Preoperative Main Pulmonary Artery Diameter Indexed to Body Surface Area Independently Predicts Mortality After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation in a Chinese Population.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) commonly accompanies severe aortic stenosis and adversely affects outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). However, the prognostic value of computed tomography-derived pulmonary artery remodeling, particularly the main pulmonary artery diameter (mPAD) indexed to body surface area (mPAD/BSA), remains uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prognostic significance of mPAD/BSA in patients with severe aortic stenosis and concomitant PH undergoing TAVI. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 122 consecutive patients unde

Quality of Life Assessment 4 Years after a More than 90% Total Body Surface Area in 2 Survivors with Burns: Case Report.

There are few reports in the literature detailing the quality of life (QOL) of survivors with greater than 90% total body surface area burns. The objective was to assess 2 such individuals seen at our center with the Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief (BSHS-B) survey 4 years after discharge. Subject responses were categorized into their respective BSHS-B health domains (heat sensitivity, affect, hand function, treatment regimens, work, sexuality, interpersonal relationships, simple abilities, and body image), and a raw score was calculated for each domain. Lower scores indicated a greater percei

Cutaneous functional units (CFUs) versus total body surface area burned (TBSA) for predicting range of motion outcomes: A comparison of predictive models.

INTRODUCTION: Motion-limiting scar contractures are a common and functionally impactful complication after burn injury, but predicting their development remains difficult. While total body surface area (TBSA) burned is a standard metric for burn extent and severity, it does not consider burn location, an important factor impacting joint-level motion. Cutaneous functional units (CFUs) offer a more location-specific and functionally relevant assessment of burn injury characteristics, yet their predictive value for motion outcomes remains underexplored. This study validated clinical prediction mo

Baseline Body Surface Area and Itch Severity Define Response to Baricitinib in Patients with Moderate-to-Severe Atopic Dermatitis at Week 16.

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by heterogeneous clinical phenotypes and high symptom burden, especially through itch. Baricitinib (BARI), an oral Janus Kinase 1/2 inhibitor, is approved in Europe, Japan, and other countries, for treatment of adults with moderate-to-severe AD who are candidates for systemic therapy. This post hoc analysis of a Phase 3 topical corticosteroid (TCS) combination therapy trial (BREEZE-AD7) aims to characterize patients who might benefit most from BARI. METHOD: Classification and regression tree (CART) anal

Gill surface area allometry does not constrain the body mass scaling of maximum oxygen uptake rate in the tidepool sculpin, Oligocottus maculosus.

The gill oxygen limitation hypothesis (GOLH) suggests that hypometric scaling of metabolic rate in fishes is a consequence of oxygen supply constraints imposed by the mismatched growth rates of gill surface area (a two-dimensional surface) and body mass (a three-dimensional volume). GOLH may, therefore, explain the size-dependent spatial distribution of fish in temperature- and oxygen-variable environments through size-dependent respiratory capacity, but this question is unstudied. We tested GOLH in the tidepool sculpin, Oligocottus maculosus, a species in which body mass decreases with increa

A significant correlation between body surface area and infrarenal aortic diameter is detected in a large screening population with possibly clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in elderly men reduces aneurysm related mortality. AAA is commonly defined as an infrarenal aortic diameter (IAD) of ≥30 mm, which is based on the definition of an arterial aneurysm as a focal dilation of 150% or more compared to the expected diameter of about 20 mm. The IAD has been shown to correlate to body surface area (BSA). The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility to use an individualized AAA-criteria by using a BSA-based model to refine the screening for AAA. METHODS: We conducted an observational single center c

Cardiac troponin I release after transcatheter atrial septal defect closure correlated with the ratio of the occluder size to body surface area.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a very specific and sensitive marker of myocardial injury. The degree of myocardial injury associated with transcatheter atrial septal defect (ASD) closure in children is unknown. METHODS: In a longitudinal study on children with ASD, cTnI serum concentrations were measured after transcatheter ASD closure. Implantation success, complications, and latest patient follow-up were described. RESULTS: We inserted 73 Amplatzer septal occluders in 73 patients. Of these, we excluded two patients in whom the device embolized to the right ventricle the day after

The optimal oesophageal pacing technique--the importance of body position, interelectrode spacing, electrode surface area, pacing waveform and intra-oesophageal local anaesthesia.

In order to improve the technique of transoesophageal atrial stimulation (TAS), the effects of body position, interelectrode spacing and electrode surface area on pacing threshold were assessed in two substudies. The effects of intra-oesophageal local anaesthesia and of two different pacing wave configurations on pacing threshold and discomfort were also assessed. Substudy I comprised 16 subjects (3 patients with a history of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia and 13 healthy volunteers) and substudy II comprised 16 healthy volunteers. TAS was performed using a hexapolar luminal prototype

Prediction of Male Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Outcomes Using Body Surface Area Weighted Left Ventricular End-diastolic Diameter: Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The presence of a high left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) has been linked to a less favorable outcome in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures. However, by taking into consideration the reference of left ventricular size and volume measurements relative to the patient's body surface area (BSA), it has been suggested that the accuracy of the predicting outcomes may be improved. OBJECTIVE: We propose that BSA weighted LVEDD (bLVEDD) is a more accurate predictor of outcomes in patients undergoing CABG compared to simply using LVEDD alone.

