Arsenic contamination in rainwater harvesting tanks around Lake Poopó in Oruro, Bolivia: An unrecognized health risk.

Drinking water sources used by largely rural and indigenous communities around Lake Poopó in the Bolivian Altiplano are impacted by drought and a combination of natural and anthropogenic mining-related contaminants putting the long-term health and sustainability of these communities at risk. As an alternative drinking water source, 18 rainwater harvesting tanks connected to corrugated iron roofs, each with a first-flush system, were installed in 5 communities around the lake. The water quality of these tanks was monitored over 22 months and compared to alternative unprotected surface and groun

Protective human leucocyte antigen haplotype, HLA-DRB1*01-B*14, against chronic Chagas disease in Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by the flagellate parasite Trypanosoma cruzi affects 8-10 million people in Latin America. The mechanisms that underlie the development of complications of chronic Chagas disease, characterized primarily by pathology of the heart and digestive system, are not currently understood. To identify possible host genetic factors that may influence the clinical course of Chagas disease, Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) regional gene polymorphism was analyzed in patients presenting with differing clinical symptoms. METHODOLOGY: Two hundred and twenty nine chronic Chagas

Seroprevalence Patterns Suggestive of Postnatal Trypanosoma cruzi Acquisition in a Low-Infestation Area of Eastern Bolivia.

Chagas disease remains a major public health concern in Latin America, with Bolivia reporting one of the highest burdens of infection. While congenital transmission has become the predominant route of new infections in several countries, vector-borne transmission persists in rural and peri-urban regions. Postrervalle, in the department of Santa Cruz, is officially classified as a low-infestation area; however, updated community-level data remain limited. We conducted a cross-sectional study in July 2023 involving 58 mothers and 104 of their children in Postrervalle. Participants underwent sero

Biomarkers in Trypanosoma cruzi-infected and uninfected individuals with varying severity of cardiomyopathy in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Twenty to thirty percent of persons with Trypanosoma cruzi infection eventually develop cardiomyopathy. If an early indicator were to be identified and validated in longitudinal studies, this could enable treatment to be prioritized for those at highest risk. We evaluated cardiac and extracellular matrix remodeling markers across cardiac stages in T. cruzi infected (Tc+) and uninfected (Tc-) individuals. METHODS: Participants were recruited in a public hospital in Santa Cruz, Bolivia and assigned cardiac severity stages by electrocardiogram and echocardiogram. BNP, NTproBNP, CKMB,

Are mosquitoes diverted from repellent-using individuals to non-users? Results of a field study in Bolivia.

Outside sub-Saharan Africa, Anopheline mosquito exophagic and/or crepuscular behaviour patterns imply that insecticide-treated nets may provide incomplete protection from malaria-infective mosquito bites. Supplementary repellent treatment has been recommended in such circumstances, especially where vectors are exophilic and so are not susceptible to residual insecticide spraying. As maintaining complete usage of repellents in a community is unrealistic, the potential negative impact on non-users of repellent usage by 'neighbours' in the same community needs to be addressed in the context of he

Scaling-up a public health innovation: a comparative study of post-abortion care in Bolivia and Mexico.

Post-abortion care (PAC), an innovation for treating women with complications of unsafe abortion, has been introduced in public health systems around the world since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). This article analyzes the process of scaling-up two of the three key elements of the original PAC model: providing prompt clinical treatment to women with abortion complications and offering post-abortion contraceptive counseling and methods in Bolivia and Mexico. The conceptual framework developed from this comparative analysis includes the environmental cont

Antimicrobial resistance genes are enriched in aerosols near impacted urban surface waters in La Paz, Bolivia.

Antibiotic resistance poses a major global health threat. Understanding emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance in environmental media is critical to the design of control strategies. Because antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) may be aerosolized from contaminated point sources and disseminated more widely in localized environments, we assessed ARGs in aerosols in urban La Paz, Bolivia, where wastewater flows in engineered surface water channels through the densely populated urban core. We quantified key ARGs and a mobile integron (MI) via ddPCR and E. coli spp. as a fecal indicato

Patient-led partner notification for syphilis: Strategies used by women accessing antenatal care in urban Bolivia.

