Plasmapheresis in Low Body Weight Infant With Acute Liver Failure.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is an established treatment modality in the management of acute liver failure, with evidence from multicenter randomized controlled trials demonstrating improved overall survival in affected patients. In this setting, massive hepatic necrosis, release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and the onset of multi-organ failure driven by a systemic inflammatory response all contribute significantly to mortality. TPE offers potential benefits through the removal of circulating cytokines and toxins, alongside the replacement of critical plasma proteins, including coagulat

Lymphocyte Antigen 6G Mediates Vagotomy-Associated Reduction in Body Weight.

Dysregulation of adipocyte function is an important component of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. It is increasingly evident that interorgan neuroimmune crosstalk in adipose tissue maintains adipose tissue functionality, yet the molecular mechanisms are incompletely understood. The vagus nerve regulates numerous physiological functions, including inflammation and weight control, even in tissues lacking direct cholinergic innervation. In this study, we examined whether vagal signaling is involved in maintaining baseline homeostasis in epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) by investigatin

Lens-induced myopization and body weight in young guinea pigs.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the relationship between body weight and Axial length in guinea pigs. METHODS: Forty pigmented guinea pigs were randomly divided into two groups, namely control group and negative lens-induced myopization (LIM) group. After measuring the baseline axial length and body weight (BW), guinea pigs of LIM group received bilateral negative lens-induced myopization using - 10.0 diopters lenses. One week later, the lenses were removed and biometric and ophthalmoscopic examinations were repeated. RESULTS: Two groups of guinea pigs showed no statistical difference in initial

The effects of graduated driver licensing on teenage body weight.

The graduated driver licensing (GDL) program requires teenage drivers to pass through an intermediate stage, which contains specific driving restrictions such as a night curfew or a limit on the number of teen passengers to be carried, before earning full driving privileges. Using individual data from the 1999 to 2017 biennial Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBS) combined with state-level GDL policy variations, we estimate the effects of GDL on teenage body weight in the United States. We find that the presence of GDL raises adolescents' body mass index Z-score and their likelihood o

Body weight management in overweight and obese breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that overweight and obese breast cancer survivors are at increased risk of cancer recurrence and have higher all-cause mortality. Obesity has an impact on breast cancer survivor's quality of life (QOL) and increases the risk of longer-term morbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Many cancer guidelines recommend survivors maintain a healthy weight but there is a lack of evidence regarding which weight loss method to recommend. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of different body weight loss approaches in breast cancer survivors who ar

Sleeve gastrectomy rapidly enhances islet function independently of body weight.

Bariatric surgeries including vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) ameliorate obesity and diabetes. Weight loss and accompanying increases to insulin sensitivity contribute to improved glycemia after surgery; however, studies in humans also suggest weight-independent actions of bariatric procedures to lower blood glucose, possibly by improving insulin secretion. To evaluate this hypothesis, we compared VSG-operated mice with pair-fed, sham-surgical controls (PF-Sham) 2 weeks after surgery. This paradigm yielded similar postoperative body weight and insulin sensitivity between VSG and calorically

Obesity, body weight regulation and the brain: insights from fMRI.

Obesity constitutes a major global health threat. Despite the success of bariatric surgery in delivering sustainable weight loss and improvement in obesity-related morbidity, effective non-surgical treatments are urgently needed, necessitating an increased understanding of body weight regulation. Neuroimaging studies undertaken in people with healthy weight, overweight, obesity and following bariatric surgery have contributed to identifying the neurophysiological changes seen in obesity and help increase our understanding of the mechanisms driving the favourable eating behaviour changes and su

Body weight predicts Nicotinamide N-Methyltransferase activity in mouse fat.

