[Human hand bite causing soft tissue infection and finger amputation: a case report].

A 50-year-old female patient presented to our institution with a human bite wound on her left hand. Her complaints started 15 days ago after her husband bit her hand. Oral antibiotics and local wound treatment had been given by another medical center to which she first presented. The treatment was changed to intramuscular antibiotics after her complaints worsened. The patient was neither hospitalized nor immobilized. She then presented to our clinic with deep wound infection. After hospitalization, intravenous (IV) antibiotics were given and open debridement was performed. F b hemolytic strept

The human bite injury: a clinical audit and discussion regarding the management of this alcohol fuelled phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: Human bite injuries are both deceptive and challenging in their presentation and management. They remain a frequent presentation to our unit, most often following late night alcohol fuelled aggression. AIMS: To audit the management of these wounds, with particular focus on infective complications and outcomes. METHODS: A three year retrospective chart review was undertaken on all patients referred to the plastic surgery unit from 1 January 2003 through to 31 December 2005. RESULTS: A total of 92 patients with 96 human bite wounds were identified. The majority were male (92%). Al

Reconstruction of a large defect of the ear using a composite graft following a human bite injury.

Human bites to the ear are not an uncommon injury as a consequence of brawls or even contact sports like rugby. Untreated, the cosmetic outcome of such injury is unsightly. This case history documents how a patient, who had two-thirds of his external ear bitten off, was treated successfully by replacing the part as a composite graft. The segment replanted was minimally trimmed but inset to allow maximal soft tissue apposition at the skin edges. An episode of postoperative venous congestion was treated with leeches. Patience was exercised rather than early debridement of any struggling tissue.

The structure and behavioral patterns of the human population affected by ixodid tick bites in Irkutsk Region, Eastern Siberia, Russia.

The bites of hard ticks are the major route of transmission of tick-borne infections to humans, causing thousands of cases of diseases worldwide. However, the characteristics of the human population that is exposed to tick bites are still understudied. This work is aimed at characterizing both the structure of the population directly contacting ticks and the human behavioral features associated with tick bites. We studied 25,970 individuals who sought medical help after a tick bite at the Centre for Diagnostics and Prevention of Tick-borne Infections (CDPTBI) in Irkutsk City (Russian Federatio

Characterization of Bacteroides forsythus strains from cat and dog bite wounds in humans and comparison with monkey and human oral strains.

Bacteroides forsythus strains recovered from cat and dog bite wound infections in humans (n = 3), monkey oral strains (n = 3), and the human oral ATCC 43037 type strain were characterized by using phenotypic characteristics, enzymatic tests, whole cell fatty acid analysis, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis, PCR fingerprinting, and 16S rDNA (genes coding for rRNA) sequencing. All three bite wound isolates grew on brucella agar supplemented with 5% sheep blood, vitamin K1, and hemin. These strains, unlike the ATCC strain and previously described monkey

Serological biomarker for assessing human exposure to Aedes mosquito bites during a randomized vector control intervention trial in northeastern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Aedes mosquitoes are vectors for several major arboviruses of public health concern including dengue viruses. The relationships between Aedes infestation and disease transmission are complex wherein the epidemiological dynamics can be difficult to discern because of a lack of robust and sensitive indicators for predicting transmission risk. This study investigates the use of anti-Aedes saliva antibodies as a serological biomarker for Aedes mosquito bites to assess small scale variations in adult Aedes density and dengue virus (DENV) transmission risk in northeastern Thailand. Epidemiology of human exposure to rabies in Nunavik: incidence, the role of dog bites and their context, and victim profiles.

BACKGROUND: In Nunavik, Arctic rabies is still endemic due to a spillover from wildlife to dogs. The prevention of human exposure and the management of potential exposure is a significant public health concern in this region. METHODS: This study retrospectively describes cases of potential exposure to rabies in humans as reported to the Nunavik Public Health Board through their registry of reported cases. We used multi-correspondence analysis as well as univariable and multivariable regression models to test for differences between children and adults in reported cases, and to examine the con

How often do mosquitoes bite humans in southern England? A standardised summer trial at four sites reveals spatial, temporal and site-related variation in biting rates.