Maternal syphilis adversely affects close to one million pregnancies worldwide every year with consequences that may include spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, neonatal death, premature birth, neurological impairment and bone deformities of the neonate. In Bolivia, the maternal syphilis rate has been estimated at 4.3% among women with live births and 26% among women with stillbirths. Partner notification is critical to the prevention of maternal re-infection and vertical transmission of syphilis. Patient-led partner notification, also known as patient referral, is the recommended starting point

Fishing activity, health characteristics and mercury exposure of Amerindian women living alongside the Beni River (Amazonian Bolivia).

Populations in Bolivian Amazonia are exposed to mercury contamination through fish ingestion. A group of 170 Amerindian women living along the banks of the Beni River were examined in order to detect any adverse effects on their health consistent with the toxic effects of mercury. The mercury content of the women's hair (H-Hg) was used as the bio-indicator of mercury exposure. The women answered a 24-h food recall questionnaire on the frequency of their fish consumption. They also underwent a clinical examination with their weight, stature, hemoglobin concentration in blood, and blood pressure

Psychometric properties of the Ambivalence towards Men Inventory and the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory in a university sample from Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Ambivalent sexism refers to the coexistence of both hostile and benevolent attitudes towards men and women. The present study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the abbreviated versions of the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI) and the Ambivalence towards Men Inventory (AMI), thereby providing more parsimonious tools for research in social psychology. METHOD: The sample comprised 2216 volunteer students (53.1% women and 46.9% men) who had been in a romantic relationship within the past twelve months. Participants completed the Likert-type scales, and the data were ana

Bolivia's Path to Lower Emissions: Sugar Cane Ethanol and GREET Model Insights into Ethanol-Gasoline Blends.

Bolivia's transition toward sustainable energy is advancing through the integration of sugar cane ethanol as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. This study presents the first gate-to-gate (GtG) life cycle assessment (LCA) of Bolivian ethanol production, developed using Aspen Plus v14 with a base unit of 1 MJ of energy. The assessment considers a sugar cane milling capacity of 23,000 tons per day and an annual production potential of 108 million liters of anhydrous ethanol. Distillation emerged as the most significant contributor to the GtG global warming potential (GWP) at 31.0 gCO2eq/L; how

Barriers to leprosy elimination in Bolivia: Exploring perspectives and experiences of medical professionals and leprosy patients-A phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy elimination has recently re-entered the global health sphere, with the World Health Organisation's (WHO) "Towards zero leprosy" strategy (2021-2030). Previously, its elimination had been defined as a prevalence of less than 1 case per 10,000, which was achieved on a global scale in 2000, leading to a large withdrawal of resources from leprosy control and to neglect on both global and national scales. Despite this, leprosy continued to spread and affect hundreds of thousands of people annually. METHODS: The study explores the barriers to leprosy elimination in Bolivia, usin

Evaluation of the effectiveness of high-risk human papilloma self-sampling test for cervical cancer screening in Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: In Bolivia the incidence and mortality rates of uterine cervix cancer are the highest in America. The main factor contributing to this situation is the difficulty of establishing and maintaining quality prevention programs based on cytology. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of HR-HPV testing on self-collected samples to detect cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia and identify the best combination of screening tests. METHODS: A total of 469 women, divided in two groups, were included in this study. The first group included 362 women that underwent three consecutively primary s

Litomosoides (Nemata: Filarioidea) of bats from Bolivia with records for three known species and the description of a new species.

Herein, we describe Litomosoides salazari n. sp. collected from the body cavity of the yellow bat, Lasiurus ega , from Bolivia. This new species of filarioid nematode is most closely related to the carinii group and is characterized by its relatively small size with the vulva located slightly posterior to the esophago-intestinal junction; an arrow-shaped buccal capsule; and a short, rounded tail. New host and locality records for both Litomosoides hamletti and L. chandleri in phyllostomid bats, and L. brasiliensis occurring in both phyllostomid and vespertilionid bats, are provided. A physiological time analysis of the duration of the gonotrophic cycle of Anopheles pseudopunctipennis and its implications for malaria transmission in Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: The length of the gonotrophic cycle varies the vectorial capacity of a mosquito vector and therefore its exact estimation is important in epidemiological modelling. Because the gonotrophic cycle length depends on temperature, its estimation can be satisfactorily computed by means of physiological time analysis. METHODS: A model of physiological time was developed and calibrated for Anopheles pseudopunctipennis, one of the main malaria vectors in South America, using data from laboratory temperature controlled experiments. The model was validated under varying temperatures and coul
