Although it is clear that opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) changes alignment in the coronal plane, which is its objective, it is not clear how this procedure affects knee kinematics throughout the range of joint movement and in other planes. Our research question was: how does opening-wedge HTO change three-dimensional tibiofemoral and patellofemoral kinematics in loaded flexion in patients with varus deformity?Three-dimensional kinematics were assessed over 0° to 60° of loaded flexion using an MRI method before and after opening-wedge HTO in a cohort of 13 men (14 knees). BACKGROUND: The patella is a sesamoid bone that comprises a vital component of the extensor mechanism of the knee. It has static and dynamic restraints that differ throughout range of motion of the knee. Tracking, and potentially maltracking, are impacted additionally by the bony anatomy of the pelvis, femur, and tibia.
INDICATIONS: Evaluation of patients with patellofemoral instability warrants consideration of each of these nuanced arenas of tracking. The diagnostic workup must be based on a thorough understanding of anatomy, which guides focused physical examination maneuvers that are not

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta is an autosomal-dominant disorder of the connective tissue. Also known as brittle bone disease, it renders those affected susceptible to fractures after minimal trauma. Therefore, it is important to minimize the risk of falls and subsequent fractures in patients with this disease. In-toeing is a common condition in children that can result from various pathologic entities, including anteversion, internal tibial torsion, and metatarsus adductus. These conditions can result in frequent tripping and other functional problems.
METHODS: A descriptive study was u

In the scoliotic spine, torsion is generally evaluated in relation to axial rotation of the apical vertebra. In the lower limbs, the changes in torsion by age of femoral anteversion (FAV) relative to tibial torsion (TT) have been studied in dried bones, normal growing subjects and adults and subjects with osteoarthritis of the hip or the knee. This paper reports the application of real-time ultrasound to FAV and TT in normal children age 11-18 years and in scoliosis screening referrals with particular reference to how FAV relates to TT as 1) ratios, and 2) tibio-femoral index (TFI) of torsion,

The growing interest in shoulder joint imaging comes from the ever-increasing demand for such an examination in orthopedics. Since more complete and detailed imaging of bone, capsuloligamentous and musculotendinous compartments is always needed, CT arthrography has necessarily become a widely used method. In this study, 282 patients were investigated with CT arthrography. Seventy per cent of them had anatomical instability, 17.3% had functional instability and the extant 12.7% had shoulder pain. In traumatic instability, the most often injured structures were the glenoid labra (91%) and the ca

BACKGROUND: Hip prostheses with short anatomical stems were designed for metaphyseal fixation and to spare bone stock. We present a study of a short anatomical femoral stem used in all age groups of patients with Dorr A and B type of femora.
METHODS: We reviewed radiographs of 85 hips in 74 patients who had a cementless total hip arthroplasty with a short anatomical 80 mm femoral stem designed to achieve pure metaphyseal fixation. A ream-only technique was used for femoral canal preparation in all patients. At each follow-up, radiological evaluation was performed for stem alignment, proximal

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the immediate thoracic kyphosis (TK) and acetabular anteversion (AA) postoperatively are correlated with proximal junctional failure (PJF) in adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients underwent surgical treatment.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study. Following institutional ethics approval, a total of 57 patients (49 Female, eight Male) with ASD underwent surgery fused to sacroiliac bone (S1, S2, or ilium) from March 2014 to January 2019 were included. All of those patients were followed up for at least 2 years. Demographic, radiographic and surgical data wer

BACKGROUND: Revision surgery for complex acetabular defects is still technically challenging. In this study, we discussed and compared the clinical and radiological outcomes of revision surgery between two methods using double-trabecular metal (TM) cups alone or combined with impacting bone grafting (IBG).
METHODS: The records of 18 patients (18 hips) who underwent revision surgery using double-trabecular metal (double-TM) cups between 2008 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. All the patients were diagnosed with Paprosky III acetabular defects. The acetabular defects were reconstructed by

BACKGROUND: Subtrochanteric femur fractures account for 40 % of proximal femur fractures, and intramedullary nailing (IMN) is the treatment of choice, but there is a lack of uniformity in the selection of models. The challenge of individualized adaptation of diameter and length needs to be resolved, as too large or too small may lead to a lack of stability or increased surgical risk.
OBJECTIVE: To establish a parametric selection model by analyzing the biomechanical properties of IMNs of different specifications to provide a basis for the clinical optimization of implantation strategies.

