Can Self-Reported Seasonality Predict Prospectively Assessed Seasonal Changes of Self-Reported Mood, Food Cravings, Body Weight, Insomnia, and Physical Activity?

Controversy about seasonal affective disorder lies in the poor match between its definition and the available screening methods, as well as little knowledge about the predictive value of specific seasonal symptoms assessed by those methods. We examined whether the overall score as well as sub-domains of the seasonal pattern assessment questionnaire can predict seasonal changes in mood, sleep, appetite, weight, and physical activity in a one-year prospective study. In a sample of 336 Icelandic residents, we administered an online questionnaire once in each season, including the seasonal pattern

Long term impact of vonoprazan-based Helicobacter pylori treatment on gut microbiota and its relation to post-treatment body weight changes.

BACKGROUND: Vonoprazan-based Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) treatment is highly effective in eradicating the target bacteria; however, its post-1-year impact on gut microbiota is unknown. This study evaluated the impact of vonoprazan-based H. pylori therapy on gut microbiota 1-year post-therapy and investigated the relationship between body weight changes and post-therapy gut microbiota perturbations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between March and May 2019, 43 patients with H. pylori infections received either vonoprazan/amoxicillin (VA) or vonoprazan/amoxicillin/clarithromycin (VAC) therapy. Feca

Assessing the utility of cardiorespiratory fitness, visceral fat, and liver fat in predicting changes in insulin sensitivity beyond simple changes in body weight after exercise training in adolescents.

To examine the utility of changes in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and body composition in response to exercise training in adolescents with obesity beyond simple measures of body weight change. This is a secondary analysis of our previously published randomized trials of aerobic, resistance, and combined training. We included 104 adolescents (body mass index (BMI) ≥85th percentile) who had complete baseline and post-intervention data for CRF, regional body fat, insulin sensitivity, and oral glucose tolerance. Associations between changes in body composition and CRF with cardiometabolic vari

Body weight change in a medical supplement group in patients with early breast cancer during chemotherapy: a randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with early-stage breast cancer usually receive anthracycline-based chemotherapy, known for its adverse effects such as neutropenia, nausea, and vomiting, which can result in a state of malnutrition. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the use of oral nutritional support (ONS) in terms of body weight (BW), nutritional status, and quality of life (QOL) in patients with early-stage breast cancer receiving doxorubicin 60 mg/m2 and cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m2 for four cycles (4AC). METHODS: Patients with early-stage breast cancer scheduled to undergo 4AC were randomly

I Don't Want to Be Thin! Fear of Weight Change Is Not Just a Fear of Obesity: Research on the Body Mass Anxiety Scale.

Anxiety is one of the psychological factors associated with body weight experienced by people attempting to live up to expectations of an ideal body shape. The stigma of excessive or too low body weight and the stigmatization of people because of it is becoming a widespread problem with negative psychological and social consequences. One effect of the strong social pressure of beauty standards dependent on low body weight is the development of eating disorders and negative societal attitudes toward overweight or obese people. Research conducted to date has mainly focused on one dimension of we

Delayed hypersensitivity skin reactivity of patients with Crohn's disease: relationship with percentage ideal body weight and change after surgery.

Protein-energy malnutrition is common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease requiring surgery. Increased morbidity from sepsis may be associated with pre-operative weight loss due to associated diminished cellular immune defence mechanisms. Eighteen patients with Crohn's disease requiring elective abdominal surgery were divided into three nutritional groups before and after surgery, defined by their weight loss. The groups were well matched for other clinical variables. Delayed hypersensitivity skin reactivity to multiple antigens was measured before operation and during convalescence. T

Global cancer burden attributable to excess body weight, 1990 to 2021, decomposed by population size, aging, and epidemiological change.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to estimate cancer burden attributable to excess body weight (EBW) and identify its main source. METHODS: We obtained relative risks from meta-analyses, cancer and population data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021, and BMI prevalence data from the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC). We calculated the incidence of 11 cancers attributable to high BMI from 1990 to 2021, analyzed trends using joinpoint regression, and assessed cohort effects with the age-period-cohort model. Decomposition analysis was conducted by cancer-specific r

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and postmenopausal breast cancer: An evaluation of effect measure modification by body mass index and weight change.

BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been linked to breast cancer in many, but not all, previous studies. PAHs are lipophilic and stored in fat tissue, which we hypothesized may result in constant low-dose exposure to these carcinogens. No previous studies have evaluated whether obesity modifies associations between multiple measures of PAHs and breast cancer incidence. METHODS: This population-based study included 1,006 postmenopausal women with first primary in situ or invasive breast cancer and 990 age-frequency matched controls. To evaluate effect modification by obesi

Mapping quantitative trait loci underlying body weight changes that act at different times during high-fat diet challenge in collaborative cross mice.

Over one billion people worldwide suffer from obesity, and the number is continually rising. This epidemic is partly caused by the modern lifestyle. Animal models, especially mouse models, are crucial to identifying the genetic components of complex disorders and exploring the potential applications of these genetic findings. The body weight of the animals used in research is often measured regularly to monitor their health. Only endpoint measurements, such as ultimate body weight, are frequently examined in quantitative trait locus (QTL) studies; time series data, including weekly or biweekly

Postgastrectomy Syndrome Assessment Scale (PGSAS)-45 and changes in body weight are useful tools for evaluation of reconstruction methods following distal gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Billroth-I (BI) and Roux-en-Y (RY) are well-known reconstruction methods that are conducted following distal gastrectomy. However, the relative merits of these 2 methods are not well documented. The newly developed Postgastrectomy Syndrome Assessment Scale (PGSAS)-45 is an integrated questionnaire consisting of 45 items, including 8 items from the 8-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-8), 15 items from the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale, and 22 items selected by gastric surgeons. Postoperative QOL ratings were evaluated for each reconstruction method using PGSAS-45. METHODS:

The association of SLC16A1 (MCT1) gene polymorphism with body composition changes during weight loss interventions: A randomized trial with sex-dependent analysis.

Monocarboxylates, transported by monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs), have been proposed to influence energy homeostasis and exhibit altered metabolism during exercise. This study investigated the association between the Asp490Glu (T1470A) (rs1049434) polymorphism of the SLC16A1 (MCT1) gene and changes in body composition in males and females with overweight or obesity. The 173 participants (56.6% females) completed a 6-month randomized controlled trial, being assigned to the Supervised Exercise group (strength, endurance, or strength plus endurance training) or the Physical Activity (PA) Reco
