Transmission of brucellosis from elk to cattle and bison, Greater Yellowstone area, U.S.A., 2002-2012.

Bovine brucellosis has been nearly eliminated from livestock in the United States. Bison and elk in the Greater Yellowstone Area remain reservoirs for the disease. During 1990-2002, no known cases occurred in Greater Yellowstone Area livestock. Since then, 17 transmission events from wildlife to livestock have been investigated.

An observational study of mortality on bison farms in Saskatchewan with special emphasis on malignant catarrhal fever.

In December 2011, the Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF) Task Force in Saskatchewan recommended that research be conducted on the relationship between the proximity of bison and sheep under typical commercial production settings and bison deaths due to MCF. The objective of this study was to evaluate all causes of death in bison herds and compare the incidence of MCF in herds at varying distances of exposure from sheep operations. Necropsies were completed on 76 of 133 bison reported to have died during the 18-month study period. A total of 7 MCF deaths was reported from 2 large herds within 1.0

Molecular cloning of CD18 of bison, deer and elk, and comparison with that of other ruminants and non-ruminants.

Pneumonia caused by Mannheimia haemolytica is an important disease of cattle, domestic sheep, bighorn sheep and goats. Leukotoxin (Lkt) produced by M. haemolytica is cytolytic to all leukocyte subsets of these species. Lkt utilizes CD18, the beta subunit of beta(2)-integrins, as its functional receptor on leukocytes of these species. Cytotoxicity assays revealed that leukocytes from bison, deer, and elk are also susceptible to Lkt-induced cytolysis. The availability of cDNA encoding CD18 of bison, deer and elk would facilitate the comparison of a greater number of ruminant CD18 cDNA with that

Transcriptional profiles of vaccine-induced protection in bovine herpesvirus-1 and Mycoplasma bovis-challenged bison.

INTRODUCTION: Mycoplasma bovis causes chronic respiratory disease with high mortality rates in American bison (Bison bison). A recent study showed that a subunit vaccine containing M. bovis elongation factor thermal unstable (EFTu) and heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) antigens induced immunity and enhanced protection in bison, resulting in reduced lung lesions and bacterial loads following experimental M. bovis challenge. This study aimed to characterize the transcriptional responses underlying this protection in vaccinated (n = 5) compared to unvaccinated control (n = 4) bison following M. bovis

Orally administered live BCG and heat-inactivated Mycobacterium bovis protect bison against experimental bovine tuberculosis.

Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) is an infectious disease of livestock and wildlife species that is caused by pathogenic members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex such as Mycobacterium bovis. Due to the introduction of M. bovis-infected bison in the 1920s, BTB is now endemic in wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) population within the Wood Buffalo National Park (WBNP) in northern Canada. This disease poses a grave threat to the long-term survival of this ecologically and culturally important species and has the potential to cause zoonotic TB and spill over to BTB-free livestock and other biso

A case of mortality in a re-introduced European bison associated with severe pneumonia caused by Dictyocaulus viviparus.

BACKGROUND: Dictyocaulosis is a parasitic disease caused by pulmonary nematodes from genus Dictyocaulus affecting various ungulate hosts. It can cause verminous bronchopneumonia and for heavily infected individuals, fatal outcomes can occur. CASE PRESENTATION: The study describes the case of a male European bison which died three months after relocation from Slovakia to one of the reintroduction areas in Nucșoara village, Făgăraș Mountains, Romania. Necropsy revealed the presence of pulmonary nematodes in the respiratory tract. Morphology and molecular diagnosis was performed and Dictyocaulus

Investigation, control and epizootiology of anthrax in a geographically isolated, free-roaming bison population in northern Canada.

In July 1993 anthrax caused significant mortality in an isolated, free-ranging population of bison (Bos bison athabascae) west of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. There was no previous record of anthrax in this area. An emergency response was undertaken to reduce the scale of environmental contamination and dissemination of anthrax spores and hence to reduce the likelihood of future outbreaks. One-hundred-and-seventy-two bison, 3 moose (Alces alces), and 3 black bear (Ursus americanus) carcasses were found. Visual detection of carcasses was enhanced with the use of an airborne, r

First Steps into the Wild - Exploration Behavior of European Bison after the First Reintroduction in Western Europe.

Biodiversity is rapidly declining globally. One strategy to help to conserve species is to breed species in captivity and release them into suitable habitats. The way that reintroduced animals explore new habitats and/or disperse from the release site is rarely studied in detail and represents key information for the success of reintroduction projects. The European bison (Bison bonasus L. 1758) was the largest surviving herbivore of the post-glacial megafauna in Europe before it became extinct in the wild, surviving only in captivity since 1919. We investigated the exploration behavior of a he

Agreement between the caudal fold test and serological tests for the detection of Mycobacterium bovis infection in bison.

