Orthodontic treatment of children with anterior open bite and posterior crossbite: An analysis of the stomatognathic system.

Dental malocclusions are deviations from normalities due to the inadequate growth and development of the dental arch which provides functional changes to the stomatognathic system. The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the electromyographic activity (EMG) the masseter and temporalis muscles, strength of the orofacial tissues and occlusal force of children with anterior open bite (n = 15) and posterior crossbite (n = 20), 7 days after the removal of the orthodontic apparatus. A fixed horizontal palatal crib was used in the treatment of anterior open bite and the fixed appliances Hy

Influence of all-on-4 implant angles on stability and crestal bone - A finite element optimization analysis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The all-on-4 implant technique is a restoration method designed for patients with complete or extensive edentulous, requiring only four implants to support a full-arch denture. However, the inclination angle configuration of implants directly affects force distribution and stability. Therefore, this study employs optimization techniques to investigate the impact of mesial and distal implant angle in mandibular all-on-4 cases on the biomechanics of bone tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study established three-dimensional models of the mandible, implant, and framework. Fi

Masticatory function in subacute TMD patients before and after treatment.

Masticatory function can be impaired in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) patients. We investigated whether treatment of subacute non-specific TMD patients may influence oral function and clinical outcome measures. Fifteen patients with subacute TMD participated in the study. We quantified masticatory performance, maximum voluntary bite force, muscle activity and chewing cycle duration before and after treatment. Masticatory performance and bite force of patients were compared with the results obtained for an age- and gender-matched group of subjects without TMD complaints. Furthermore, we de

Morphology, ornaments and performance in two chameleon ecomorphs: is the casque bigger than the bite?

The evolution of ecomorphs within a species may represent either unique evolutionary events or multiple convergent events in similar environments. Functional studies of differing morphological traits of ecomorphs have been important to elucidate their role in adaptive radiations. The Cape dwarf chameleon, Bradypodion pumilum, has two ecomorphs: a large, brightly colored, ornate form found in closed habitats, and a small, dull form with reduced ornamentation found in open vegetation. The typical form is known to use casque size to communicate fighting ability, but it is unknown whether this is

Lack of Efficacy of Low-Dose Cyclobenzaprine on Electromyographic Activity Related to Sleep Bruxism: A Randomized Crossover Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial.

Sleep bruxism (SB) is a motor activity characterized by repetitive masticatory muscle contractions during sleep, commonly associated with tooth damage and jaw pain or headache. Pharmacological management strategies targeting its central nervous system-related mechanisms remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate whether a low dose of a central muscle relaxant, cyclobenzaprine, reduces SB-related muscle activity, maximum voluntary bite force and self-reported bruxism awareness. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial was conducted. Twenty participants underwen

Estimating maximum bite performance in Tyrannosaurus rex using multi-body dynamics.

Bite mechanics and feeding behaviour in Tyrannosaurus rex are controversial. Some contend that a modest bite mechanically limited T. rex to scavenging, while others argue that high bite forces facilitated a predatory mode of life. We use dynamic musculoskeletal models to simulate maximal biting in T. rex. Models predict that adult T. rex generated sustained bite forces of 35 000-57 000 N at a single posterior tooth, by far the highest bite forces estimated for any terrestrial animal. Scaling analyses suggest that adult T. rex had a strong bite for its body size, and that bite performance incre

Phantom bite: a real or a phantom diagnosis? A case report.

This case report describes computer-guided occlusal therapy in a patient who met the unified diagnostic criteria for phantom bite. After a review of the patient's medical history, along with a diagnostic work-up that included cone beam computed tomography, temporomandibular joint vibration analysis, and digital occlusal analysis, problematic dental components were discovered (including prolonged disclusion time and imbalanced bite force). A digital occlusal analyzer evaluated the patient's occlusion and systematically guided the necessary changes. After reduction of the disclusion time and cor

Masticatory biomechanics of red and grey squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris and Sciurus carolinensis) modelled with multibody dynamics analysis.

The process of feeding in mammals is achieved by moving the mandible relative to the cranium to bring the teeth into and out of occlusion. This process is especially complex in rodents which have a highly specialized configuration of jaw adductor muscles. Here, we used the computational technique of multi-body dynamics analysis (MDA) to model feeding in the red (Sciurus vulgaris) and grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) and determine the relative contribution of each jaw-closing muscle in the generation of bite forces. The MDA model simulated incisor biting at different gapes. A series of 'vir

A deep dive into the static force transmission of the human masticatory system and its biomechanical effects on the temporomandibular joint.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the biomechanical behavior and reveal the force transmission patterns of the human masticatory system through advanced three-dimensional finite element (FE) models. METHODS: The FE model was constructed according to the medical images of a healthy male adult. It contains full skull structures, detailed temporomandibular joints (TMJs) with discs, complete dentitions, masticatory muscles, and related ligaments. Several static bite scenarios were simulated to demonstrate the effects of bite positions and muscle force recruitments on the force transmissio

Sustained force production by the jaw-adductor muscles of a megalophagous frog, Ceratophrys cranwelli.

Most frogs have weak jaws that play a relatively minor role in tongue-mediated prey capture. Horned frogs (Ceratophrys spp.), however, follow the projection of a large tongue with a vice-like grip of their jaws to hold and immobilize prey. Prey include relatively large vertebrates, which they may restrain for minutes to possibly hours. High endurance behaviors, such as prolonged biting, require that muscles be capable of sustained force production. The feeding behavior of Ceratophrys suggests that their jaw-adductor muscles may be capable of powering sustained bites for long periods. We examin

Spontaneous and Bite-Evoked Muscle Pain Are Mediated by a Common Nociceptive Pathway With Differential Contribution by TRPV1.

UNLABELLED: Spontaneous pain and function-associated pain are prevalent symptoms of multiple acute and chronic muscle pathologies. We established mouse models for evaluating spontaneous pain and bite-evoked pain from masseter muscle, and determined the roles of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1) and the contribution of TRPV1- or neurokinin 1 (NK1)-dependent nociceptive pathways. Masseter muscle inflammation increased Mouse Grimace Scale scores and face-wiping behavior, which were attenuated by pharmacological or genetic inhibition of TRPV1. Masseter inflam

Sex-specific performance, trade-offs and trait repeatability across the lifetime of the world's largest semelparous mammal (Dasyurus hallucatus).

The activities that define survival and reproductive success in animals depend on their physical performance. However, performance is a complex trait, and organisms must balance competing demands of multiple underlying factors every time they undertake an activity. For example, the morphology that increases bite force (i.e. increased head size) - improving fighting ability - should constrain sprinting performance by adding mass to the body. Consequently, trade-offs between fighting and escape performance might be sex specific where sexual dimorphism is present, or pronounced in animals with ex
