Lactational period is of extreme importance for nourishing and fostering growth in neonates. Bisphenol S (BPS) a congener of bisphenol A (BPA) is an emerging environmental toxicant reported to have deleterious effects on reproductive health. Indirect exposure of BPS to the suckling infants via breastmilk is less explored although it can lead to various public health issues. Therefore, we investigated harmful effects of lactational BPS exposure on pre-pubertal and pubertal testicular functions of the offspring and its possible amelioration by melatonin. Lactating dams were divided into 4 groups

Bisphenol S (BPS) is an alternative chemical to bisphenol A commonly used in food packaging materials. It raises concerns due to potential adverse effects on human health. However, limited evidence exists regarding reproductive toxicity from BPS exposure, and the mechanism of associated transgenerational toxicity remains unclear. In this study, pregnant SD rats were exposed to two different doses of BPS (0.05 or 20 mg/kg) from GD6 to PND21. The objective was to investigate reproductive and transmissible toxicity induced by BPS, explore endocrine effects, and uncover potential underlying mechan

Recent studies show that bisphenol S (BPS) induces multiple adverse effects in exposed organisms; however, the maternal effects of BPS exposure remain poorly understood. Here, we expose adult female zebrafish to environmentally relevant concentrations of BPS (0, 1, 10, 30 μg/L) and 1 μg/L of 17-β-estradiol (E2) as a positive control for 60 days. Females were then paired with BPS-unexposed males and their offspring were raised in control water for 6 months. Maternal exposure to BPS was found to alter social behavior and anxiety response in a dose-specific manner in male offspring. Group prefere

BACKGROUND: Breast milk is the optimal source of nutrition for infants but can also expose them to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), among other environmental contaminants.
AIM: To determine concentrations of non-persistent phenolic EDCs (three bisphenols, four parabens [PBs], and six benzophenones [BPs]), in colostrum samples from Panamanian mothers and to examine associated reproductive, sociodemographic, and life-style factors.
METHODS: Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction was used to measure concentrations of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol S (BPS), methyl- (MeP)

Endocrine disrupting-chemicals (EDCs) are chemical compounds found in the environment that can have adverse impacts on human health. Among these agents are tributyltin (TBT) and bisphenol S (BPS). TBT is used in anti-fouling paints, and its indiscriminate use has health repercussions. BPS is found in plastic products and marketed as a safe alternative to bisphenol A (BPA). Little is known about the effects resulting from interactions between different EDCs on the organisms. The aim of this study was to analyze changes induced by exposure to these compounds in hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HP

Bisphenol S (BPS) has become extensively used in the manufacturing of consumer products. BPS mainly enters the body through food and water, with oral exposure targeting the gastrointestinal tract. However, its safety profile remains contentious and warrants further investigation. In this study, we aimed to assess whether BPS exerts harmful effects on the body in the absence of overt pathological damage. Our results revealed that although BPS did not lead to significant histopathological damage, it induced intestinal barrier dysfunction. Additionally, in vitro investigations utilizing NCM460 ce

Obesity triggers numerous other disorders, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD). Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDC) such as Bisphenol A (BPA) have obesogenic effects, which have been replaced by Bisphenol S (BPS). The chronicity of obesity and MASLD, as well as BPS exposure, compromises Mitochondrial Biogenesis (MBG) and triggers the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether BPS exposure affects hepatic morphology, MBG, and ER stress pathways in the liver in male mice fe

BACKGROUND: Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as bisphenols and phthalates might lead to adverse fertility and early pregnancy outcomes.
METHODS: This study was embedded in the Generation R Next Study, a population-based cohort study from preconception onwards. Urinary phthalate and bisphenol concentrations were assessed in the preconception period (938 women), defined as the period in which couples were actively trying to conceive, and early pregnancy (1,366 women and 1,202 men, mean gestational age at sampling 8·6 weeks). Time to pregnancy and miscarriage were assessed using q

Environmental chemicals can interfere with the endocrine axis hence they are classified as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Bisphenol S (BPS) is used in the manufacture of consumer products because of its superior thermal stability and is thought to be a safe replacement chemical for its analog bisphenol A (BPA). However, the safety profile of these compounds alone or in the presence of other EDCs is yet to be fully investigated. Also, the estrogenic chemical 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2) and a constituent of female oral contraceptives for women, is present in water supplies. To simulate c

Bisphenol S (BPS), introduced as a replacement for Bisphenol A (BPA), demonstrates high environmental persistence across various environmental compartments, including the aquatic ecosystems. However, only a limited number of studies have investigated the effects of BPS on aquatic vertebrates. In this study, Xenopus laevis tadpoles were exposed to BPS from fertilization until 6 days post-fertilization, reaching stage 45 with a normal rate of survival. However, BPS exposure at 10-6 M and 10-4 M differentially alters levels of Hsp stress proteins. Hsp70 stress protein level remains unchanged, whi

