Using insertable cardiac monitors to test determinants of heart rate and activity in captive baboons.

BACKGROUND: Insertable cardiac monitors (ICMs) provide fine-grained, continuous data on cardiac activity. These data have great potential to reveal individual physiology, energetics, and stress responses, with implications for animal health, cognition, welfare, and conservation. However, these devices must be tested for safety, accuracy, and biological validity before being deployed in new species. Here we do so for the Reveal LINQ™ ICM (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN USA) over an 8-month period in 10 adult female baboons (Papio anubis and P. cynocephalus) at the Kenya Institute of Primate Researc

Variations in the experiences and expressions of depression among ethnic minorities.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the ethnic differences in the experiences and expressions of depressive symptoms. Also, a discussion is presented regarding the effects that depression has on the individual and consequently the adverse impact it will have on society. Because the expressions of depression are so varied, appropriate measures are required to account for the differences of these expressions in individuals in order to facilitate appropriate diagnosing Both in the United States and throughout the world, depression accounts for a significant proportion of psychiatric disorders

Multi-level comparisons of cloacal, skin, feather and nest-associated microbiota suggest considerable influence of horizontal acquisition on the microbiota assembly of sympatric woodlarks and skylarks.

BACKGROUND: Working toward a general framework to understand the role of microbiota in animal biology requires the characterisation of animal-associated microbial communities and identification of the evolutionary and ecological factors shaping their variation. In this study, we described the microbiota in the cloaca, brood patch skin and feathers of two species of birds and the microbial communities in their nest environment. We compared patterns of resemblance between these microbial communities at different levels of biological organisation (species, individual, body part) and investigated

Factors modulating the incubation of drug and non-drug craving and their clinical implications.

It was suggested in 1986 that cue-induced cocaine craving increases progressively during early abstinence and remains high during extended periods of time. Clinical evidence now supports this hypothesis and that this increase is not specific to cocaine but rather generalize across several drugs of abuse. Investigators have identified an analogous incubation phenomenon in rodents, in which time-dependent increases in cue-induced drug seeking are observed after abstinence from intravenous drug or palatable food self-administration. Incubation of craving is susceptible to variation in magnitude a

Genome-Wide Association Study of Clinical Outcome After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Haemorrhage: Protocol.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) results in persistent clinical deficits which prevent survivors from returning to normal daily functioning. Only a small fraction of the variation in clinical outcome following aSAH is explained by known clinical, demographic and imaging variables; meaning additional unknown factors must play a key role in clinical outcome. There is a growing body of evidence that genetic variation is important in determining outcome following aSAH. Understanding genetic determinants of outcome will help to improve prognostic modelling, stratify patients in clinical t

Intraindividual variation in the basal metabolic rate of women: Effect of the menstrual cycle.

The validity of using the basal metabolic rate (BMR) to calculate an individual's energy requirements is based upon the assumption that the intraindividual variation in BMR is small. Early studies (pre-1940) on BMR in women had shown that the menstrual cycle may have a profound effect, contributing to high levels of intraindividual variation. To investigate this issue further, and to explore whether BMR is indeed a biological constant in women, sequential measurements of BMR were made in women over one menstrual cycle. Two independent studies were undertaken in which the BMR of 12 weight-stabl

The value of the thromboelastogram as means of monitoring the sub-cutaneous preventive action of calcium heparinate.

The index of the thrombodynamic potential (I.T.P.) as one of the biological means of controlling the prophylactic effect of sub-cutaneous injections of Calcium Heparinate has been studied in 34 spinal cord injuries during the acute phase. Individual tolerance variations, some of them important, have been noted as well as the necessity of adjusting the doses, according to the time after injury. A biological hypercoagulability has been noted within the first and third month after injury. The interest and the cost of such a method are discussed and further comparative biological investigations, u

Functional impact of genetic background on variable expressivity in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Disease-associated variants can lead to variable phenotypic outcomes in neurodevelopmental disorders, but the biological mechanisms underlying this variability remain poorly understood. Here, we develop a framework to investigate this phenomenon using the 16p12.1 deletion as a paradigm of variable expressivity. Using induced pluripotent stem cell models from affected families and CRISPR-edited lines with the 16p12.1 deletion, we find that the deletion and rare variants in the genetic background jointly influence chromatin accessibility and expression of neurodevelopmental genes. Association Between Intraindividual Variability in Cognitive Performance and White Matter Organisation in Chronic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can result in persistent cognitive deficits (particularly in attention, processing speed, and working memory), even years after the injury. The majority of behavioural studies have focussed on averaged cognitive performance scores, such as average reaction time or accuracy scores after mTBI. However, less is understood about how mTBI affects intraindividual variability (IIV) in cognitive performance across repeated sessions or measurement occasions over time. In this study, we investigate IIV in cognitive performance in chronic mTBI patients (n = 11) relative

Nucleus Accumbens Stimulation Modulates Inhibitory Control by Right Prefrontal Cortex Activation in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Inhibitory control is considered a compromised cognitive function in obsessive-compulsive (OCD) patients and likely linked to corticostriatal circuitry disturbances. Here, 9 refractory OCD patients treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) were evaluated to address the dynamic modulations of large-scale cortical network activity involved in inhibitory control after nucleus accumbens (NAc) stimulation and their relationship with cortical thickness. A comparison of DBS "On/Off" states showed that patients committed fewer errors and exhibited increased intraindividual reaction time variability, r

Polymorphisms in the Wilms Tumor Gene Are Associated With Interindividual Variations in Rubella Virus-Specific Cellular Immunity After Measles-Mumps-Rubella II Vaccination.

