[Primary diffuse leptomeningeal leiomyomatosis].

A female patient aged 28 fell ill with manifestations of sensory aphasia, headache and signs of cerebral compression. Except for a bilateral papilledema there were no further pathological clinical and paraclinical findings. Later on, amaurosis, deafness, anosmia and generalized muscular hypotonia developed. The nuclear magnetic resonance image revealed a major accumulation of contrast medium in the leptomeninx. Biopsy demonstrated a mesenchymal neoplasm in the leptomeninx. After a strong rise in intracranial pressure, the patient died from a bulbar brain syndrome. Microscopy revealed a diffuse

Prediction of the interaction effects Ar+ laser-brain tumours by study of the photoacoustic spectroscopy of cerebral oncotypes.

A preliminary definition of light absorption spectra of brain neoplasm represents a correct approach to the laser therapy of cerebral tumours. The goal should be the identification of those oncotypes more sensive to the laser energy, allowing consequently a dosage of the energy proportional to the light absorption coefficient, reducing any side effects. With this purpose the coefficients of light-absorption of 63 different brain tumours have been analyzed and defined by means of photocoustic spectrometry. The study has been focused at wavelength of the Ar+ laser (4,600-6,000 A). The results sh

Epidermal growth factor binding in intracranial neoplasms: preliminary biochemical and clinicopathological findings.

The binding capacity for epidermal growth factor (EGF) was determined in 34 intracranial neoplasms (14 glioblastoma, seven low-grade gliomas, six meningiomas, and seven others) and four specimens of normal brain by using [I125]EGF. EGF binding and binding affinity of the sites in the tumour and brain samples were compared to placenta and rat liver. All specimens of normal brain were negative. Ten of 14 glioblastoma specimens contained EGF binding (level range 10-39,660 fmol/mg protein), however, ligand binding affinity was high in only three tumours. Only one of nine low-grade gliomas containe

Unusual sites of lung tumor metastases in B6C3F1 mice and F344 rats.

Three male control B6C3F1 mice, one male and one female F344 rat were found to have lung tumours with unusual sites of distant metastases. The neoplasms spread to the regional lymph nodes, left heart, kidney, prostate and testes. One mouse showed metastases to the brain. Each had a metastasizing lung tumor in the medulla and cortex of the right adrenal gland and one neoplasm had spread to the heart, pancreas and kidney.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery for Intracranial Meningiomas.

Meningiomas are thought to originate from the meningothelial cells of the arachnoid mater and are the most common primary brain tumor in adults. Histologically confirmed meningiomas occur with an incidence of 9.12/100,000 population and account for 39% of all primary brain tumors and 54.5% of all non-malignant brain tumors. Risk factors for meningioma include age 65 years and older, female gender, African-American race, history of exposure to head and neck ionizing radiation, and certain genetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis II. Intracranial meningiomas are the most commonly benign, WHO

Neuropathology of Pediatric Brain Tumors: A Concise Review.

Pediatric brain tumors are an incredibly diverse group of neoplasms and neuropathological tumor classification is an essential part of patient care. Classification of pediatric brain tumors has changed considerably in recent years as molecular diagnostics have become incorporated with routine histopathology in the diagnostic process. This article will focus on the fundamental major histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features that neuropathologists use to make an integrated diagnosis of pediatric brain tumors. This concise review will focus on tumors that are integral to the central

Incidence, Prognostic Factors, and Survival Trend in Pineal Gland Tumors: A Population-Based Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Pineal gland tumors are exceedingly rare and account for 0.4-1.0% of brain neoplasms. Their rarity has confounded a clear understanding of the prognostic factors and standards of care for these neoplasms. In this study, we aimed to investigate the incidence, prognostic indicators, and survival trend of tumors emanating from the pineal gland. METHODS: We accessed the Surveillance, Epidemiology, End Results (SEER) Program for pineal gland tumors from 1975-2016. A multivariate Cox regression model was used to investigate the impact of clinicopathological parameters on all-cause mor

Synchronous cerebral and pleural solitary fibrous tumour.

Solitary fibrous tumours of the pleura (SFTPs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms usually originating from the visceral pleura, but they have been reported in many other sites. To the best of our knowledge, this report describes the first known case of synchronous SFTP in the left visceral pleura and brain. The SFTP of the brain was resected via craniotomy, whereas the SFTP of the pleura, widely compressing and displacing the left lower lung lobe, was resected via left thoracotomy.

Hearing loss.