BACKGROUND: This field-based study examined the abundance and species complement of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) attracted to humans at four sites in the United Kingdom (UK). The study used a systematic approach to directly measure feeding by mosquitoes on humans at multiple sites and using multiple volunteers. Quantifying how frequently humans are bitten in the field by mosquitoes is a fundamental parameter in assessing arthropod-borne virus transmission. METHODS: Human landing catches were conducted using a standardised protocol by multiple volunteers at four rural sites between July and

Rabid fox bites and human rabies in a village community in southern India: epidemiological and laboratory investigations, management and follow-up.

Human rabies transmitted from wild animals is rarely reported in endemic countries like India, where nearly 95% deaths occur due to bites from rabid dogs. In this paper, we report an incidence of rabid fox bites in a village in southern part of India involving 18 individuals, including 4 children. All people had category III exposures, including bites on the face and neck. The attacking fox was killed by the forest department and buried immediately. The victims of the fox bite did not receive appropriate and adequate postexposure treatment. Thirteen days after the bite, one of the bite victims

Modelling modifiable factors associated with the probability of human rabies deaths among self-reported victims of dog bites in Abuja, Nigeria.

Canine-mediated rabies kills tens of thousands of people annually in lesser-developed communities of Asia, Africa, and the Americas, primarily through bites from infected dogs. Multiple rabies outbreaks have been associated with human deaths in Nigeria. However, the lack of quality data on human rabies hinders advocacy and resource allocation for effective prevention and control. We obtained 20 years of dog bite surveillance data across 19 major hospitals in Abuja, incorporating modifiable and environmental covariates. To overcome the challenge of missing information, we used a Bayesian approa

Occurrence of the bat tick Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) Kelleyi Cooley & Kohls (Acari: Argasidae) in Costa Rica and its relation to human bites.

Several persons from two localities in Costa Rica (San Rafael de Coronado, 1510 m and Dulce Nombre de Tres Ríos, 1445 m) were bitten by ticks, subsequently identified as Ornitohodoros (A.) Kelleyi (Argasidae), commonly associated with bats. In the attics of their homes, live adults, larvae, nymphs and skins were found in the bat guano. Since there are no records of adult argasids in this country, a laboratory colony was established to observe the biology of these ticks and their association with bats. In this particular case, the bats were Molossidae and Vespertilionidae, both insectivorous. A

Genomic Characterization of a Novel Victorivirus Detected in a Sample Derived From a Human-Biting Tick in Japan.

Surveillance of tick-associated viruses may contribute to our understanding of viral diversity and evolution. Here, we identified a novel victorivirus in a sample derived from a human-biting tick, Amblyomma testudinarium, in Japan. The viral sequence was identified by metatranscriptomic sequencing of total RNA extracted from Vero cells treated with tick homogenate. The viral sequence was 4621 bp in length and contained two major open reading frames predicted to encode a putative coat protein (CP) and a putative RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), respectively. The two open reading frames over

Human bite wounds as a portal of entry for infective endocarditis and purulent pericarditis: a very rare association.

Human bites are an infrequent cause of emergency department visits and hospital admissions. There are rarely published cases of complicated infection, such as infective endocarditis. We present a rare case of a patient with acute infective endocarditis in a healthy native valve and purulent pericarditis from a human bite. A 40-year-old man with obesity suffered deep human bites by an adult woman, with two deep lesions in the anterior thorax and one superficial lesion in the upper abdomen and admitted in intensive care unit with septic shock and a persistent aortic murmur. Traumatic complete outer ear amputation by human bite, a forensic case report and review of the literature.

