STUDY QUESTION: Does the sequence of prior pregnancy events (pregnancy losses, live births, ectopic pregnancies, molar pregnancy and still birth), obstetric complications and maternal age affect chance of live birth in the next pregnancy and are prior events predictive for the outcome?
SUMMARY ANSWER: The sequence of pregnancy outcomes is significantly associated with chance of live birth; however, pregnancy history and age are insufficient to predict the outcome of an individual woman's next pregnancy.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Adverse pregnancy outcomes decrease the chance of live birth in th

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether child maltreatment is associated with attentional problems in adolescence (14 years) and young adulthood (21 years), and whether outcomes depend on the type of maltreatment (sexual vs non-sexual).
METHODS: Data from a population based cohort study involving 3778 mother-child pairs were linked with data from the state child protection agency to examine associations between child abuse and neglect and attention problems, measured using the Achenbach Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) and the Achenbach Young Adult Self Report (YASR).
RESULTS: 245 (6.5%) participants

Childhood asthma develops from a complex interaction among host and environmental factors in early life. Birth cohort studies have provided valuable insight into asthma risk factors and the natural history of wheezing and asthma through childhood and beyond. Early life aeroallergen sensitization and wheezing illnesses associated with virus and bacterial infections have been identified as pivotal risk factors for asthma inception. Recently, focus has turned toward protective factors that promote lung health in children. Studies in a variety of environments, including farms and urban communities

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) prevalence in the United States decreased approximately 60% in the three decades between the 1971-1972 and 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) surveys. We examined the effects of birth cohort on LTBI prevalence over time.
METHODS: Using weighted data analysis software to account for NHANES survey design, we calculated the difference in LTBI prevalence between 1971-1972 and 1999-2000 for birth cohorts corresponding to 5-year intervals (1912-1916, 1917-1921,1922-1926, 1927-1931, 1932-1936, 1937-1941, 1942-1946).

BACKGROUND: It is well known that the time from conception to early childhood has importance for health conditions that reach into later stages of life. Recent research supports this view, and diseases such as cardiovascular morbidity, cancer, mental illnesses, asthma, and allergy may all have component causes that act early in life. Exposures in this period, which influence fetal growth, cell divisions, and organ functioning, may have long-lasting impact on health and disease susceptibility.
METHODS: To investigate these issues the Danish National Birth Cohort (Better health for mother and c

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB) is a syndrome resulting from a complex list of underlying causes and factors, and whether these risk factors differ in the context of prior PTB history is less understood. The aim of this study was to explore whether PTB risk factors in a second pregnancy were different in women with versus without previous PTB.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using data from the birth cohort of the Center for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health (CIDACS) for the period 2001 to 2015. We used longitudinal transition models with multivariate logistic re

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate maternal and pregnancy characteristics associated with neonatal encephalopathy (NE).
STUDY DESIGN: We queried an administrative birth cohort from California between 2011 and 2017 to determine the association between each factor and NE with and without hypothermia treatment.
RESULTS: From 3 million infants born at 35 or more weeks of gestation, 6,857 cases of NE were identified (2.3 per 1000 births), 888 (13%) received therapeutic hypothermia. Risk factors for NE were stronger among cases receiving hypothermia therapy. Substance-related diagnosis, p

BACKGROUND: Although studies have examined the association between residential greenness and birth weight, there is no evidence regarding the association between residential greenness and fetal growth in utero. We aimed to investigate the associations of residential greenness with both fetal growth in utero and birth weight.
METHODS: A birth cohort (2014-2017) with 18,665 singleton pregnancies was established in Tongzhou Maternal and Child hospital of Beijing, China. Residential greenness was matched with maternal residential address and estimated from remote satellite data using normalized d