Because of its possible adverse effects on human health and its ubiquitous nature, Bisphenol A (BPA) is gradually being replaced by presumably safer alternatives like Bisphenol S (BPS). However, data regarding the effects of developmental exposure to BPS on pregnancy and fetal outcomes are very scarce. Here we show that perinatal exposure to BPS at a very low dose significantly impairs postnatal growth and affects the placental transcriptome in rats. Oral exposure one week before mating and during gestation and lactation to a very low dose of BPS (25 ng/kg/day) is associated with impaired post

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known endocrine disruptor that imperfectly mimics the effects of physiologic estrogens via membrane-bound estrogen receptors (mERα, mERβ, and GPER/GPR30), thereby initiating nongenomic signaling. Bisphenol S (BPS) is an alternative to BPA in plastic consumer products and thermal paper.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the nongenomic activities of BPS, we examined signaling pathways it evoked in GH3/B6/F10 rat pituitary cells alone and together with the physiologic estrogen estradiol (E2). Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)- and c-Jun-N-terminal kinas

Bisphenol S (BPS), an emerging substitute of bisphenol A, is widely used in consumer products. However, its neurodevelopmental toxicity and underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using a three-stage human embryonic stem cell (hESC-H9) neural differentiation model, cells were exposed to 375 μM BPS, 375 μM BPS + 5 μM NMDAR inhibitor (MK801), 375 μM BPS + 5 μM ERK pathway inhibitor (U0126), and a 0.1% DMSO solvent control, respectively. High-content screening, qPCR, and Western blot were utilized to analyze neuromorphology, intracellular Ca2+ levels, and related genes/proteins expression

Due to relatively lower toxicity, bisphenol S (BPS) has become an alternative to previously used bisphenol A. Nevertheless, the occurrence of BPS and its ecological impact have recently attracted increasing attentions because the toxicology effect of BPS with life cycle or multigenerational exposure on aquatic organisms remains questionable. Herein, Daphnia magna (D. magna) multigenerational bioassays spanning four generations (F0-F3) and single-generation recovery (F1 and F3) in clean water were used to investigate the ecotoxicology of variable chronic BPS exposure. For both assays, four kind

Manganese ion [Mn(II)] is a background constituent existing in natural waters. Herein, it was found that only 59% of bisphenol A (BPA), 47% of bisphenol F (BPF), 65% of acetaminophen (AAP), and 49% of 4-tert-butylphenol (4-tBP) were oxidized by 20 μM of Fe(VI), while 97% of BPA, 95% of BPF, 96% of AAP, and 94% of 4-tBP could be oxidized by the Fe(VI)/Mn(II) system [20 μM Fe(VI)/20 μM Mn(II)] at pH 7.0. Further investigations showed that bisphenol S (BPS) was highly reactive with reactive iron species (RFeS) but was sluggish with reactive manganese species (RMnS). By using BPS and methyl phenyl

Bisphenol S (BPS) is a widely detected environmental toxin with the potential to increase the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the effects of BPS on the progression of high fat diet (HFD)-induced NAFLD remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the role and underlying mechanisms of action of BPS in HFD-induced NAFLD. Our results showed that BPS exposure (50 and 500 μg/kg bodyweight/day) promoted the progression of NAFLD, which was evidenced by increased liver/body weight ratio, elevated serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels, and more a

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous compounds that interfere with the endocrine system by mimicking or blocking the action of endogenous hormones such as estrogens, androgens, and thyroid hormones. This systematic review aims to evaluate the current epidemiological evidence linking EDC exposure with adverse reproductive outcomes in males and females of reproductive age. A total of 14 observational studies published between 2014 and 2024 were included following structured searches in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The most commonly studied EDCs included bisphenol A (BPA), i

Male infertility, often linked to impaired spermatogenesis, is increasingly associated with environmental pollutants such as bisphenol S (BPS), a common bisphenol A substitute, yet its molecular mechanisms in human Sertoli cells remain unclear. In this study, immortalized human Sertoli cells were exposed to BPS, and cell viability, proliferation, and transcriptomic changes were assessed, with bulk RNA sequencing integrated with single-cell transcriptomic profiles from non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) testes to identify key regulatory factors. Potential BPS targets were predicted via pharmacop

BP-3 is the most widely used ultraviolet absorber, but its toxic effects and mechanisms far from being elucidated. This study evaluated the male developmental reproductive toxicities and mechanism of low-doses of BP-3. The results indicated that BP-3 (2.28 and 228 μg/L) led to a decrease in sperm quantity, quality and testosterone level, impaired blood-testis barrier (BTB) integrity and cytoskeleton, accompanied by aggravated oxidative stress in testes of mice on postnatal day 56 (PND 56). Notably, chemokine CCL27, a driver of oxidative stress, was significantly upregulated induced by BP-3. Si

Bisphenol S (BPS) has been introduced into the industry as a safer alternative to Bisphenol A. BPS has been detected in human urine sample and induces oxidative stress in vitro and exhibit endocrine disrupting potential in vivo. However, data regarding effect of BPS in mammals is very limited and only a few studies have been carried out. In the present study, direct effect of BPS exposure on oxidative stress and testosterone concentration in rat testis was evaluated in vitro. BPS exposure not only induced oxidative stress but also enhanced antioxidant enzymes activity in the tissue. Based on i