AIM: Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) is a novel regulator of energy homeostasis in adipose tissue. NNMT expression is higher in obese mice than in lean mice, and NNMT knockdown prevents diet-induced obesity. Little is known about the regulation of enzyme activity during the development of obesity. The aim of this study was to analyze NNMT activity in tissues of mice with incipient and established obesity. METHODS: A fluorescence-based, sensitive, low-volume, high-throughput method was developed to assay NNMT activity. C57BL/6 mice were fed a high-fat diet for 4 weeks (incipient obesit

Temperament and body weight from ages 4 to 15 years.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In adulthood, conscientiousness and neuroticism are correlates of body weight and weight gain. The present research examines whether the childhood antecedents of these traits, persistence and negative reactivity, respectively, are associated with weight gain across childhood. We likewise examine sociability as a predictor of childhood weight gain and whether these three traits are associated with weight concerns and weight-management strategies in adolescence. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants (N=4153) were drawn from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, an ongoi

Body Contouring After Massive Weight Loss: A Personal Integrated Approach.

BACKGROUND: After massive weight loss, patients typically presented with skin redundancy, which causes enormous esthetic, physical, medical and psychological problems. The growing number of patients with these sequelae triggered an increase in the search for body contouring procedures, which in turn produced an important development in the post-bariatric reconstructive surgery. METHODS: The author describes the principles of a personal approach in post-bariatric reconstructive surgery. The concept is based on an integrative approach, attending to multiple anatomic segments in the same procedu

Effects of ghrelin in energy balance and body weight homeostasis.

Ghrelin is a gut peptide composed of 28 amino acids mostly secreted in the gastric fundus mucosa. It was isolated and described in 1999 by Kojima et al. and only three years later its specific receptor, GHSR1a, was also identified. Ghrelin, the endogenous ligand for the GH secretagogue receptor, is the only peripheral orexigenic hormone that activates the receptors to be found especially in the appetite center (hypothalamus and pituitary gland). Ghrelin is present in human plasma in two forms: an inactive form known as deacylated ghrelin, and an active form called acylated ghrelin synthesized

Effect of Body Weight on Dose of Vitamin K Antagonists.

OBJECTIVES: Numerous factors are well documented to affect the response to vitamin K antagonists (VKA), including dietary vitamin K, other drugs, age, pharmacogenetics, and disease states. Body weight is perhaps not as well known as a variable affecting VKA dose. Our aim was to review the literature regarding body weight and VKA dose requirements. METHODS: We reviewed the English-language literature via PubMed and Scopus using the search terms VKA, warfarin, acenocoumarol, phenprocoumon, fluindione, AND body weight. RESULTS: Among 32 studies conducted since the widespread use of the internat

Treadmill training and body weight support for walking after stroke.

BackgroundTreadmill training, with or without body weight support using a harness, is used in rehabilitation and might help to improve walking after stroke. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2005.ObjectivesTo determine if treadmill training and body weight support, individually or in combination, improve walking ability, quality of life, activities of daily living, dependency or death, and institutionalisation or death, compared with other physiotherapy gait training interventions after stroke. The secondary objective was to determine the safety and acceptability of thi

Body weight and ADHD: examining the role of self-regulation.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex and heterogeneous childhood disorder that often coexists with other psychiatric and somatic disorders. Recently, a link between ADHD and body weight dysregulation has been reported and often interpreted as impaired self-regulation that is shared between the two conditions. The objective of this study is to investigate the relation between body weight/BMI and cognitive, emotional and motor characteristics in children with ADHD. METHODS: 284 ADHD children were stratified by weight status/BMI according to WHO classification

Weight loss, body fat mass, and leptin in Parkinson's disease.

Weight loss is a common problem in Parkinson's disease (PD), but the causative mechanisms behind this weight loss are unclear. We compared 26 PD patients with sex and age matched healthy controls. Examinations were repeated at baseline, after one and after two years. Body fat mass was measured by Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). Seventy three per cent of the PD patients lost body weight. Loss of body fat mass constituted a considerable part of the loss of body weight. In the patients who lost weight, serum leptin levels were lower than in those who did not lose weight. The relationship between

A matter of insulin: developmental programming of body weight regulation.

Alterations of the intrauterine and early postnatal nutritional, metabolic and hormonal environment may cause a predisposition for disorders and diseases throughout later life. Studies in offspring of diabetic mothers (ODM) have decisively contributed to this perception and our understanding of causal mechanisms. Hormones in particular are environment-dependent organizers of the developing organism. When they are present in non-physiological concentrations during critical periods of early development, they can dose-dependently lead to a permanent malprogramming of fundamental regulatory system