Neglected Very Long-Chain Hydrocarbons and the Incorporation of Body Surface Area Metrics Reveal Novel Perspectives for Cuticular Profile Analysis in Insects.

Most of our knowledge on insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) stems from analytical techniques based on gas-chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). However, this method has its limits under standard conditions, particularly in detecting compounds beyond a chain length of around C40. Here, we compare the CHC chain length range detectable by GC-MS with the range assessed by silver-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (Ag-LDI-MS), a novel and rarely applied technique on insect CHCs, in seven species of the order Blattodea. For all tested species, we unveiled a con

Body surface area is a novel predictor for surgical complications following video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for lung adenocarcinoma: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Body surface area (BSA) is a biometric unit to measure the body size. Its clinical significance in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) was rarely understood. We aimed to estimate the predictive value of BSA for surgical complications following VATS anatomical resections for lung adenocarcinoma (LAC). METHODS: A single-center retrospective analysis was performed on the consecutive patients between July 2014 and January 2016 in our institution. The differences in mean BSA values were evaluated between groups of patients classified by the development of postoperative surgical

Distribution of Buruli ulcer lesions over body surface area in a large case series in Ghana: uncovering clues for mode of transmission.

We studied hospital records of 750 consecutive Buruli ulcer patients in a highly endemic area in Amansie West, Ghana. Although more Buruli ulcer lesions were found on the right side of the body, comparison of lesions on arms and legs showed a bilaterally symmetrical distribution. Upper and lower extremities were affected equally by Buruli ulcers, if correction was made for differences in body surface area. Patients from outside the Amansie West district presented significantly more often with ulcerated lesions, which were more often located on a joint, than patients who lived in Amansie West,

Body Composition and Dose-limiting Toxicity in Colorectal Cancer Chemotherapy Treatment; a Systematic Review of the Literature. Could Muscle Mass be the New Body Surface Area in Chemotherapy Dosing?

Chemotherapy dosing is traditionally based on body surface area calculations; however, these calculations ignore separate tissue compartments, such as the lean body mass (LBM), which is considered a big pool of drug distribution. In our era, colorectal cancer patients undergo a plethora of computed tomography scans as part of their diagnosis, staging and monitoring, which could easily be used for body composition analysis and LBM calculation, allowing for personalised chemotherapy dosing. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of muscle mass on dose-limiting toxicity (DLT), among d

Recurrent Dystrophic Calcification and Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a Cultured Keratinocyte Scar 35 Years After a 60% Total Body Surface Area Flame Burn.

Dystrophic calcification of burn scars is a rare but disabling late complication that can result in chronic ulceration and increase the risk of squamous cell carcinoma. A male patient sustained burns covering 60% of his total body surface in 1989 and received a combination of split-thickness autografts, paternal homografts, and cultured keratinocyte sheet grafts. The first ulcer appeared in 2004 and recurrent lower limbs ulcerations continued intermittently over the following 2 decades. Imaging and histopathology revealed subcutaneous calcium deposits and 3 distinct well-differentiated squamou

Skin rash induced by apalutamide correlated with age and relative dose intensity adjusted by body surface area in Japanese patients with prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Common adverse events associated with apalutamide include skin rashes and occur more frequently in Japanese patients. This study used relative dose intensity (RDI) and body surface area (BSA) to investigate the risk of skin adverse events and the efficacy of apalutamide in patients with prostate cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from 63 patients with prostate cancer who were treated with an initial dose of 240 mg apalutamide, and RDI (%) was calculated. Patient backgrounds were compared, and factors contributing to rash development were analyzed. Progression-free su

Body Surface Area-Based Dosing of Infliximab is Superior to Standard Weight-Based Dosing in Children With Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Children with very early onset inflammatory bowel disease (VEO-IBD) are uniquely at risk of inadequate infliximab (IFX) exposure. We studied the association between standard body weight (BW)-based and body surface area (BSA)-based dosing strategies and outcomes. METHODS: We identified VEO-IBD patients treated with IFX before 9 years at a single center. Patients were separated into those that received a BSA-based dose (200 mg/m2) and standard BW dosing (5 mg/kg). IFX drug levels, dose intensification, time on steroids, and long-term outcomes were compared. Receiver operato

Evaluation of body surface area formulae for scaling GFR of adult renal patients: more between-subject variability explained by the DuBois & DuBois formula.

BACKGROUND: Scaling glomerular filtration rate (GFR) to body surface area (BSA) has been widely accepted, and was debated in recent years. Although the indexation ability of BSA is inferior to other physiological variables, the evaluation of BSA formulae is still meaningful to clinical practice. In this study, to evaluate the indexation ability of BSA formulae, the repeated measures analyses of camera-based scintigraphy (Gates method, gGFR) and plasma-based clearance (pGFR) were used to specially focus on the between-subject variability that tried to be minimized by GFR normalization. METHODS