Rubella vaccination induces widely variable immune responses in vaccine recipients. While rubella vaccination is effective at inducing immunity to rubella infection in most subjects, up to 5% of individuals do not achieve or maintain long-term protective immunity. To expand upon our previous work identifying genetic polymorphisms that are associated with these interindividual differences in humoral immunity to rubella virus, we performed a genome-wide association study in a large cohort of 1843 subjects to discover single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with rubella virus-specific c

Human epididymis protein 4: factors of variation.

BACKGROUND: Amongst the newly proposed biomarkers for ovarian cancer, serum human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) shows the greatest potential for clinical use. However, systematic appraisals of its biological characteristics are not available. This study sought to critically revise the available literature on biological and lifestyle factors affecting HE4 concentrations in serum to understand their possible influence on the marker interpretation. METHODS: A literature search was undertaken on electronic databases and references from retrieved articles. Article results were analyzed by evaluating

Pathogen variation and urea influence selection and success of Streptomyces mixtures in biological control.

Success in biological control of plant diseases remains inconsistent in the field. A collection of well-characterized Streptomyces antagonists (n = 19 isolates) was tested for their capacities to inhibit pathogenic Streptomyces scabies (n = 15 isolates). There was significant variation among antagonists in ability to inhibit pathogen isolates and among pathogens in their susceptibility to inhibition. Only one antagonist could inhibit all pathogens, and antagonist-pathogen interactions were highly specific, highlighting the limitations of single-strain inoculum in biological control. However, t

Individual differences in biological stress responses moderate the contribution of early peer victimization to subsequent depressive symptoms.

RATIONALE: Some children who are exposed to early peer victimization become depressed, whereas others are resilient. Understanding individual differences in responses to early adversity, such as victimization, is critical for developing both comprehensive theoretical models and effective interventions. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether individual differences in biological stress responses (i.e., activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and autonomic nervous system) moderated the contribution of peer victimization to depressive symptoms across a 1-year period. METHODS: Chil

Serum free light chains among twin siblings: is the kappa/lambda ratio genetically determined?

BACKGROUND: Serum kappa, lambda, the K/λ light chain concentrations are used for screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of patients with multiple myeloma and other plasma cell disorders. Biological variation studies conducted on healthy subjects showed that free light chains have a low within and high between-individual variation. We determined if this variation were genetically linked. METHODS: We obtained a single serum sample from 16 pairs of identical twins, 8 neonate twins, and 19 presumed directly-related siblings children, measured Κ and λ light chains and computed the Κ/λ ratio. Thrombin generation and coagulation factor activities: evaluation and comparison with the international normalized ratio.

Oral anticoagulation therapy is monitored effectively by the international normalized ratio (INR). However, INR is perhaps not optimal in predicting risk of complications. Other more sensitive methods have been suggested. The aims of this study were to estimate the variability and association of calibrated automated thrombin generation (CAT) and clotting activity of coagulation factors II, VII, IX and X and to compare these parameters with the INR measured in a central laboratory as well as using portable coagulometers. Twenty-four patients on stable oral anticoagulation therapy with coumarins

Conformational variations of the medial epicondyle of the humerus: A case study of fusion anomaly on dry bones.

The estimation of a biological profile in biological anthropology is a central point in the study of human remains. To specify this profile, the observation of variations, and pathologies on the skeleton is a tool that makes an individual unique. In this research, the focus was on the distal part of the humerus. Through the study of five individuals from an osteo-archaeological collection, conformational anomalies of the medial epicondyle of the humerus were highlighted. The aim is to describe them and to propose an etiology of appearance. For this purpose, observation of the rest of the skele

In situ isolation of mRNA from individual plant cells: creation of cell-specific cDNA libraries.

A method for isolating and cloning mRNA populations from individual cells in living, intact plant tissues is described. The contents of individual cells were aspirated into micropipette tips filled with RNA extraction buffer. The mRNA from these cells was purified by binding to oligo(dT)-linked magnetic beads and amplified on the beads using reverse transcription and PCR. The cell-specific nature of the isolated mRNA was verified by creating cDNA libraries from individual tomato leaf epidermal and guard cell mRNA preparations. In testing the reproducibility of the method, we discovered an inhe

Relating multivariate shapes to genescapes using phenotype-biological process associations for craniofacial shape.

Realistic mappings of genes to morphology are inherently multivariate on both sides of the equation. The importance of coordinated gene effects on morphological phenotypes is clear from the intertwining of gene actions in signaling pathways, gene regulatory networks, and developmental processes underlying the development of shape and size. Yet, current approaches tend to focus on identifying and localizing the effects of individual genes and rarely leverage the information content of high-dimensional phenotypes. Here, we explicitly model the joint effects of biologically coherent collections o
