Adaptive Cycling: Classification, Adaptations, and Biomechanics.

Increased awareness, recognition, and accessibility has led to an increase in the popularity of adaptive cycling. This article aims to provide up-to-date information for clinicians about available adaptations, participation options, and resources. We review the para-cycling classification system and 4 main categories of cycles. There are multiple considerations for fit and customization depending on an individual's disability to improve efficiency and comfort. Virtual platforms that allow riders to train and compete online have grown in popularity among para-cycling communities and offer an al

Wetsuit Use During Open Water Swimming. Does It "Suit" Everybody? A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE: Although wearing a wetsuit while swimming, when permitted, is primarily for safety reasons (ie, to protect against hypothermia), changes in buoyancy, biomechanics, and exercise performance have been reported. This narrative review covers the benefits of different wetsuit models on performance in swimming and triathlon. METHODS: A computer search of online databases was conducted to locate relevant published research until March 2021. After the screening process, 17 studies were selected for analysis. RESULTS: Most of the selected studies involved pool swimmers or triathletes complet

Revising a loosened cancellous screw with a larger screw does not restore original pull-out strength - A biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Cancellous screw fixation is often used in fracture fixation. When this screw is over-tightened, damage to the bone and other non-linear processes such as fracture and construct failure would be involved. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the reduction in pull-out strength when a cancellous screw spins and (2) to determine how much pull-out strength can be restored by revising with a larger diameter screw. METHODS: A biomechanical study using synthetic polyurethane foam (320 kg/m3) was performed to assess (1) the pull-out strength of a 6.5 mm cancellous screw, (2)

A Metric for Identifying Stress Fractures in Runners.

PURPOSE: Stress fractures are common overuse running injuries. Individuals with stress fractures exhibit running biomechanics characterized by elevated impact peak and loading rate. While elevated impact peak and loading rate are associated with stress fractures, there are few established metrics used to identify the presence of stress fractures in individuals. Here this study aims to exploit the linear relationship between the impact peak and loading rate to establish a metric to help identify individuals with stress fractures. We hypothesize that the ratio between the impact peak and loading

Chewing, dental morphology and wear in tapirs (Tapirus spp.) and a comparison of free-ranging and captive specimens.

Feeding practice in herbivorous mammals can impact their dental wear, due to excessive or irregular abrasion. Previous studies indicated that browsing species display more wear when kept in zoos compared to natural habitats. Comparable analyses in tapirs do not exist, as their dental anatomy and chewing kinematics are assumed to prevent the use of macroscopic wear proxies such as mesowear. We aimed at describing tapir chewing, dental anatomy and wear, to develop a system allowing comparison of free-ranging and captive specimens even in the absence of known age. Video analyses suggest that in c

The pelvic girdle pain deadlock: 1. Would 'deconstruction' help?

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) is an important clinical problem that deserves more attention. Several treatment regimens have been presented that appear to be somewhat promising, but it was reported that about 10% of patients still suffer from the problems 11 years after their inception. This situation should be improved. PURPOSE: We present a personalized history, with first the acceptance of the concept of 'PGP', around 2005, and then continued problems in really understanding PGP's nature and causes. We propose to engage in 'deconstruction' of PGP, that is, disentangling the large

Frontal plane dynamics of the centre of mass during quadrupedal locomotion on a split-belt treadmill.

Our previous study of cat locomotion demonstrated that lateral displacements of the centre of mass (COM) were strikingly similar to those of human walking and resembled the behaviour of an inverted pendulum (Park et al. 2019 J. Exp. Biol.222, 14. (doi:10.1242/jeb.198648)). Here, we tested the hypothesis that frontal plane dynamics of quadrupedal locomotion are consistent with an inverted pendulum model. We developed a simple mathematical model of balance control in the frontal plane based on an inverted pendulum and compared model behaviour with that of four cats locomoting on a split-belt tre

Lateral Oscillation and Body Compliance Help Snakes and Snake Robots Stably Traverse Large, Smooth Obstacles.

Snakes can move through almost any terrain. Similarly, snake robots hold the promise as a versatile platform to traverse complex environments such as earthquake rubble. Unlike snake locomotion on flat surfaces which is inherently stable, when snakes traverse complex terrain by deforming their body out of plane, it becomes challenging to maintain stability. Here, we review our recent progress in understanding how snakes and snake robots traverse large, smooth obstacles such as boulders and felled trees that lack "anchor points" for gripping or bracing. First, we discovered that the generalist v

Stepping pattern changes in the caterpillar Manduca sexta: the effects of orientation and substrate.

Most animals can successfully travel across cluttered, uneven environments and cope with enormous changes in surface friction, deformability and stability. However, the mechanisms used to achieve such remarkable adaptability and robustness are not fully understood. Even more limited is the understanding of how soft, deformable animals such as tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta (caterpillars) can control their movements as they navigate surfaces that have varying stiffness and are oriented at different angles. To fill this gap, we analyzed the stepping patterns of caterpillars crawling on two diffe

Experimental Methods to Study Human Postural Control.

