Auto-brewery syndrome: Ethanol pseudo-toxicity in diabetic and hepatic patients.

Endogenous alcohol has been applied for spontaneous ethanol production via different metabolic pathways of the human body. Auto-brewery syndrome describes the patients with alcohol intoxication after ingesting carbohydrate-rich meals. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of diabetes mellitus (DM), liver cirrhosis (LC) and presence of both (DM and LC) on blood alcohol concentration (BAC) especially after carbohydrate ingestion. BAC has been measured by headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in three groups of humans namely control, DM, LC and both (DM and LC) gr

Short-term changes in nightlife attendance and patron intoxication following alcohol restrictions in Queensland, Australia.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore short-term changes following the introduction of alcohol restrictions (most notably 2 am to 3 am last drinks). We examined patterns of nightlife attendance, intoxication, and alcohol use among patrons shortly before and after restrictions were introduced in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane: the largest night-time entertainment precinct of Queensland. METHODS: Street-intercept patron interviews were conducted in Fortitude Valley in June (n = 497) and July (n = 562) 2016. A pre-post design was used to assess changes in time spent out drinking/partying prior to t

Alcohol Intoxication Is Associated With Bladder Injury and Bladder Surgical Repair in Patients Sustaining Motor Vehicle Collisions.

PURPOSE: Alcohol intoxication is a known risk factor for motor vehicle collisions. We hypothesize ethanol intoxication increases the risk of bladder injury and surgical repair, especially at higher blood alcohol content levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified all patients involved in motor vehicle collisions from the National Trauma Data Bank from 2017-2019. Patients were categorized into an intoxication and intoxication negative group. Variables collected included age, sex, blood alcohol content level, driver status, seat belt restraint use, nonalcoholic intoxication, pelvic fracture, a

Trauma center admission risk conditions and the probability for developing alcohol withdrawal syndrome: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Because the proportion of trauma patients developing alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is low, AWS risk conditions have not been precisely delineated. We aimed to create multifactor screening strategies to assess probabilities for the likelihood of developing AWS. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 1,011 trauma patients admitted to a Level I trauma center to investigate the associations between AWS and probable AWS risk conditions. Included patients were adults who met trauma registry inclusion criteria and had blood alcohol concentration (BAC) testing performed

Drinking and driving relapse: Data from BAC and MMPI-2.

Road traffic injuries are the ninth cause of death across all age groups, globally (WHO, 2015). Many road traffic crashes are caused by Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol by persons who have previously had their license suspended for the same reason. The aim of this study was to identify specific risk factors and personality characteristics in repeat offenders. The sample was comprised of 260 subjects who were not repeat DUI offenders (DUI-NR), but had a single license suspension between 2010 and 2011; and 97 repeat offenders who received at least two DUI convictions within a period

The dose-response effects of alcohol on positive and depressed affect in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) commonly co-occur; those with MDD tend to drink more heavily than others. Efforts to regulate mood in MDD may underlie the predisposition for AUD in this population, and mood regulation may require higher alcohol doses. However, the specific aspects of affect impacted by orally-administered alcohol at different doses and timepoints along the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) curve remain unclear among those with MDD. Affect consists of two independent dimensions-positive and negative (including depressed) affect-with MDD involving

Direct Estimation of Alcohol-Attributable Fractions for Suicide in the United States, 2021.

Objectives. To estimate the alcohol-attributable fraction (AAF) for suicide in the United States. Methods. Using restricted-access data from the National Violent Death Reporting System for 2021, we estimated the sex-specific AAF for suicide, among those 15 years of age and older, by sociodemographic characteristics and suicide means. An alcohol-attributable suicide was defined as that for which the decedent had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.10 grams per deciliter or higher. Results. In 2021, the AAF for suicide for males (20.2%) was significantly higher than that for females (17.8%; P < .

Mechanical and Heat Hyperalgesia upon Withdrawal From Chronic Intermittent Ethanol Vapor Depends on Sex, Exposure Duration, and Blood Alcohol Concentration in Mice.

Approximately half of patients with alcohol use disorder report pain and this can be severe during withdrawal. Many questions remain regarding the importance of biological sex, alcohol exposure paradigm, and stimulus modality to the severity of alcohol withdrawal-induced hyperalgesia. To examine the impact of sex and blood alcohol concentration on the time course of the development of mechanical and heat hyperalgesia, we characterized a mouse model of chronic alcohol withdrawal-induced pain in the presence or absence the alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitor, pyrazole. Male and female C57BL/6J mice

Rat Model of Late Gestational Alcohol Exposure Produces Similar Life-Long Changes in Thalamic Nucleus Reuniens Following Moderate- Versus High-Dose Insult.

