Born too soon: care before and between pregnancy to prevent preterm births: from evidence to action.

Providing care to adolescent girls and women before and between pregnancies improves their own health and wellbeing, as well as pregnancy and newborn outcomes, and can also reduce the rates of preterm birth. This paper has reviewed the evidence-based interventions and services for preventing preterm births, reported the findings from research priority exercise, and prescribed actions for taking this call further. Certain factors in the preconception period have been shown to increase the risk for prematurity and, therefore, preconception care services for all women of reproductive age should a

Prehypertension in Pregnancy and Risks of Small for Gestational Age Infant and Stillbirth.

It is not fully known whether maternal prehypertension is associated with increased risk of adverse fetal outcomes, and it is debated whether increases in blood pressure during pregnancy influence adverse fetal outcomes. We performed a population-based cohort study in nonhypertensive women with term (≥37 weeks) singleton births (n=157 446). Using normotensive (diastolic blood pressure [DBP] <80 mm Hg) women as reference, we calculated adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals between prehypertension (DBP 80-89 mm Hg) at 36 gestational weeks (late pregnancy) and risks of a small-for-ge

[Multiple births in The Netherlands, 1900-1988].

There are an estimated 120,000 twins and other multiples (all still alive) in The Netherlands. The age of this population (i.e. a quarter of a million persons, 1.6% of the total population) is slightly lower compared with The Netherlands as a whole. Alterations in the structure of mother's age and birth order can only partly explain the observed changes in multiple birth frequencies. The recent increase may be due to medical treatment of women with fertility problems. In addition dizygotic twin births appear to be largely responsible for the total development in multiple births. The changes in

Reconsidering childhood undernutrition: can birth spacing make a difference? An analysis of the 2002-2003 El Salvador National Family Health Survey.

It is well understood that undernutrition underpins much of child morbidity and mortality in less developed countries, but the causes of undernutrition are complex and interrelated, requiring a multipronged approach for intervention. This paper uses a subsample of 3853 children under age 5 from the most recent family health survey in El Salvador to examine the relationship between birth spacing and childhood undernutrition (stunting and underweight). While recent research and guidance suggest that birth spacing of three to five years contributes to lower levels of infant and childhood mortalit

Folic acid supplementation and interpregnancy interval.

BACKGROUND: Maternal folic acid supplementation between subsequent pregnancies may be important to reduce the risk of low folate status associated with short interpregnancy intervals. We examined how the prevalence of preconception folic acid use for a given pregnancy in Norwegian women varied according to the time interval from the previous pregnancy. METHODS: Analysis was based on 48 855 pairs of pregnancies with the second pregnancy included in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (birth years 1999-2009). Interpregnancy interval was defined as the time from birth of a child to the c

Risk factors associated with preterm birth after a prior term delivery.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the presence of newly acquired preterm birth (PTB) risk factors among primiparous women with no prior history of PTB. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Deliveries occurring within a large healthcare system from 2002 to 2012. POPULATION: Women with their first two consecutive pregnancies carried to ≥20(0/7)  weeks' gestation. METHODS: Those delivering the first pregnancy at term and the second preterm ≥20(0/7) and <37(0/7)  weeks (term-preterm cases) were compared with women with a term birth in their first two pregnancies (term-term c

Is early childhood development impeded by the birth timing of the younger sibling?

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether the timing of birth of the younger siblings was associated with the risk of the older siblings' developmental vulnerability in early childhood. METHODS: Linkage of population-level birth registration, hospital, and perinatal datasets to Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) records (2009-2015), enabled follow-up of a cohort of 32,324 Western Australia born singletons. Children with scores <10th percentile on an individual AEDC domain (Physical Health and Wellbeing; Social Competence; Emotional Maturity; Language and Cognitive Skills (school-bas

Effect of interpregnancy weight change on perinatal outcomes: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity is a well-known risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes, evidence is sparse about the effects of interpregnancy weight change on the risk of adverse perinatal complications in a subsequent pregnancy. The current study aims to assess the effect of interpregnancy weight change on the risk of developing gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, pregnancy induced hypertension, preterm birth, or delivering a large- or small-for-gestational age neonate. METHODS: Pubmed, Ovid Embase, ClinicalTrial.gov and the Cochrane library were systematically searched up until July 24th

Recurrent short interpregnancy interval: Maternal and neonatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with recurrent short interpregnancy interval (IPI) in women in their third delivery. METHODS: A retrospective computerized database study of all women who delivered their first three consecutive deliveries in a single tertiary medical center over 20 years (1999-2019). Maternal and neonatal outcomes of women with recurrent short IPI (<6 months between the 1st and 2nd pregnancy and the 2nd and 3rd pregnancy) were compared to women with recurrent optimal IPI (18-48 months), and to women with a single short IPI (<6 months between th

Short interpregnancy interval and poor fetal growth: Evaluating the role of pregnancy intention.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that short interpregnancy interval (the interval between delivery and estimated last menstrual period of a subsequent pregnancy) is associated with small for gestational age birth. It is controversial if this association is causal, as few studies have accounted for likely confounding factors such as unintended pregnancy. We examined the association between interpregnancy interval and infant birthweight, adjusting for pregnancy intention and other socio-economic and obstetrical risk factors. METHODS: We used data from the Scandinavian Successive S

Effects of different volumes of a water-soluble and biodegradable nesting material on behavior, pain, glycemia, farrowing traits, and performance in crated sows.

This study evaluated the effects of providing 3-15 kg of a soluble and biodegradable biopolymer-based enrichment material (blend of biodegradable polymers and natural fibers) to prepartum sows housed in farrowing crates. Fifteen sows were blocked by body weight and backfat thickness and assigned to three treatments: no enrichment material (CONT), 3 kg of enrichment material (BN3), or 15 kg of enrichment material with added nutritional value (BN15; 14.50 MJ ME/kg; composition: a blend of biodegradable natural polymers and natural fibers). The material was supplied 24 h before the expected farro

[Association of Birth Trauma with the Implementation of Obstetrical Monitoring Tools: A Retrospective Cohort Study].

INTRODUCTION: Lacerations are common in vaginal births. They can result in immense physical and psychological morbidity. Ongoing efforts are being made to reduce birth trauma. We implemented different obstetrical monitoring tools in the labor ward and evaluated their association with the incidence and distribution of different types of birth lacerations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed nulliparous and multiparous women with singleton term pregnancies in vertex presentation, who gave birth vaginally in our tertiary care center between October 2014 and September 2015. We evalu

Relationship Between Interpregnancy Interval and Adverse Perinatal and Neonatal Outcomes in Northern Alberta.

BACKGROUND: Birth outcomes are known to be associated with birth spacing, but there are population differences. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between interpregnancy intervals and perinatal and neonatal outcomes in a Canadian population during the era of mandatory folate fortification of food. METHODS: We conducted a study of 46 243 women who had two consecutive singleton births in northern Alberta between 1999 and 2007, using a linked provincial dataset. Perinatal outcomes of interest were preterm birth, low birth weight (LBW), small for gestational age, and perinat

Associated factors of pregnancy spacing among women of reproductive age Group in South of Iran: cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Optimal pregnancy spacing is an important incidence in reproductive women's health. Short or long pregnancy spacing leads to the greatest health, social and economic problems such as increase in maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this study is to assess the mean of pregnancy spacing and associated factors of pregnancy spacing among women of reproductive age group with recurrent event analysis. METHODS: The fertility history of 1350 women aged 15-49 years was collected in this cross-sectional study. The women were selected throug
