Early Sonographic Markers of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Narrative Review of Placental, Fetal and Uterine Artery Findings.

Background/Objectives: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common metabolic complications of pregnancy and is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Current screening strategies are generally performed during the end of the second trimester, limiting opportunities for early intervention. Increasing evidence suggests that placental and fetal ultrasound markers detectable in early pregnancy may reflect the pathophysiological changes preceding the clinical diagnosis of GDM. This narrative review aims to summarize the current evidence regarding first- and second

Axial Length as a Key Risk Factor for Lattice Degeneration: A Large-Sample Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lattice degeneration (LD) is a well-established precursor lesion of retinal detachment, a condition with often poor prognosis that can lead to permanent vision loss. Early identification of LD is clinically significant for risk assessment. This study aimed to investigate the associations between LD and ocular biometric as well as demographic parameters, and to develop a risk assessment framework. The ultimate goal is to identify individuals at genuinely high risk who may benefit from tailored follow-up or treatment. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 1776 subjects from 7634 s

Changes in Ocular Biometry After Pharmacologic Cycloplegia and Mydriasis in Primary Angle Closure Disease.

INTRODUCTION: The mechanism of primary angle closure disease (PACD) has been extensively investigated, while some cases remain unexplained. Hypothesizing that chronic primary ciliary block (CB) may play a role in PACD pathogenesis and the contribution could be revealed by pharmacologic cycloplegia and mydriasis, this study analyzed changes in anterior segment biometric parameters following cycloplegic intervention. METHODS: A total of 170 eyes of 170 Chinese subjects aged between 50 and 80 years were included: 90 in the primary angle closure suspect (PACS) group, 33 in the primary angle closu

The Geshiyaro Project: a study protocol for developing a scalable model of interventions for moving towards the interruption of the transmission of soil-transmitted helminths and schistosome infections in the Wolaita zone of Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: National deworming programmes rely almost exclusively on mass drug administration (MDA) to children to control morbidity caused by these parasitic infections. The provision of other interventions, consisting of preventive chemotherapy at high population level coverage together with water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) and changes in risk behaviour, should enable sustainable control of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) and schistosomiasis and ultimately interrupt transmission. METHODS/DESIGN: Two interventions will be implemented by the project: (i) community-wide biannual albendazo

Relation of Primary Fingerprint Patterns With Gender and Blood Group: A Dermatoglyphic Study From a Tertiary Care Institute in Eastern India.

Background Identification of an individual plays a vital part in any medicolegal investigation. The fingerprint is one of the oldest and most reliable biometric methods and is taken as legitimate proof of identification of an individual. Positive relationships between the fingerprint pattern and blood group and the fingerprint pattern and gender were demonstrated in some of the previous studies but weren't consistent across them. Objectives (a) To study the distribution of fingerprint patterns among the study participants by gender and ABO and Rh blood groups and (b) to find an association bet

The CErebro Placental RAtio as indicator for delivery following perception of reduced fetal movements, protocol for an international cluster randomised clinical trial; the CEPRA study.

BACKGROUND: Routine assessment in (near) term pregnancy is often inaccurate for the identification of fetuses who are mild to moderately compromised due to placental insufficiency and are at risk of adverse outcomes, especially when fetal size is seemingly within normal range for gestational age. Although biometric measurements and cardiotocography are frequently used, it is known that these techniques have low sensitivity and specificity. In clinical practice this diagnostic uncertainty results in considerable 'over treatment' of women with healthy fetuses whilst truly compromised fetuses rem

Ultrasound for diagnosis of birth weight discordance in twin pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to standardize monitoring in obstetric research of twin pregnancies. Identification of birth weight discordance (BWD), defined as a difference in the birth weights of twins, is a well-documented phenomenon in twin pregnancies. Ultrasound for the diagnosis of BWD informs complex decision making including whether to intervene medically (via laser photo coagulation) or deliver the twins to avoid fetal morbidities or even death. The question is, how accurate is this measurement? OBJECTIVES: To determine the diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) of ultrasoun

Improving the accuracy of fetal growth restriction diagnosis by integrating fetal genetic growth potential: a proof of concept study.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a common obstetric complication where a fetus fails to reach its genetically determined growth potential. Current diagnostic methods rely on population-based fetal biometric percentiles, which struggle to distinguish pathological FGR from healthy small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants and may miss cases of growth restriction in fetuses with a high genetic growth potential who fall above conventional SGA thresholds. This study aimed to develop a novel diagnostic framework for FGR by incorporating individualized genetic potential modeling to improve

High-Fidelity Synthesis of Temporomandibular Joint Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Images via Latent Diffusion Models.

Background: The development of robust artificial intelligence (AI) models for diagnosing Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs) is severely constrained by data scarcity and patient privacy regulations. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), the gold standard for assessing osseous changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), inherently contains sensitive biometric facial features, making de-identification difficult without losing critical anatomical information. This study aims to develop and evaluate TMJCTGenerator, a specialized latent diffusion model (LDM) framework designed to synthesize high-f

Gender and age detection assist convolutional neural networks in classification of thorax diseases.

Conventionally, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been used to identify and detect thorax diseases on chest x-ray images. To identify thorax diseases, CNNs typically learn two types of information: disease-specific features and generic anatomical features. CNNs focus on disease-specific features while ignoring the rest of the anatomical features during their operation. There is no evidence that generic anatomical features improve or worsen the performance of convolutional neural networks for thorax disease classification in the current research. As a consequence, the relevance of gener

[Sonographic diagnosis of severe fetal malformations].

The present paper reports on results of ultrasonographic examination in the identification of severe congenital malformations in the period between 1975 and 1982. The incidence of severe congenital malformations in relation to the total number of births during this period was 159 out of 11,372 (1.4%). In 144 cases with severe malformations at least one antenatal ultrasonographic examination had been performed. According to their topographic location, 42% of these were head/neural tube defects, 38% trunk/organ defects, only 2% were severe defects of the extremities and 18% were rare fetal malfo