AIMS: The distal femoral epiphysis and epiphyseal plate are essential for skeletal morphogenesis during development. However, it is unclear how these growth mechanisms are affected by distal femoral torsion (DFT) and patellar instability. This study aimed to investigate how DFT development affects epiphyseal plate growth mechanisms.
METHODS: This study evaluated CT-based 3D reconstructed images of the distal femoral epiphyseal plates in 98 knees exhibiting trochlear dysplasia (50 patients). Morphological parameters including femoral anteversion, DFT, and the anatomical epicondylar axis-poster

AIM: Post-traumatic humerus varus can develop after an insufficient reduction technique. Reduced abduction, anteversion or rotation is seen, often associated with painful impingement. The radiographic sign is a diminished shaft-head angle less than 140 degrees with a consecutive elevation of the greater tubercule above the head rim and a subacromial narrowing. We analysed the data of the Constant score pre- and postcorrectionem.
METHODS: Between 1992 and 1999 we treated 8 patients with post-traumatic humerus varus. The follow-up time lasted for 3 years after the correction procedure. By means

OBJECTIVE: The proximal femoral varus osteotomy (FVO) aims to re-centre the femoral head in the acetabular socket after prognostically unfavourable subluxation, e.g. in Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD).
INDICATIONS: No unified indication criteria have been defined yet for containment therapy in LCPD. However, specific radiographic features related to deformity development, age at diagnosis or onset and classifications describing pathomorphological changes in the femoral head related to bone necrosis can support decisionmaking.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Absolute contraindications-a hinge abducted j

BACKGROUND: Injury to the brachial plexus during birth results in paralysis of the upper extremity in as many as one in 250 births and can lead to substantial functional deficits in the shoulder. The goal of this study was to characterize the development of bone and joint deformities in paralyzed neonatal shoulders and to assess the improvement of these deformities after muscle function recovery with use of an animal model.
METHODS: Intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin were used to paralyze the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and posterior deltoid of the left shoulders of mice at birth.

PURPOSE: To explore the relationship between preoperative J-sign grading and structural bone abnormalities in patients with recurrent patellar dislocation (RPD).
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on RPD patients over 5 years. Patients were categorised based on J-sign grade into low (J- and J1+), moderate (J2+) and high groups (J3+). Trochlear dysplasia (TD) and osseous structures (femoral anteversion angle [FAA], knee torsion, tibial tuberosity-trochlear groove [TT-TG] distance, Caton-Deschamps index) were assessed and grouped according to risk factor thresholds. The χ2 test was us

PURPOSE: Combined anteversion (CA), integrating acetabular (AA) and femoral anteversion (FA), is crucial for total hip arthroplasty (THA) stability. We evaluated CA distribution in natural Asian hips, AA and FA contributions to CA variance, and sex and age effects.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 200 normal contralateral hips from patients with femoral neck fractures. Using CT-based 3D models, we calculated AA and FA. CA was determined using the Widmer equation (CA = AA + 0.7 × FA). We evaluated sex and age differences and used standardised regression coefficients to identify CA variance

BACKGROUND: Treatment of severe ankle arthritis with varus malalignment remains controversial.
METHODS: In 14 consecutive total ankle replacements (TAR) with tibiotalar varus malalignment of above 15 (range, 16 to 41) degrees, a complete transfer of the tibialis anterior tendon together with other soft-tissue and bony realignment measures was added to the primary procedure.
RESULTS: After mean followup time of 33.4 (range, 21 to 49) months, only one case showed minor tibiotalar tilt in the frontal plane. The overall clinical results were good to excellent in all but two cases with an average

BACKGROUND: The direct anterior approach (DAA) and posterior approach (PA) are two of the most common surgical approaches used for total hip arthroplasty (THA) worldwide. The curved anatomical collum femoris-preserving (CFP) stem was designed to preserve the bone of the femoral neck and allow physiologic load transfer along the trabecular systems, which may better restore hip biomechanics, improve triplanar stem stability and improve the long-term survival rate. We believe this study will demonstrate whether the DAA is suitable for THA with CFP stems.
METHODS: The data of patients who underwe

BACKGROUND: Torsion is a frequent reason for consultation in paediatric orthopaedics. Torsion of the femur and the tibia in children change during growth. Depending on the age and possibility for compensation, this can be reflected in the gait pattern. Different causes can affect the normal development of torsion.
DIAGNOSTICS: In the context of paediatric orthopaedic assessment, the distinction between physiological and pathological torsion is essential. In addition to the patient history and observation of the gait pattern, as well as a detailed clinical examination, additional imaging techn