The objective of this study was to estimate agreement between the caudal fold test (CFT) and different serological tests for the detection of Mycobacterium bovis infection in bison by using prevalence-adjusted bias-adjusted kappa (PABAK). A total of 212 of wild wood bison from Wood Buffalo National Park were tested with the CFT as well as several serological tests: fluorescent polarization assay (FPA), multiantigen print immunoassay (MAPIA), rapid lateral-flow test (RT) and dual path platform test (DPP). For RT, 3 variations were conducted using 30μl of serum (RT 30), 20μl of serum (RT 20) and

Immune responses and safety after dart or booster vaccination of bison with Brucella abortus strain RB51.

One alternative for management of brucellosis in Yellowstone National Park bison (Bison bison) is vaccination of calves and yearlings. Although Brucella abortus strain RB51 vaccination protects bison against experimental challenge, the effect of booster vaccinations was unknown. This study characterized immunologic responses after dart or booster vaccination of bison with Brucella abortus strain RB51. In two studies, 8- to 10-month-old female bison were inoculated with saline (n = 14), hand vaccinated with 1.1 × 10(10) to 2.0 × 10(10) CFU of RB51 (n = 21), or dart vaccinated with 1.8 × 10(10)

Pathogenesis and epidemiology of brucellosis in yellowstone bison: serologic and culture results from adult females and their progeny.

Our objective in this prospective study was to determine the natural course of Brucella abortus infection in cohorts of seropositive and seronegative, female bison (Bison bison) and their offspring in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) for 5 yr. We collected specimens from 53 adult females and 25 calves at least once and from 45 adults and 22 calves more than once. Annual seroconversion rates (negative to positive) were relatively high (23% for calves and juvenile bison, 6% in the total sample of adult female bison in our study, and 11% in the adult females that began the study as seronegatives).

Molecular epidemiology of Brucella abortus isolates from cattle, elk, and bison in the United States, 1998 to 2011.

A variable-number tandem repeat (VNTR) protocol targeting 10 loci in the Brucella abortus genome was used to assess genetic diversity among 366 field isolates recovered from cattle, bison, and elk in the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) and Texas during 1998 to 2011. Minimum spanning tree (MST) and unweighted-pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) analyses of VNTR data identified 237 different VNTR types, among which 14 prominent clusters of isolates could be identified. Cattle isolates from Texas segregated into three clusters: one comprised of field isolates from 1998 to 2005, one comp

Comparison of abortion and infection after experimental challenge of pregnant bison and cattle with Brucella abortus strain 2308.

A comparative study was conducted using data from naive bison (n = 45) and cattle (n = 46) from 8 and 6 studies, respectively, in which a standardized Brucella abortus strain 2308 experimental challenge was administered during midgestation. The incidence of abortion, fetal infection, uterine or mammary infection, or infection in maternal tissues after experimental challenge was greater (P < 0.05) in bison than in cattle. In animals that did abort, the time between experimental challenge and abortion was shorter (P < 0.05) for bison than for cattle. Brucella colonization of four target tissues

Emergency response planning for anthrax outbreaks in bison herds of northern Canada: a balance between policy and science.

Anthrax outbreaks in northern Canada have implications for ongoing recovery efforts for the threatened wood bison and may pose a health risk to humans, other wildlife, and domestic livestock. RWED and WBNP maintain Anthrax Emergency Response Plans (AERPs) for their respective jurisdictions. An AERP is a pre-planned logistical framework for responding effectively and rapidly to an outbreak so as to minimize spread of the disease, reduce environmental load of spores available for future outbreaks, and minimize risk to public health. In this paper, we describe the main components of an AERP and o

Efficacy of dart or booster vaccination with strain RB51 in protecting bison against experimental Brucella abortus challenge.

This study characterized the efficacy of the Brucella abortus strain RB51 vaccine in bison when delivered by single intramuscular vaccination (hand RB51), by single pneumatic dart delivery (dart RB51), or as two vaccinations approximately 13 months apart (booster RB51) in comparison to control bison. All bison were challenged intraconjunctivally in midgestation with 10(7) CFU of B. abortus strain 2308 (S2308). Bison were necropsied and sampled within 72 h of abortion or delivery of a live calf. Compared to nonvaccinated bison, bison in the booster RB51 treatment had a reduced (P < 0.05) incide

Infection of cattle with Brucella abortus biovar 1 isolated from a bison in Wood Buffalo National Park.

An experiment was conducted to determine if cattle could be infected with a strain of Brucella abortus biovar 1 isolated from a bison in Wood Buffalo National Park. Three pregnant cows inoculated conjunctivally with 5.7 x 10(8) cfu of the bacterium, and their subsequent calves, showed seroconversion on standard serological tests for bovine brucellosis, and large numbers of the bacterium were isolated from numerous tissues at necropsy. A 4th cow that was moved into the pen that previously contained the inoculated cows subsequently showed seroconversion, and the same strain of B. abortus biovar
