The effects of anomalous diffusion on power-law blinking statistics of CdSe nanorods.

In this study of fluorescence blinking statistics for nanorods, we present a diffusion-controlled reaction model that leads to a more general formula: t(-m) exp[-(Gammat)(n)]. This formula describes a short-time power law with a crossover to a stretched exponential decay at later times. Based on quantum Brownian motion for a coupled central harmonic oscillator coupled to heat bath oscillators, we show that the position distribution follows anomalous diffusion with time-dependent diffusion coefficient and drift coefficient. The first and the second moments of the energy fluctuations are shown t

Size effects and breakdown of the power-law blinking statistics of CdSe nanorods.

In this study, the dependence of sample size and light intensity on the fluorescence intermittency of semiconductor nanorods is investigated. We present a model with diffusion-controlled electron-transfer reactions involving anomalous diffusion in energy configuration space. This model leads to a general formula t(-m) exp[-(Gammat)n] for the temporal behavior of blinking statistics, where m and n are related to the time dependence of the spectral diffusion. We reanalyze the experimental data of the long-time bending tail of CdSe nanorods and elucidate the size effects of the bending rates and

Quantitative videographic analysis of blinking in normal subjects and patients with dry eye.

OBJECTIVE: To study patterns of eye blinking in normal subjects and patients with dry eye. METHODS: We developed an automated, noninvasive blink monitor that permits quantitative analysis of 6 parameters of blinking. We used this method under normal conditions and then examined the effects on the patterns of blinking in patients with dry eye; several steps in this method were designed to exacerbate or ameliorate ocular surface desiccation. RESULTS: The mean (+/-SD), maximum, and coefficient of variation of the interblinking time in normal subjects and patients with dry eye were 4.0 +/- 2.0 a

Demographics-robust spontaneous eye blinking slowing in patients with severe acquired brain injury.

This study aimed to explore whether spontaneous eye blinking features from a brief vertical electro-oculogram recording can distinguish patients with severe acquired brain injury from healthy volunteers. Given evidence for shared neurobiological substrates in blinking control and attention, we expected altered blinking features in patients. In this observational cross-sectional study we extracted eye blink rate, amplitude, rise time, fall time, duration, and blink-blink interval variability from electro-oculography in 19 patients with severe acquired brain injury and 21 healthy controls during

Impact of virtual reality headset use on eye blinking and lipid layer thickness.

PURPOSE: Blinking plays an important role in protecting the eyes, and the use of computers has been associated with a reduction in the blink rate. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of a virtual reality headset on blinking and lipid layer thickness and to compare these data to those associated with a conventional desktop monitor. METHODS: Two experiments were performed to compare the effect of 20minutes of use of a virtual reality headset (FOVE) and 20minutes of use of a desktop monitor on the frequency and length of blinks (experiment 1, 15 participants) and on the thickness o

Increasing motorcycles attention and search conspicuity by using Alternating-Blinking Lights System (ABLS).

Poor conspicuity of Powered Two-Wheelers (PTW) is one of the main factors contributing to their involvement in accidents. The current study examined the influence of different rider's outfits on PTWs' detectability, and evaluated the potential of a unique Alternating-Blinking Lights System (ABLS) to increase the rider's conspicuity. This study included two experiments that examined the visual search involved in the process of scanning video clips of dynamic traffic scenes. The first experiment examined PTWs' attention conspicuity, while the second evaluated PTWs' search conspicuity. In the att

The timing and temporal patterns of eye blinking are dynamically modulated by attention.

A number of human behaviors and movements show self-similar temporal patterns in their occurrence over time. Human walking, finger tapping and heartbeat intervals have fluctuations that are statistically similar at multiple time scales. However, whether eye blinking, which is a unique human behavior that occurs spontaneously, embeds a similar temporal structure within other types of movements is largely unknown. In this study, we used attention-requiring tasks to assess how the temporal pattern of eye blinking is altered in both the second and sub-second time scales. Our results showed that ey

Hole surface trapping in CdSe nanocrystals: dynamics, rate fluctuations, and implications for blinking.

Carrier trapping is one of the main sources of performance degradation in nanocrystal-based devices. Yet the dynamics of this process is still unclear. We present a comprehensive investigation into the efficiency of hole transfer to a variety of trap sites located on the surface of the core or the shell or at the core/shell interface in CdSe nanocrystals with both organic and inorganic passivation, using the atomistic semiempirical pseudopotential approach. We separate the contribution of coupling strength and energetics in different systems and trap configurations, obtaining useful general gu

Short-latency prepulse inhibition of the trigeminal blink reflex.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is a well-established phenomenon wherein a weak sensory stimulus attenuates the startle reflex triggered by a subsequent strong stimulus. Within the circuit, variations in target responses observed for PPI paradigms represent prepulse-induced excitability changes. However, little is known about the mechanism of PPI. Here, we focused on short-latency PPI of the trigeminal blink reflex R1 signal with an oligosynaptic reflex arc through the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus and the facial nucleus. As the facial nucleus is facilitatory to any input, R1 PPI is the pheno

Investigating the Blink Reflex Abnormality in Dry Eye Patients.

Introduction Dry eye is an ocular surface disorder caused by increased evaporation, decreased tear production, or mixed form. Tears are secreted by the lacrimal gland after lacrimal nerve stimulation connected to the facial nerve. In nerve damage, tear secretion decreases, and dry eye develops. Our aim is to investigate the presence of pathology in the facial trigeminal nerve and neuronal pathways that provide reflex connections between these nerves by measuring the blink reflex in patients with dry eyes. Methods Schirmer test and tear breakup time were performed. Tear breakup time measurement

Emotional induced attentional blink in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although an attentional bias for threat is implicated in anxiety disorders, such a bias has not been consistently observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This inconsistency is partially due to a paucity of studies employing robust attentional tasks. The emotional attentional blink (EAB), a phenomenon in which the brief appearance of a task-irrelevant, emotionally arousing image captures attention to such an extent that target stimuli cannot be detected, have increasing been employed as more robust tasks of attentional biases. METHODS: In the present study, patients with O

Gone in the blink of an eye - A Tolosa-Hunt syndrome variant.

Tolosa-Hunt syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by severe peri-orbital headache and ophthalmoplegia resulting from pseudotumour in the cavernous sinus compressing structures within it, namely cranial nerves III, IV, and VI and the superior divisions of cranial nerve V. We report the case of a 47 year old female who presented with painless left unilateral ptosis and complete external ophthalmoplegia. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) identified an enhancing heterogeneous mass filling the left cavernous sinus, following the course of the oculomotor nerve. After 2 weeks symptoms and signs re

F wave, A wave, H reflex, and blink reflex.

Late responses include F waves, A waves, H reflex, and the blink reflex. These responses help enhance routine nerve conduction studies. Despite the use of F waves in multiple clinical applications, their studies can technically challenge even the most experienced electromyographers. They vary in latency, amplitude, and configuration, whereas A waves show no change in latency or morphology. Electrical stimulation of the supraorbital branch of the trigeminal nerve on one side results in a reflexive activation of the facial nucleus causing contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle, short latenc
