Relationship of body size to metabolic markers and left ventricular hypertrophy in cats.

BACKGROUND: Cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are larger and have higher insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations than cats without HCM. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess echocardiographic findings in a colony of adult cats to determine the relationship between early growth and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). ANIMALS: Twenty-eight neutered adult cats (20 males, 8 females) from a colony ≥ 3 years of age for which growth curves were available. METHODS: Case-control study. Physical examination and echocardiography were performed, and body weigh

Effects of body size on the diurnal activity budgets of African browsing ruminants.

We compared the diurnal activity budgets of four syntopic species of African browsing ruminant that differ widely in body size. These were concurrently studied through all phases of the seasonal cycle, in the same area, using the same methods. We tested five predictions from the literature on how body size is expected to influence the behaviour of tropical ungulates: the smallest members of the browsing ruminant guild exhibit (1) the lowest allocation of diurnal time to activity; (2) the greatest hour-to-hour variation in activity and resting time; (3) the greatest reduction in activity time d

Body size at birth and adulthood and the risk for germ-cell testicular cancer.

To assess the association between adult body size and germ-cell testicular cancer risk and to understand whether this association is independent from perinatal characteristics, a nested case-control study was conducted. Three hundred and seventy-one patients with testicular cancer, registered in the Swedish Cancer Registry between 1958 and 1996 and aged 20-54 years at diagnosis, and 1238 individually matched controls were identified. Information on adult body size at age 18 years was obtained for all subjects through the Military Service Conscription Register, whereas perinatal information was

Relation of childhood diet and body size to menarche and adolescent growth in girls.

Adolescent growth and development may be affected by factors such as dietary intake and body size from much earlier in childhood. In a longitudinal study of 67 Caucasian girls in Boston, Massachusetts, data were collected prospectively from birth during the 1930s and 1940s. Heights and weights were measured semiannually, and dietary history interviews were conducted with mothers. Stepwise linear regression methods were used to seek factors which best predicted age at menarche, adolescent peak height growth velocity, and the age at which peak growth velocity occurred. Girls who consumed more (e

Effects of body size on take-off flight performance in the Phasianidae (Aves).

To evaluate the mechanisms responsible for relationships between body mass and maximum take-off performance in birds, we studied four species in the Phasianidae: northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus), chukar (Alectoris chukar), ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) and wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo). These species vary in body mass from 0.2 to 5.3 kg, and they use flight almost solely to escape predators. During take-off, all the species used a similar wingbeat style that appeared to be a vortex-ring gait with a tip reversal during the upstroke. The tip reversal is unusual for birds

Body size as a factor in different ages and breast cancer risk in Taiwan.

A matched case-control study was done on 175 pathologically proven new cases of female breast cancer from National Taiwan University Hospital from February 1993 to June 1994 and 457 hospital controls individually matched for age and date of admission. Height and weight during one year before the first full-term pregnancy and one year before admission were collected from a questionnaire interview. Body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2) was derived accordingly. Demographic and reproductive characteristics, and family history of breast cancer were collected and adjusted as potential confounders. Condition

Size of the carotid body and ventilatory responses to hypoxia in genetically hypertensive rats.

Structural and functional abnormalities of peripheral chemoreceptors have been found in association with hypertension in both man and rat. In New Zealand (NZ), Kyoto and Milan hypertensive (HT) rats carotid body volume was similar in HT and normotensive (NT) individuals of the same original genetic stock. Arteries within the carotid body showed changes typical of hypertension. Under anaesthesia, NZ HT rats had higher PaO2, lower PaCO2 tensions than NT rats; ventilation/100 g body weight was higher in the HT than NT rats over a wide range of inspired O2 tensions. Thus in HT rats we found eviden

A maternal effect shapes early-life adaptive body size variation in house mice.

UNLABELLED: Almost all phenotypic variation is mediated by a combination of genetic and environmental effects. Importantly, the balance of these effects can fluctuate over an organism's lifespan, with the maternal environment being particularly important during early life, especially in mammals. Using house mice as a model, we combine behavioral, molecular, and quantitative genetic approaches to understand how genetic and maternal variation together shape phenotypic divergence in a classic example of morphological adaptation. Temperate house mice are larger than tropical house mice, conforming

Body size shapes average behaviour, social impact, and social responsiveness in agonistic interactions.

Social interactions shape behavioural phenotypes and fitness, and are therefore major drivers of evolution. However, the precise mechanisms through which behavioural dynamics mediate the evolutionary consequences of social interactions remain poorly understood. Plastic responses during social interactions ("social plasticity") arise through two causal pathways: individuals can elicit phenotypic change in their social partners ("social impact") and individuals can adjust their own phenotype to the phenotypes of others ("social responsiveness"). Crucially, functional links among average behaviou

Large-for-size syndrome prophylaxis in infant liver recipients with low body mass.

Transplantation of the left lateral section (LLS) of the liver is now an established practice for treating advanced diffuse and unresectable focal liver diseases in children, with variants of the LLS primarily used in infants. However, the surgical challenge of matching the size of an adult donor's graft to the volume of a child's abdomen remains significant. This review explores historical developments, various approaches to measuring the required functional liver mass, and techniques to prevent complications associated with large-for-size grafts in infants.

Volumetric graft changes after liver transplantation: evidence of adaptation to recipient body size.

