In order to locate copies of the works of Jean Emmanuel Gilibert (1741-1814) located in Poland, 54 libraries were selected for inquiry, chosen on the basis of their history or of the nature or size of their collections. So far, 27 libraries have responded to the inquiry. There are works of J.E. Gilibert stored in 14 of them (Table 1). To date, 102 copies of different editions catalogued under Gilibert's name have been recorded in libraries in Poland. These books were placed in these libraries in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, mainly as part of donations from private libraries. I

Various systems by using electric pulse, calcium, or polyethylene glycol have been developed in the past decade for the in vitro fusion of plant gametes. These in vitro systems provide a new way to study the fertilization mechanisms of plants. In this study, we developed a bovine serum albumin (BSA)-mediated fusion system for the in vitro fusion of maize gametes. The in vitro fusion of the isolated single egg cell and sperm cell of maize was observed microscopically in the BSA solution and the fertilized egg cell showed normal cell wall regeneration and nuclear division. The effects of the BSA

Giovanni Antonio Scopoli (1723-1788), a physician-naturalist of the Enlightenment, is primarily remembered for his contributions to botany and entomology. Less attention has been paid to his medical work De hydrargyro Idriensi Tentamina physico-chymico-medica (1761), written during his fifteen years of service as physician at the mercury mines of Idrija (present-day Slovenia). Its third section, De morbis fossorum hydrargyri, offers a detailed occupational-medical account of disorders and diseases among mercury miners and smelter workers, including tremor, salivation, stomatitis, respiratory d

Bacteria capable of dechlorinating the toxic environmental contaminant dichloromethane (DCM, CH2Cl2) are of great interest for potential bioremediation applications. A novel, strictly anaerobic, DCM-fermenting bacterium, "DCMF", was enriched from organochlorine-contaminated groundwater near Botany Bay, Australia. The enrichment culture was maintained in minimal, mineral salt medium amended with dichloromethane as the sole energy source. PacBio whole genome SMRTTM sequencing of DCMF allowed de novo, gap-free assembly despite the presence of cohabiting organisms in the culture. Illumina sequenci

The interaction between two contrasting examples of lake sediments and small concentrations of mercury added to the sediments in solution has been studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Whereas one lake (Esthwaite Water) is biologically productive, with a seasonal cycle of phytoplankton activity, including stratification and Fe(III) reduction, and a mineralogy involving quartz, muscovite, and clinochlore, the other (Botany Pond) remains oxic throughout the year. In the latter case, the sediment is predominantly quartz and calcite. Chemical analyses of these two lake sediments reflectthe

Lichen-specific natural products exhibit a wide range of biological activities, which makes them potentially useful in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and nutritional industries. In the present study, a capillary electrophoresis method was developed and optimized for the separation of seven major metabolites, physodic acid, 3-hydroxyphysodic acid, atranorin, physodalic acid, chloroatranorin, salazinic acid, and protocetraric acid, found in Hypogymnia physodes. The optimization was performed using a design of experiments approach, focusing on four critical parameters: boric acid concentration, de

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the anti-cancer effect of resveratrol on Michigan cancer foundation-7 (MCF-7) and hepatoblastoma cell line (HepG2) cells.
METHODS: The study was carried out at the Department of Botany and Microbiology, Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University, Al-kharj, Saudi Arabia, from August 2022 to October 2022. Different concentrations of resveratrol were added to the MCF-7 and HepG2 cell lines. Cell death and proliferation were measured with MTT and Trypan blue exclusion assays. Apoptosis markers were assessed by using a quantitative PCR assay (qPCR).
RESULTS: The resveratrol wa

This article examines the therapeutic practices of the inhabitants of Jaú National Park (JNP), state of Amazonas, the most important feature of this region being its rich biodiversity associated with isolation in regard to conventional medical services. Seven months of field work were guided by methods of anthropology and botany. A total of 120 plants and 29 animals were utilized in 519 recorded uses comprising 81 therapeutic purposes. These were grouped under 15 categories of use, including: gastrointestinal disturbances, inflammatory processes, genitourinary disturbances, fever, mishaps with

Alkaloids, as natural bioactive compounds, exhibit significant pharmacological activities and broad applications, holding considerable research value in botany, drug metabolism, and toxicology. In the field of mass spectrometry detection, alkaloids are extensively studied due to their favorable response in positive ion mode. As a mature and rapidly evolving molecular imaging technology, mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) can intuitively visualize the spatial distribution of alkaloids in tissues without the need for labeling. Currently, the most commonly used MSI techniques for alkaloids include s

Lepidium meyenii(maca)was a herbaceous plant of the family Cruciferae. It is native to the andes region of South America where the local people had been growing and consuming maca for centuries. The unique chemical composition and physiological function of maca were widely concerned worldwide. It was introduced to China in 2002, and were cultivated successfully in Yunnan, Tibet, Sichuan, Jilin and other places with a certain size. Maca contained not only rich nutrition such as protein, vitamin and mineral matter, but also lots of secondary metabolites as maca alkaloids, glucosinolates, volatil

Historically, sweet violet (Viola odorata L.) was an important plant used in various ways, including folk medicine, rituals and festivals, as food, and as an ornamental plant in gardens. The use of this species has varied from ancient times to the present; it is most consistently praised as a medicinal plant, while its popularity as an ornamental and edible species has been intermittent. A review of the extensive scientific literature on its pharmacological and medicinal properties demonstrates its value and the immense diversity of its uses in these fields to this day. While providing a conci

Chloroplast development is an important subject in botany. In this study, a rice (Oryza sativa) mutant exhibiting impairment in early chloroplast development (seedling leaf albino (sla)) was isolated from a filial generation via hybridization breeding. The sla mutant seedlings have an aberrant form of chloroplasts, which resulted in albinism at the first and second leaves; however, the leaf sheath was green. The mutant gradually turned green after the two-leaf stage, and the third leaf was a normal shade of green. Map-based cloning indicated that the gene OsBT1-3, which belongs to the mitochon
