Patient experience of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency-associated liver disease: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: To elicit the signs and/or symptoms, and impacts on daily living experienced by patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency-associated liver disease (AATD-LD). METHODS: A preliminary "concept list" of signs and/or symptoms, and impacts was developed from a targeted literature review, patient blog posts, and clinician interviews. Subsequently, one-to-one concept elicitation interviews involving English-speaking, US adults with AATD-LD and a protease inhibitor (Pi) ZZ or MZ genotype were conducted by trained interviewers following a central Institutional Review Board-approved discussi

Preparing occupational therapy students for practice in rural areas: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Despite greater needs in rural areas, occupational therapists are maldistributed to urban spaces which limits service access and health outcomes for rural people and communities. Preparation of students for rural practice may improve rural workforce recruitment and retention; however, the range and scope of preparation strategies employed by education providers are unclear. This scoping review aims to understand and describe the range of strategies education services use to prepare occupational therapy students for rural practice across the globe. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study

Social Media in the Diabetes Community: a Novel Way to Assess Psychosocial Needs in People with Diabetes and Their Caregivers.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Diabetes is a chronic disease that, regardless of type, requires intensive, ongoing self-management. As a result, people with diabetes (PWD) often have complex environmental, social, behavioral, and informational needs, many of which are unmet in healthcare settings and systems. To help meet these needs, many PWD interact with diabetes online communities (DOCs), including platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogs, to share real-life support, problems, and concerns with other PWD, offering a rich source of data on patient-reported outcomes. This article reviews recent ps

Quality Information about Uterine Fibroids on the Internet.

OBJECTIVE: There are no published studies analyzing the quality of the information for lay women on the Internet regarding uterine fibroids. The accuracy of the provided material is also unknown. Thus, we have performed a cross-sectional study with 381 websites in the English and Brazilian Portuguese languages between May and December 2017. METHODS: Two investigators performed the analysis, and the Cohen kappa coefficient was calculated to analyze the agreement between them. Search terms (uterine fibroids and derivatives) in the English and Brazilian Portuguese languages were used. The accura

Waking up every day in a body that is not yours: a qualitative research inquiry into the intersection between eating disorders and pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Women with eating disorders are more likely to negatively react to finding out they are pregnant, although this difference in attitudes between women with eating disorders and controls disappears at 18-weeks' gestation. Those with anorexia also are twice as likely to have an unplanned pregnancy and those with bulimia have a 30-fold increased chance compared with healthy controls. Therefore, due to these considerations, pregnancy and the transition to motherhood can be an extremely challenging time for these women both psychologically and physically. The purpose of this qualitative

Impact of a 3-Month Anti-inflammatory Dietary Intervention Focusing on Watermelon on Body Habitus, Inflammation, and Metabolic Markers: A Pilot Study.

An anti-inflammatory dietary intervention called the Inflammation Management Intervention (IMAGINE) was adapted to emphasize watermelon due to its anti-inflammatory properties. This pilot study (n = 23) tested the effect of a watermelon-enhanced IMAGINE intervention (n = 15) on body habitus and markers of inflammation and metabolism. This 3-month self-selection trial, consisting of weekly in-person classes and online education for 12 weeks, focused on incorporating watermelon into an already anti-inflammatory diet. Controls (n = 8) received basic health education via email and blogs. Measureme

Social media for arthritis-related comparative effectiveness and safety research and the impact of direct-to-consumer advertising.

BACKGROUND: Social media may complement traditional data sources to answer comparative effectiveness/safety questions after medication licensure. METHODS: The Treato platform was used to analyze all publicly available social media data including Facebook, blogs, and discussion boards for posts mentioning inflammatory arthritis (e.g. rheumatoid, psoriatic). Safety events were self-reported by patients and mapped to medical ontologies, resolving synonyms. Disease and symptom-related treatment indications were manually redacted. The units of analysis were unique terms in posts. Pre-specified con

Development and application of a Chinese webpage suicide information mining system (sims).

OBJECTIVES: This study aims at designing and piloting a convenient Chinese webpage suicide information mining system (SIMS) to help search and filter required data from the internet and discover potential features and trends of suicide. METHODS: SIMS utilizes Microsoft Visual Studio2008, SQL2008 and C# as development tools. It collects webpage data via popular search engines; cleans the data using trained models plus minimum manual help; translates the cleaned texts into quantitative data through models and supervised fuzzy recognition; analyzes and visualizes related variables by self-progra

A call for a trauma-informed approach during compulsory care for enduring anorexia nervosa with combined PTSD - an autoethnographic perspective.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with both anorexia nervosa (AN) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often experience significant challenges in psychiatric inpatient care, particularly when coercive measures are used. While the comorbidity of AN and PTSD is well-documented, their interplay in the context of compulsory care and from a lived experience and trauma-informed perspective remains underexplored, despite its critical impact on treatment outcomes. This autoethnographic study aims to shed light on how coercion is experienced in this context, highlighting the need for a trauma-informed appro

Eliciting gastric cancer survivors' preferences for follow-up services: a discrete choice experiment protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Follow-up care is important for gastric cancer survivors, but follow-up strategies for gastric cancer survivors remain inconsistent, and compliance of gastric cancer survivors with follow-up care is very low. Understanding the needs and preferences of gastric cancer survivors is conducive to developing appropriate and acceptable follow-up strategies, thereby improving patient compliance. Discrete choice experiments can quantify individual needs and preferences. However, to date, there is no discrete choice experiment on the preferences of gastric cancer survivors, and no studies

Reproductive health status and related knowledge among women aged 20-39 years in rural China: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive health is the core science of human life and is critical to the healthy and sustainable development of human society. Since 1980, China has enforced a "one child" policy. With the implementation of the Universal Two-Child Policy in 2016, every couple is allowed to have two children instead of one, which will lead to more pregnancies, births, and advanced maternal age. Thus, women aged 20-39 years, at the peak of sexual activity and fertility, will face more reproductive health problems related to pregnancies and births. This study aimed to investigate the current repro
