The impacts of oral and gut microbiota on alveolar bone loss in periodontitis.

Periodontitis, a chronic infectious disease, primarily arises from infections and the invasion of periodontal pathogens. This condition is typified by alveolar bone loss resulting from host immune responses and inflammatory reactions. Periodontal pathogens trigger aberrant inflammatory reactions within periodontal tissues, thereby exacerbating the progression of periodontitis. Simultaneously, these pathogens and metabolites stimulate osteoclast differentiation, which leads to alveolar bone resorption. Moreover, a range of systemic diseases, including diabetes, postmenopausal osteoporosis, obes

Evaluation of Molecular Test for the Discrimination of "Naked" DNA from Infectious Parvovirus B19 Particles in Serum and Bone Marrow Samples.

Low levels of parvovirus B19 (B19V) DNA can be detected in the circulation and in different tissue of immunocompetent individuals for months or years, which has been linked to inflammatory diseases such as cardiomyopathy, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis, and vasculitis. However, the detection of B19V DNA does not necessarily imply that infectious virions are present. This study aimed to evaluate the method based on the Benzonase® treatment for differentiation between the infectious virions from "naked" DNA in serum and bone marrow (BM) samples to be useful for the B19V routine diagnosis. Fanconi Syndrome Induced by Tenofovir in a Diabetic Patient with a History of Chronic Hepatitis B: A Case Report.

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor and has been extensively used in the first-line treatment of viral infectious diseases such as chronic hepatitis B. Despite its good safety, the development of Fanconi syndrome is a rare adverse effect of long-term tenofovir therapy. Here, we report a case of a 62-year-old diabetic woman with a history of chronic hepatitis B who was exposed to tenofovir and developed drug-associated Fanconi syndrome. After discounting tenofovir, the patient's bone pain was markedly reduced.

Hemophagocytic syndrome causing complete bone marrow failure. Report of an extreme case of a reactive histiocytic disorder.

The hemophagocytic syndrome is a reactive disorder of the mononuclear phagocytic system. Most of the cases are rare complications of common infectious and neoplastic diseases, although there may be an underlying immune disorder predisposing to this syndrome. We report a case in association with immune thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia (Evans' syndrome). The hemophagocytic reaction appeared after a bacterial infection of the urinary tract and presented with abrupt pancytopenia and complete hemopoietic failure. We discuss the possible mechanisms of bone marrow failure related with the hemoph

Chronic lymphopenia and neutropenia in a dog with large granular lymphocytic leukemia.

T-cell large granular lymphocytic leukemia (T-cell LGLL) is the most common presentation of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in dogs. Aleukemic or subleukemic leukemia is a particularly rare variation in both humans and dogs, where bone marrow proliferation is either not or only sparsely translated in the peripheral blood. Neutropenia is a prominent feature in cases of human T-cell LGLL but is normally absent in canine CLL. This report describes a case of a dog presented with an almost 3-year history of asymptomatic neutropenia, lymphopenia, and thrombocytopenia (without anemia). A bone marr

Clinico-hematological Portrait of Bone Marrow Infections: Unusual Visitors Unveiled.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow examination is a crucial diagnostic tool for both hematological and non-hematological disorders, ranging from benign to malignant ones. It is a relatively simple and easy procedure for evaluating pyrexia of unknown origin, as it often leads to an etiological diagnosis. The study aims to evaluate the clinico-hematological profile in various infections infiltrating bone marrow and study the spectrum of morphologic alterations in bone marrow aspirate in various infections. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Bihar

The diagnostic and therapeutic value of FDG PET/CT for infectious diseases in FUO/IUO patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of infectious diseases is often a challenging problem faced by clinicians, especially in the case of complex infections manifested as fever of unknown origin or inflammation of unknown origin (FUO/IUO). Currently, 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) Positron emission tomography/Computed tomography (PET/CT) has been increasingly used in the inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to explore the diagnostic and therapeutic value of FDG PET/CT for infectious diseases in patients with FUO/IUO. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical and i

Immunohistochemically proven cytomegalovirus gastrointestinal diseases in three patients with autoimmune diseases.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease is a serious infectious complication in compromised hosts. Therefore, there are several studies on the diagnosis and prophylactic/pre-emptive therapy of CMV diseases in patients with solid organ transplants, bone marrow transplants, hematopoietic stem cell transplants, and HIV diseases. However, in patients with autoimmune disease, there are only few studies on the diagnosis and prediction of CMV diseases. In the present article, we described three autoimmune cases that developed CMV gastrointestinal disease because of therapy-related immunosuppression. Although a

Coxiella burnetii Infection With Severe Hyperferritinemia in an Asplenic Patient.