BACKGROUND: Birth defects are responsible for a large proportion of disability and infant mortality. Exposure to a variety of pesticides have been linked to increased risk of birth defects.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study to estimate the associations between a residence-based metric of agricultural pesticide exposure and birth defects. We linked singleton live birth records for 2003 to 2005 from the North Carolina (NC) State Center for Health Statistics to data from the NC Birth Defects Monitoring Program. Included women had residence at delivery inside NC and infants with gestatio

Background/Objectives: Maternal diet during pregnancy may influence neonatal outcomes, but dietary behaviours are socially patterned and were measured differently across cohorts. We therefore evaluated whether cohort-specific, partially harmonized maternal dietary patterns were associated with adverse birth outcomes after accounting for maternal and socioeconomic characteristics in two Italian birth cohorts. Methods: We analyzed 3234 mother-infant dyads from Piccolipiù (2011-2015) and 1564 from MAMI-MED (2020-ongoing). Maternal diet was captured by cohort-specific food questionnaires and group

A fetal growth restriction is related to adverse child outcomes. We investigated risk ratios and population-attributable fractions (PAF) of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants in the Japanese population. Among 28,838 infants from five ongoing prospective birth cohort studies under the Japan Birth Cohort Consortium, two-stage individual-participant data meta-analyses were conducted to calculate risk ratios and PAFs for SGA in advanced maternal age, pre-pregnancy underweight, and smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Risk ratio was calculated using modified Poisson analyses with

BACKGROUND: Fucoxanthin, a marine xanthophyll carotenoid, has been shown to exert beneficial health effects. Cell-based and animal-based experimental studies have shown that fucoxanthin has the potential to mitigate eczema symptoms. Hence, we sought to assess whether fucoxanthinol 3-arachidate, a fucoxanthin metabolite, measured in maternal serum at birth is associated with eczema development during early childhood.
METHODS: Data from the 1989/1990 Isle of Wight birth cohort were analyzed. We focused on data obtained from the 1, 2, and 4 years follow-ups. Fucoxanthinol 3-arachidate was measur

BACKGROUND: Birth positions may influence the risk of tears in the genital tract during birth. Birth positions are widely studied yet knowledge on genital tract tears following birth on a birth seat is inconclusive.
AIM: The objective of this study was to describe the proportion of genital tract tears in women who gave birth on a birth seat compared to women who did not.
METHOD: An observational cohort study based on birth information collected prospectively. In total 10 629 live, singleton, non-instrumental births in cephalic presentation were studied.
RESULTS: Fewer women who gave birth o

OBJECTIVE: Microbiome exposure at birth has been associated with long-term pediatric outcomes. However, it is difficult to determine if differences in outcomes are truly due to microbiome exposure at birth or other exposures after birth and in early infancy. Using a twin cohort, we sought to determine the association between length of exposure to the maternal vaginal-fecal microbiome and long-term pediatric health outcomes by comparing outcomes between presenting and nonpresenting twins born to women who labored.
METHODS: We performed a mail-based survey study of women in a single maternal-fe

BACKGROUND: Rapid development and westernisation in Kuwait and other Gulf states have been accompanied by rising rates of obesity, diabetes, asthma, and other chronic conditions. Prenatal experiences and exposures may be important targets for intervention. We undertook a prospective pregnancy-birth cohort study in Kuwait, the TRansgenerational Assessment of Children's Environmental Risk (TRACER) Study, to examine prenatal risk factors for early childhood obesity. This article describes the methodology and results of follow-up through birth.
METHODS: Women were recruited at antenatal clinical

BACKGROUND: Hypoplastic Left Heart syndrome (HLHS) is a group of cardiac malformations involving underdevelopment of the left heart with an inability to maintain systemic circulation. Because of a clinical impression of excess HLHS prevalence, we completed a medical record review of cases born from 1997 through 1999 who were Wisconsin residents and seen at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW).
METHODS: Cases were identified either in the CHW medical records database or the Division of Pediatric Cardiology database and confirmed by echocardiogram, catheterization, surgery, or autopsy. U.