Many components of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems act in concert to achieve the stable, upright human posture. Controlled experiments accompanied by appropriate mathematical methods are needed to understand the role of the different sub-systems involved in human postural control. This article describes a protocol for performing perturbed standing experiments, acquiring experimental data, and carrying out the subsequent mathematical analysis, with the aim of understanding the role of musculoskeletal system and central control in human upright posture. The results generated by these met

Hypothesis about an existent biomechanical cause-effect relationship between Schëuermann's kyphosis and scoliosis.

Schëuermanńs kyphosis is usually observed with a mild idiopathic scoliosis, and there is parity between these two diseases. The aim of this work is to establish a hypothesis about the existence of a biomechanical causal relationship between Schëuermann's kyphosis and scoliosis. To achieve this, a literature review was conducted. A simple mechanical model of the passive thoracolumbar subsystem was created to support part of the discussion. This mechanical model describes the passive thoracolumbar subsystem under ideal conditions of equilibrium. After giving consideration to the system under the

The piriformis muscle syndrome: an exploration of anatomical context, pathophysiological hypotheses and diagnostic criteria.

INTRODUCTION: The piriformis muscle syndrome (PMS) has remained an ill-defined entity. It is a form of entrapment neuropathy involving compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle. Bearing this in mind, a medical examination is likely to be suggestive, as a classical range of symptoms corresponds to truncal sciatica with frequently fluctuating pain, initially in the muscles of the buttocks. PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL HYPOTHESES: The piriformis muscle is biarticular, constituting a bridge in front of and below the sacroiliac joint and behind and above the coxo-femoral joint. It is essenti

Usability of normal force distribution measurements to evaluate asymmetrical loading of the back of the horse and different rider positions on a standing horse.

Pressure measurement devices in equine sports have primarily focused on tack (saddle pads and saddle fitting methods). However, saddle pressure devices may also be useful in evaluating the interaction and distribution of normal forces between the horse and rider, including rider position and riding technique. This study examined the validity, reliability, repeatability and possibilities of using a saddle pressure device to evaluate rider position. All measurements were performed using a standing horse. Validity was tested by calculating the correlation coefficient between measured normal force

The anatomy of cavus foot deformity.

The term "cavus foot" is used to describe a spectrum of foot shapes that have in common a high arch. The components of cavus are increased pitch and varus of the hindfoot, plantar flexion of the midfoot, and varus and adduction of the forefoot. The cavus shape is associated with changes in the mechanics of the foot. It is less flexible and balanced than a neutral foot. Although one fifth to one quarter of the population has a cavus foot, there is little anatomic description in the literature. This manuscript describes the anatomy and function of cavus foot.

Histoarchitecture of schistosomal granuloma development and involution: morphogenetic and biomechanical approaches.

The authors present morphogenetic and biomechanical approaches on the concept of the Schistosoma mansoni granulomas, considering them as organoid structures that depend on cellular adhesion and sorting, forming rearrangement into hierarchical concentric layers, creating tension-dependent structures, aiming to acquire round form, since this is the minimal energy form, in which opposing forces pull in equally from all directions and are in balance. From the morphogenetic point of view, the granulomas function as little organs, presenting maturative and involutional stages in their development wi

[Biomechanics of the normal and prosthetic knee].

The knee joint is characterized by particular kinetics due to asymmetry of the femoral condyles and to angulation of the extensor system. During flexion, this results in a rolling/sliding movement in which the upper surface of the tibia recoils under the femoral condyles, combined with an automatic movement of medial rotation from extension towards flexion of the tibia beneath the femur. The articular contact areas are very small, ranging from 10 to 20 cm2 for the femorotibial articulation and barely reaching 4 cm2 for the femoropatellar articulation. These areas are subjected to extremely str

[Functional significance of a floating eye model].

The role of the floating eye model in the organization of situating and producing eye micromovements was studied. There is presented a hydromechanical model of orthophoria of latent and obvious squint. It is shown that the multiformity of obvious squint depends on the variety of combinations of nonuniform forces in the right eye aparting from the left one, which is the result of nonuniform deviations of both eyes from the norm, and heterophoria is the result of combinations of uniform forces aparting and of analogous deviations of both eyes form. It is shown that the concomittant squint is cau

Cross-country skiing injuries and biomechanics.

Cross-country skiing exercises most of the joints, muscles and tendons in the body giving the skier an all around workout. This, in combination with a low incidence of injury, makes cross-country skiing an ideal recreational and competitive sport. The new skating techniques developed during the last decade have resulted in greater velocity. The maximum speed during the diagonal stride technique is 6 m/sec compared to 8 to 9 m/sec when skating and double poling. Top-level skiers today use strong and ultra light skis of fiberglass and graphite. The ski weight is less than 500g. Today's skating t