Q fever is an uncommon but likely underreported zoonotic infection. Severe hyperferritinemia has been associated with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and other infectious diseases. In this study, we report a case of Coxiella burnetii infection in an asplenic patient complicated by severe hyperferritinemia and bone marrow infiltration. In this case, the marked ferritin elevation may have been an indicator of profound systemic macrophage activation due to preferential intracellular infection of this cell type by C burnetii, perhaps exacerbated by altered mononuclear phagocyte system function

Ancient temporal bone osteopathology.

Few isolated specimens or series of temporal bone abnormalities from antiquity are reported from North America. Infections were in the past and are today the most common otologic problems. Differentiating infectious disease residua from other causes of osteopathology has proven difficult for some not conversant with disease pathophysiology. During clinical experience spanning five decades and research involving several thousand aboriginal skeletons, data relating to temporal bone disease were accumulated. As a didactic exercise, findings in 18 illustrative temporal bones encountered during res

The influence of maternal levels of vitamin D and adiponectin on offspring's health.

BACKGROUND: From the very beginning of life, biological events in the intrauterine environment influence the developing child, its growth, maturation and adaptation. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of maternal vitamin D and adiponectin status on offspring growth, general and bone health. METHODS: 162 healthy pregnant women were included in the study, with their vitaminD and adiponectin levels measured in the 32 nd week of pregnancy. Body weight and bone mineral density measurements of their offspring were performed at birth and at the age of three, six, nine and twelve months.

Parasitic central nervous system infections in immunocompromised hosts: malaria, microsporidiosis, leishmaniasis, and African trypanosomiasis.

Immunosuppression associated with HIV infection or following transplantation increases susceptibility to central nervous system (CNS) infections. Because of increasing international travel, parasites that were previously limited to tropical regions pose an increasing infectious threat to populations at risk for acquiring opportunistic infection, especially people with HIV infection or individuals who have received a solid organ or bone marrow transplant. Although long-term immunosuppression caused by medications such as prednisone likely also increases the risk for acquiring infection and for

HIV-positive patients presenting with peripheral blood cytopenias: is bone marrow assessment a priority?

INTRODUCTION: Hematologic abnormalities are frequent among persons living with HIV (PLWH). The bone marrow aspirate (BMA) and biopsy (BMB) are commonly performed in the diagnostic approach of patients with unexplained cytopenias. Changes in antiretrovirals, supportive therapy and increased life expectancy have modified the distribution and etiology of cytopenias, questioning their use. Our aim was to analyze the diagnostic yield of BMA, BMB and marrow cultures for the evaluation of cytopenias in PLWH. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort of ≥ 18-year-old PLWH undergoing bone marrow assess

Rehabilitation of atrophic maxilla using the combination of autogenous and allogeneic bone grafts followed by protocol-type prosthesis.

Currently, there are several techniques for the rehabilitation of atrophic maxillary ridges in literature. The grafting procedure using autogenous bone is considered ideal by many researchers, as it shows osteogenic capability and causes no antigenic reaction. However, this type of bone graft has some shortcomings, mainly the restricted availability of donor sites. In recent years, several alternatives have been investigated to supply the disadvantages of autogenous bone grafts. In such studies, allogeneic bone grafts, which are obtained from individuals with different genetic load, but from t

Osteoarticular Infections in MIMIC-IV, A Clinical and Microbiological Analysis.

Osteoarticular infections (OAIs) remain challenging, particularly in the context of rising antimicrobial resistance. Using the MIMIC-IV database, this study applies a structured informatics workflow to characterize inflammatory marker (IM) ordering patterns, comorbidity-specific infection risks, and the identification of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). Findings highlight overuse of white blood cell (WBC) counts and distinct pathogen profiles across comorbidity groups. Immune deficiency and diabetes were associated with higher infection rates, while sickle cell disease did not increase O