It is believed that whole liver grafts adjust their size to fit the body size of the recipient after transplantation, despite a lack of evidence. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis. This was a retrospective cohort study of 113 liver transplantations performed at Karolinska University Hospital. The cohort was divided based on graft volume-to-standard liver volume ratio (GV/SLV) into quartiles of small, mid, and large grafts. Serial volumetric assessment was performed on the day of transplantation and at posttransplant check-ups early (<2 mo) and late (9-13 mo) after transplantati

Does body size impact muscle recruitment during law enforcement physical control simulator use?

This study examined muscle activation during the 'push-pull' component of law enforcement physical abilities testing and assessed activation differences based on sex, height, and body mass index. Fifty participants (40 male) completed the 'push-pull' task while surface electromyograms were recorded from ten upper and lower extremity muscles, and six trunk muscles. Muscle activation was amplitude-normalized to maximum voluntary isometric contraction and compared between sexes and tertiles of height and body mass index (BMI). Women had significantly higher activation of anterior deltoid and pect

Crocodylian Head Width Allometry and Phylogenetic Prediction of Body Size in Extinct Crocodyliforms.

Body size and body-size shifts broadly impact life-history parameters of all animals, which has made accurate body-size estimates for extinct taxa an important component of understanding their paleobiology. Among extinct crocodylians and their precursors (e.g., suchians), several methods have been developed to predict body size from suites of hard-tissue proxies. Nevertheless, many have limited applications due to the disparity of some major suchian groups and biases in the fossil record. Here, we test the utility of head width (HW) as a broadly applicable body-size estimator in living and fos

Temporal regulation of Lin28a during mammalian neurulation contributes to neonatal body size control.

BACKGROUND: The timing of developmental events is tightly regulated along a time axis for normal development. Although the RNA-binding protein Lin28a plays a crucial role in the regulation of developmental timing in Caenorhabditis elegans, how the timing of Lin28a expression affects the rate and/or duration of developmental events during mammalian development remains to be addressed. RESULTS: In this study, we discovered that the timing and the duration of Lin28a expression affect embryonic growth. During the neurulation stage of mouse development, endogenous Lin28a levels start to drop. When

Muscle size, quality, and body composition: characteristics of division I cross-country runners.

The primary purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between muscle cross-sectional area (mCSA), echo intensity (EI), and body composition of Division I cross-country runners. The secondary purpose was to examine differences in these variables in athletes stratified based on stress-fracture (SFx) history. Thirty-six athletes were stratified based on sex and SFx history. A panoramic scan vastus lateralis was performed using a GE Logiq-e B-mode ultrasound. Echo intensity and mCSA were determined from the scan using a grayscale imaging software (ImageJ). Body composition measures we

Fetal growth and body size genes and risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Accumulating evidence suggests that childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) may be initiated in utero or early in the postnatal period. High birth weight (or rapid fetal growth) is associated with risk of ALL, but the mechanisms are not understood. In a population-based epidemiologic study of childhood ALL, we utilized a haplotype-based approach to assess the role of eight genes involved in fetal growth and body size regulation in 377 childhood ALL cases and 448 controls. We found significant haplotype associations with risk of childhood ALL for IGF1 among non-Hispanics and Hispanics toge

Body size across the life course, mammographic density, and risk of breast cancer.

Adult body mass index (BMI) is inversely associated with premenopausal breast cancer risk, and childhood and adolescent body size is inversely associated with breast cancer risk in pre- and postmenopausal women. Breast density is inversely related to body size and may play a role in the association of body size with breast cancer risk. The authors conducted a nested case-control study including 1,528 cases and 2,844 controls from the Nurses' Health Study (1989-2004) and Nurses' Health Study II (1996-2003). Prior to breast cancer diagnosis, participants reported their body fatness during childh

Medical history, body size, and cigarette smoking in relation to fatal prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Prostate cancer has few known risk factors. As part of a population-based case-control study conducted in four health maintenance organizations, the authors examined the associations between fatal prostate cancer and several medical and behavioral characteristics. METHODS: Cases were 768 health plan members who died of prostate adenocarcinoma during the period 1997-2001. We randomly selected controls (929) from the health plan membership and matched them to cases on health plan, age, race, and pattern of health plan membership. We examined medical records to obtain information on

Age-dependent mating dynamics, body size, and sex ratio in colonised Anopheles coluzzii.

Malaria is a serious life-threatening disease transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. Knowledge of physiological parameters associated with mosquito fitness is essential to understand mating dynamics, population structure, and the effectiveness of vector control interventions. This study investigated key biological parameters, including body size and insemination rate in relation to adult age, as well as sex ratio, in a laboratory-reared Anopheles coluzzii colony. A total of 1526 female mosquitoes were dissected, of which 1494 were included in the analysis; a significant non-linear relationship w

Ascending Aortic Dimensions and Body Size: Allometric Scaling, Normative Values, and Prognostic Performance.

BACKGROUND: Ascending aortic (AscAo) dimensions partially depend on body size. Ratiometric (linear) indexing of AscAo dimensions to height and body surface area (BSA) are currently recommended, but it is unclear whether these allometric relationships are indeed linear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate allometric relations, normative values, and the prognostic performance of AscAo dimension indices. METHODS: The authors studied UK Biobank (UKB) (n = 49,271) and Penn Medicine BioBank (PMBB) (n = 8,426) participants. A convolutional neural network was used to segment the thoracic aorta
