVID-19 and, consequently, worsening in mental health and change in health behavior have been reported. Because the life phase of emerging adulthood is crucial for developing health behaviors, this study aims to examine increase in alcohol consumption, single and multiple binge drinking, and associated factors in students during lockdown and post-lockdown periods.
METHODS: A prospective open cohort study design with nine survey time points between April 2020 and June 2021 was conducted. The present study u

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease of tooth supporting tissues caused by oral biofilms, influenced by environmental and genetic factors, among others. Ethanol consumption has been considered a factor that enhances alveolar bone loss, especially in high doses. The present study aims to investigate the changes promoted by ethanol binge drinking per se or associated with ligature-induced periodontal breakdown on alveolar bone loss.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two Wistar rats were randomly allocated into four groups: control (C), ethanol (3g/kg/day; 3 days On-4 d
