INTRODUCTION: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) presents various imaging abnormalities in joints and diverse nail changes, but the link between nail and joint findings remains unclear. This study aimed to gain a better understanding of the relationships between nail manifestations and abnormal articular architectures by investigating the associations between nail abnormalities and articular findings in PsA-affected interphalangeal joints.
METHODS: A total of 106 nails adjacent to PsA-affected distal interphalangeal joints were examined in 29 patients who underwent comprehensive systemic evaluation an

This study compared the biomechanical characteristics of proximal femur bionic nail (PFBN) and proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) in treating osteoporotic femoral intertrochanteric fractures using finite element analysis. Under similar bone density, the PFBN outperforms the PFNA in maximum femoral displacement, internal fixation displacement, stress distribution in the femoral head and internal fixation components, and femoral neck varus angle. As the bone density decreases, the PFBN's biomechanical advantages over PFNA become more pronounced. This finding suggests that the PFBN is supe

In this study, we treated infected ankle bone defects with the induced membrane two-stage technique. The ankle was fused with a retrograde intramedullary nail in the second stage, and the aim of this study was to observe the clinical effect. We retrospectively enrolled patients with infected bone defects of the ankle admitted to our hospital between July 2016 and July 2018. In the first stage, the ankle was temporarily stabilized with a locking plate, and antibiotic bone cement was used to fill the defects after debridement. In the second stage, the plate and cement were removed, the ankle was

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to evaluate the results of plate augmentation and bone grafting without removing the nail in the treatment of nonunited, nailed femoral shaft fractures.
METHODS: Twenty patients with atrophic nonunion femoral shaft fractures initially fixed by intramedullary nail were treated by augmentation plating and iliac bone graft with retention of the nail. Patients were evaluated at regular intervals using an X-ray and Wu scoring system, which assesses clinical and radiological signs of healing.
RESULTS: All 20 patients achieved bony union at a mean time of 4.9 months (3

BACKGROUND: Closed reamed locked intramedullary nailing has been the treatment of choice for most of femoral shaft fractures. A high union rate with a low complication rate is generally predictable. For an aseptic femoral shaft nonunion with a prior inserted intramedullary nail, exchange nailing is one of favored surgical techniques for treatment. However, a greatly varied success rate of 72-100% has been reported. To improve the success rate of exchange femur nailing, a modified bone grafting technique was developed. The purpose of this retrospective study intended to evaluate outcomes of suc

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to evaluate clinically and radiologically the patients for whom compressive and non-compressive intramedullary nails were applied and to analyse the compression effectiveness in adult femur distal diaphysis fractures.
HYPOTHESIS: The compressive locked nails shortened the union period in the distal diaphysis fractures, and it was found to be an effective method, as the pseudoarthrosis rate was lower.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted among 59 patients for whom the compressive and non-compressive IMNs were applied to treat femur dis

INTRODUCTION: Distal nail embedding due to hyponychium hypertrophy can be caused by traumatic or surgical avulsion of the nail. As a consequence of these changes, the nail plate is blocked through the deformed tip of the toe. Changes that occur at the tip of the big toe are due to bone growth on the dorsal surface of the distal end of the distal phalanx. This study aimed to present a surgical technique for the treatment of hypertrophy of the tip of the toe and evaluate its effectiveness.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The surgical technique involved remodeling of the tip of the big toe, with removal o

BACKGROUND: Closed, locked intramedullary nailing has been accepted as the gold standard in the care of femoral fractures, with reported union rates as high as 98-100%. Closed, locked intramedullary nailing often requires expensive equipment which is a challenge in developing countries. Segmental long bone fractures are often a result of high-energy trauma and hence often associated with a lot of injuries to the surrounding soft tissues. This consequently results in higher rates of delayed or nonunion. This study was proposed to review the outcome of management of segmental fractures with lock

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the distal third of the tibia are mostly associated with a fibular fracture that often requires fixation. The preferred treatment of distal tibial fracture is the minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) procedure. However, there are no clear cut guidelines on fixation of the fibular fracture and currently most orthopedic surgeons use a plate osteosynthesis for the fibula as well. A common complication associated with dual plating is an increased chance of soft tissue necrosis, infection, and in some cases resulting in an exposed implant. We conduct

INTRODUCTION: Intramedullary nailing has long been used successfully in the treatment of aseptic nonunions of the femur and tibia. However, recently the efficacy of reamed intramedullary nailing in the treatment of nonunions of the femur has been questioned by some publications reporting unfavourable results. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the treatment results of femoral and tibial diaphyseal nonunions with intramedullary nailing.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed thirty-two patients with femoral or tibial diaphyseal nonunions who were treated with reamed intramedul

This retrospective study evaluated the results of plating versus intramedullary fixation in the management of unstable, diaphyseal fractures of both bones of the forearm in children. Of the 64 children included, 45 were treated with intramedullary fixation, 19 with plating. Only A3 forearm fractures of the middle third or the transition zones were included; Galeazzi, Monteggia, and Greenstick fractures were excluded. Full radiological follow-up to union was obtained in all cases and 60 patients returned for clinical evaluation 32.3 months (plating) and 20.6 months (intramedullary fixation) aft

We present our experience with elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) used in the single bone fixation of both bones forearm fractures in children. From May 2002 to July 2004, 20 children (14 boys and 6 girls), median age of 10 years (range 6-15 years) were treated with ESIN for 16 closed and 4 grade I open forearm fractures. All patients were reviewed clinically at a median follow-up of 20 months (range 6-30 months). All fractures were radiologically united at a median of 6.7 weeks (6-9 weeks). The median operating time was 35min (range 25-60min). The median hospital stay was 2 days (ra

Since Virchow first described the unicameral bone cyst (UBC) in 1876, several methods for management were proposed. Currently performed surgical procedures include curettage combined with bone grafting, allografting with freeze-dried crushed cortical bone, use of homologous cancellous bone chips, the application of high-porosity hydroxyapatite, and cryosurgery. Decompression with multiple drill holes and intralesional injections of either steroids or bone marrow have also been used to treat UBC, with variable success rates. Elastic stable intramedullary nailing for the treatment of UBC in long

INTRODUCTION: Fractures occur in children at an incidence only surpassed by women >85 years and account for 25 % of paediatric injuries. Over the last three decades, there has been a trend towards operative management of children's fractures including utilisation of flexible nails as popularised by the Nancy group in the 1980s. Between 5 and 11 % of paediatric forearm fractures are now fixed in this manner with complication rates of 12-42 %. This study shares the experience of a paediatric level one major trauma centre using this technique in managing long bone fractures in children.
