Maternal obesity, pregnancy weight gain, and birth weight and risk of colorectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Obesity is a well-established risk factor for CRC, and fetal or developmental origins of obesity may underlie its effect on cancer in adulthood. We examined associations of maternal obesity, pregnancy weight gain, and birth weight and CRC in adult offspring. DESIGN: The Child Health and Development Studies is a prospective cohort of women receiving prenatal care between 1959 and 1966 in Oakland, California (N=18 751 live births among 14 507 mothers). Clinical information was abstracted from mothers' medic

Weight estimation for low birth weight fetuses and macrosomic fetuses in Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with normal birth weight fetuses (2,500-4,000 g), accurate fetal weight estimation for fetuses with low or excessive weight is considered more important for fetal compromise prediction and labor management. New formulas were developed to estimate weight for low birth weight (LBW) fetuses and macrosomic fetuses, respectively. METHODS: A total of 523 fetuses with birth weight less than 2,500 g, 652 fetuses with normal birth weight, and 239 fetuses with birth weight more than 4,000 g were included in the study. As much as 25 existing formulas which incorporate regularly defin

Low birth weight, DNA methylation patterns in cord blood, and inflammation at birth.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) is a significant global health issue associated with an increased risk of long-term chronic diseases, yet its underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. DNA methylation serves as a crucial epigenetic mechanism for investigating these associations. Our study employed a unique model of birth weight-discordant monozygotic (MZ) twin neonates and a multi-level validation strategy to elucidate the mechanisms by which LBW affects immune function through DNA methylation at birth. METHODS: We performed genome-wide DNA methylation profiling using methylated DNA i

Decreasing Intubation for Ineffective Ventilation after Birth for Very Low Birth Weight Neonates.

UNLABELLED: Despite recommendations promoting noninvasive delivery room (DR) ventilation, local historical preterm DR noninvasive ventilation rates were low (50%-64%). Project aims were to improve DR noninvasive ventilation rate in very low birth weight (VLBW) neonates (<1500 g) with a focus on decreasing DR intubations for ineffective positive pressure ventilation (PPV). METHODS: We addressed drivers for improving noninvasive ventilation and decreasing intubations for ineffective PPV through plan-do-study-act cycles. Outcome measures were intubation for ineffective PPV (defined as intubation

Nasal CPAP (Infant Flow) applied at birth in extremely low birth weight newborns.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of nasal CPAP (Infant Flow) as a ventilatory support, applied at birth in spontaneously breathing, extremely low birth weight newborns (ELBW). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the clinical course of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in 97 ELBW, who needed ventilatory support. In all patients the noninvasive ventilatory support was introduced within the first minute of life. RESULTS: Among all analyzed newborns, 37.1% of patients were not intubated during hospitalization. Moreover, another 10.3% patients were intubated only due to surfactant administrati

Mathematics deficiencies in children with very low birth weight or very preterm birth.

Children with very low birth weight (VLBW, <1500 g) or very preterm birth (VPTB, <32 weeks gestational age or GA) have more mathematics disabilities or deficiencies (MD) and higher rates of mathematics learning disabilities (MLD) than normal birth weight term-born children (NBW, >2500 g and >36 weeks GA). MD are found even in children without global disorders in cognition or neurosensory status and when IQ is controlled, and they are associated with other learning problems and weaknesses in perceptual motor abilities and executive function. Factors related to poorer mathematics outcomes includ

Thermoregulation of the Extremely Low Birth Weight Neonate.

The birth of an extremely low birth weight (ELBW) neonate is complex because of their immaturity. Respiratory and hemodynamic stabilization often takes precedence in the immediate delivery period. While establishing effective breathing and circulation is vital to the survival of the neonate, it is crucial to understand that other adverse outcomes can occur during the resuscitation and transport of the ELBW neonate. Impaired thermoregulation is one of the most detrimental adverse outcomes during the golden hour period and later in the neonatal intensive care unit. Hypothermia is an independent

Extreme Birth Weight and Metabolic Syndrome in Children.

Small and large birth weights (BWs) for gestational age (GA) represent extremes, but the correlation between extreme BW and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we examined this correlation in obese children based on changes in their metabolic profile from childhood to adolescence. A retrospective observational study was performed on 535 obese patients aged 0-18 years in the Clinical and Emergency Hospital for Children "Louis Turcanu" in Timisoara, Romania, based on clinical and biological data from January 2015 to December 2019. We emphasized the links betwe

Toxoplasmosis impact on prematurity and low birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii, one of the most common parasites, causes toxoplasmosis, one of the most frequent zoonotic diseases worldwide. T. gondii infects about one-third of the world's population. T. gondii infection is generally considered a major risk for spontaneous abortion, prematurity and low birth weight in the animal sphere. Less commonly, a toxoplasma serological profile is correlated with the particular data of delivery. Acute T. gondii infection during pregnancy often leads to spontaneous abortion and/or a severe injury of the eyes, brain, and other structures of the foetus. La

Low birth weight and PM2.5 in Puerto Rico.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) has been associated with adverse health outcomes across the lifespan. Among ethnic/racial minority populations, few studies have examined the association between LBW (<2,500 or ≥2,500 g) and prenatal exposure to air pollution, a key modifiable environmental risk factor. METHODS: We examined the association between LBW and prenatal exposure to PM2.5 in a Hispanic and black population in Puerto Rico between 1999 and 2013, adjusting for individual and municipality-level confounders. We used modified Poisson regression to estimate the association and performed s

Low Birth Weight, Blood Pressure and Renal Susceptibility.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to highlight the clinical significance of increased renal risk that has its origins in fetal life. This review will also discuss the critical need to identify therapeutic interventions for use in a pregnancy complicated by placental dysfunction and intrauterine growth restriction that can mitigate the developmental origins of kidney disease without inflicting additional harm on the developing fetus. RECENT FINDINGS: A reduction in nephron number is a contributory factor in the pathogenesis of hypertension and kidney disease in low birth wei

Birth weight and risk of childhood acute leukaemia.

Studies of risk factors for acute leukaemia are inconclusive. This case-control study was done in West Azerbaijan province, Islamic Republic of Iran, to determine the relationship between birth weight and acute leukaemia in children aged under 15 years. For every patient 2 age- and sex-matched controls were selected from hospital and community populations. Of 130 cases diagnosed over the period 2003-2009,108 (83.1%) had lymphoblastic and 22 (16.9%) myloblastic type. Significantly more of them were male than female (55.4% versus 44.6%). Permissive hyperglycemia in extremely low birth weight infants.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of permissive hyperglycemia up to < 300 mg/dL in extremely-low-birth-weight infants (ELBWIs). We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 260 live-born ELBWIs at Samsung Medical Center between 2004 and 2008, grouped according to peak blood glucose level and management during the first 14 days of life. The groups were normoglycemia (N), blood glucose ≤ 200 mg/dL; permissive hyperglycemia (P), blood glucose 201-299 mg/dL without insulin treatment; treated hyperglycemia (T), blood glucose ≥ 300 mg/dL with insulin. Only 15% of patients were

Birth weight curves tailored to maternal world region.

BACKGROUND: Newborns of certain immigrant mothers are smaller at birth than those of domestically born mothers. Contemporary, population-derived percentile curves for these newborns are lacking, as are estimates of their risk of being misclassified as too small or too large using conventional rather than tailored birth weight curves. METHODS: We completed a population-based study of 766 688 singleton live births in Ontario from 2002 to 2007. Smoothed birth weight percentile curves were generated for males and females, categorized by maternal world region of birth: Canada (63.5%), Europe/Weste