AIMS: Recent studies have recognized that thalamic nucleus reuniens (Re) undergoes substantial neuron loss following alcohol exposure (AE) during the brain growth spurt (BGS). As all previous studies have utilized high-dose AE paradigms, we tested whether moderate-dose AE is capable of damaging Re to a similar degree as high-dose AE. METHODS: We used a rat model of third-trimester binge AE (relative to human pregnancy) to administer ethanol to rat pups at either a high (5.25 g/kg/day) or moderate (3.00 g/kg/day) dose during the BGS (postnatal days [PD] 4-9) via intragastric intubation. Evaluation of N-acetyltaurine as an ethanol marker in human blood.

To investigate the potential of N-acetyltaurine (NAcT) in blood as a biomarker for alcohol uptake, a previously published LC-MS/MS method for urine was modified to simultaneously detect NAcT and ethyl glucuronide (EtG). The method was applied in a drinking study and by analyzing 147 forensic case samples. In the drinking study, contrary to EtG, NAcT proved to be an endogenous substance, which was present at 22 ± 7 ng/mL (13-31 ng/mL) in the blood after 2 weeks of abstinence. A moderate increase in NAcT to 40 ± 10 ng/mL (27-57 ng/mL) was observed after drinking. Within 24 h, the NAcT concentrat

Self-underestimation of BAC as a predictor of risky driving in heavy drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related driving fatalities persist as a public health issue in the United States. Recent studies have focused on the role of driver risk-taking in DUI occurrences and consequent driving fatalities. This laboratory study examined simulated driver risk-taking under an acute dose of alcohol and a placebo to test the degree to which individual differences in risk-taking were predicted by drivers' self-appraisal of their intoxication and the degree to which alcohol impaired their inhibitory control. METHODS: Eighty young adult drivers (41 men and 39 women) received 0.65g/kg alc

Impact of mental resilience and perceived immune functioning on the severity of alcohol hangover.

OBJECTIVE: Recent research comparing hangover sensitive drinkers with hangover resistant drinkers has revealed that experiencing alcohol hangovers is associated with significantly poorer self-reported immune functioning (p < 0.0001). No significant difference between the groups was found on mental resilience. The objective of the current survey was to examine the association between hangover severity, perceived immune status, and mental resilience. N = 341 Dutch students, all hangover sensitive drinkers, completed an online survey. The Brief Resilience Scale was completed, and perceived immune

Elevated blood-ethanol concentration promotes reduction of aliphatic ketones (acetone and ethyl methyl ketone) to secondary alcohols along with slower oxidation to aliphatic diols.

Many people convicted for drunken driving suffer from an alcohol use disorder and some traffic offenders consume denatured alcohol for intoxication purposes. Venous blood samples from people arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol were analyzed in triplicate by headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) using three different stationary phases. The gas chromatograms from this analysis sometimes showed peaks with retention times corresponding to acetone, ethyl methyl ketone (2-butanone), 2-propanol, and 2-butanol in addition to ethanol and the internal standard (1-propanol). The Spectrum of Alcohol Use: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment.

In the United States, alcohol is the most common substance used and the spectrum of unhealthy alcohol use is highly prevalent. Complications of unhealthy alcohol use affect nearly every organ system. One of the most frequent and potentially life-threatening of these complications is alcohol withdrawal syndrome for which benzodiazepines remain first-line therapy. Pharmacologic treatment of alcohol use disorder, the most severe form of unhealthy alcohol use, is underutilized despite the availability of multiple effective medications. Although behavioral therapies are an important component of tr

Concentration units used to report blood- and breath-alcohol concentration for legal purposes differ between countries which is important to consider when blood/breath ratios of alcohol are compared and contrasted.

This technical note reviews the plethora of concentration units used to report blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) and breath-alcohol concentrations (BrAC) for legal purposes in different countries. The choice of units sometimes causes confusion when scientific papers originating from a certain country might be introduced into evidence via expert testimony, such as when alcohol-related crimes are prosecuted. The concentration units are also important to consider when blood/breath ratios (BBRs) of alcohol are calculated and compared between countries. Statutory BAC limits for driving in most nati