We present a case of a complete external ear amputation, caused by a human bite, that took place during a quarrel in a local farmers' market. The male victim was transferred to the Hospital. After surgical reattachment of the auricle, a forensic clinical examination was performed, as per legal obligation. During examination, the victim was found to have sustained: contusions of the orbital regions (lower eyelids), bilaterally, soft tissue oedema of the forehead (to the left of the middle line), and contusion of the right neck area. He also sustained multiple soft tissue injuries (contusions, a

Approved and novel strategies in diagnostics of rat bite fever and other Streptobacillus infections in humans and animals.

Rat bite fever (RBF), a worldwide occurring and most likely under-diagnosed zoonosis caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis, represents the most prominent disease of Streptobacillus infections. Recently, novel members have been described, from which a reservoir in rats and other animal species and a zoonotic potential can be assumed. Despite regularly published case reports, diagnostics of RBF continues to represent a 'diagnostic dilemma', because the mostly applied 16S rRNA sequence analysis may be uncertain for proper pathogen identification. Virtually nothing is known regarding prevalence i

Low risk of seroconversion or clinical disease in humans after a bite by an Anaplasma phagocytophilum-infected tick.

The risk of contracting human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) after a tick bite is mainly unknown. In this study we investigated the clinical and serological response in 30 humans bitten by ticks positive for Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Group A), 30 humans bitten by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.)-positive ticks (Group B), and 30 humans bitten by ticks negative for both A. phagocytophilum and B. burgdorferi s.l. (Group C). Ticks, blood samples and questionnaires were collected from tick-bitten humans at 34 primary healthcare centres in Sweden and in the Åland Islands, Finland, at the tim

Assessing the risk of human granulocytic anaplasmosis and lyme borreliosis after a tick bite in Bavaria, Germany.

To date, only isolated incidences of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) have been reported in Europe. However, entomological studies in Bavaria, Germany showed a prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum of between 2 and 9.5% in the tick vector Ixodes ricinus. In this study we assessed the risk of pathogenic A. phagocytophilum infection after a tick bite in Bavaria. The seroprevalence of anti-Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) antibodies was investigated as an indicator of past exposure, seroconversion as actual exposure of participants to ticks. Patients with a tick bite in the preceding

Transmission of hepatitis B by human bite--confirmation by detection of virus in saliva and full genome sequencing.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can be detected in saliva of carriers and epidemiological studies suggest human bite as a possible route of transmission. We report a case of acute hepatitis B that developed after an individual with learning difficulty was bitten by a fellow resident in a sheltered accommodation. The attacker was found to be a chronic carrier of HBV and virus was present in his saliva. The HBV in both men had identical genotype and sequence. Future studies are warranted to investigate the role of saliva as a vehicle of HBV transmission in the community.

Human envenomation from the bite of the eastern garter snake, Thamnophis s. sirtalis (Serpentes: Colubridae).

A 13-yr-old victim of a prolonged eastern garter snake (Thamnophis s. sirtalis) bite was hospitalized following development of coolness, edema and ecchymosis of the bitten hand. Although lymphatic involvement was noted, vital signs and laboratory tests were normal and rapid recovery followed. Subsequent asymptomatic Thamnophis bites of the subject indicate that these clinical changes were not allergic. This case from Delaware suggests that widespread toxicity within the genus is likely.

An unusual case: repeated nocturnal biting of a bedridden human by a nymph of Tettigonia viridissima (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae).

Cases of adventitious biting on humans by non-hematophagous insects are rarely reported but hold significant medical relevance. This case report documents the first instance of repeated nocturnal biting in a bedridden, tetraparetic 59-year-old patient by a fifth-instar nymph of the great green bush-cricket, Tettigonia viridissima L. (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae). The patient sustained four superficial skin lesions on the left ear and forehead, accompanied by distinct blood smears. A live T. viridissima nymph was captured at the end of a dark red blood streak nearby. Biting activity was likely an