Nearly 30 million Americans have hearing loss. Audiograms are used to determine if hearing loss is sensorineural (SNHL), conductive (CHL), or mixed (MHL). SNHL indicates dysfunction of the cochlea, cochlear nerve, or brain. The study of choice for adults with SNHL is gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, which is used to look for acoustic neuromas, abnormal labyrinth signal intensity or enhancement, and brain disease. In children with SNHL, computed tomography (CT) performed with bone algorithms demonstrates inner ear dysplasias. SNHL from trauma is best evaluated with CT studies. CH

Multicentric glial brain tumors of a varying degree of differentiation in patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is associated with an increased incidence of secondary neoplasms. Primary brain tumors are rarely seen; however, an increased risk relative to the general population has been observed in male patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. A case report of a 62-year-old man with progressive chronic lymphocytic leukemia and pronounced neurologic symptoms is presented. Richter's syndrome or brain infiltration with leukemia cells was clinically suspected and suggested by computed tomography findings. Progression of the neurologic symptoms rapidly continued and the patient

[Intracranial tuberculoma mimicking malignant tumour].

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculous involvement of the central nervous system is uncommon in western countries. Brain tuberculoma is a granulomatous inflammatory process than in rare occasions can simulate a malignant neoplasm. CASE REPORT: A 81-year-old man regarding symptoms of several weeks of evolution of numbness affecting upper limb and right face. The neuroimaging studies showed a left parietal lesion suggestive of a primary malignant tumor. A stereotactic biopsy was performed and the pathological examination showed a brain tuberculoma. The patient was treated with anti-tuberculous drugs. CONCL

A Comprehensive View(COUP D'OEIL) of Brain Tumors from Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: Brain tumors have always fascinated and intrigued histopathologists due to their diverse morphology and rarity. Recent surge in the molecular developments has further posed a challenge in diagnosis especially in a resource limited setting. Therefore, comprehensive tumor registries have become quintessential to compare our existing database with new found knowledge. METHODS: A descriptive retrospective study was carried out on archival data of 5 years in a neuroscience institute. All neurosurgical cases operated with complete clinical history and definitive histopathological diagno

A Comprehensive Review on the Role of MRI in the Assessment of Supratentorial Neoplasms: Comparative Insights Into Adult and Pediatric Cases.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a critical diagnostic tool in assessing supratentorial neoplasms, offering unparalleled detail and specificity in brain imaging. Supratentorial neoplasms in the cerebral hemispheres, basal ganglia, thalamus, and other structures above the tentorium cerebelli present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. These challenges vary notably between adult and pediatric populations due to differences in tumor types, biological behavior, and patient management strategies. This comprehensive review explores the role of MRI in diagnosing, planning treatment,

Embryonal and pineal tumours.

Embryonal and pineal tumours represent a diverse group of central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms. While many of the small round blue cell tumours that make up the embryonal neoplasms share similar histologic qualities, there are several morphologic and cytologic characteristics that are useful in distinguishing different tumour types. Similarly, pineal parenchymal tumours represent clinically diverse tumours, ranging from benign to overtly malignant. The most recent iteration of the World Health Organization Classification of CNS Tumours expanded greatly on the significance of molecular altera

Pleural solitary fibrous tumour with brain metastasis: an aggressive tumour and pathologic conundrum.

Solitary fibrous tumours of the pleura are a rare finding; those with brain metastases are rarer still. Here, we present the evolution of a pleural solitary fibrous tumour in a 70-year-old male treated surgically, and subsequent brain metastasis requiring emergent craniotomy and excision. The patient received adjuvant radiotherapy to the brain and had no recurrence of brain metastases; however, 1 year surveillance imaging demonstrated metastases to the lungs, liver and spleen for which he received chemotherapy but eventually succumbed to the disease process. Solitary fibrous tumours are most o

Brain metastasis in basaloid undifferentiated anal carcinoma: A case report.

Anal cancer is a rare tumor that accounts for 2% of all colorectal neoplasms. The brain is a rarely affected organ. The aim of the present study was to the review the only four cases of anal cancer brain metastases previously published in the literature. In addition, the current study presents the case of a 69-year-old male diagnosed with basaloid undifferentiated carcinoma of the anal canal (stage IV with liver, lung and bone metastasis). Despite the patient's good response to chemotherapy and the achievement of a partial response that was maintained for 14 months, brain metastases developed.

Identification of intracranial liqor metastases of experimental stereotactically implanted brain tumors by the tumor-selective MRI contrast agent MnTPPS.

Two cases of stereotactically induced and spontaneously metastasizing neoplasms in the rat and the cat brain are reported. In the rat, a malignant Schwannoma derived from initially supratentorially implanted RN6 cells developed a second tumor in the posterior cranial fossa. In the cat, a highly malignant polymorphous anaplastic glioma induced by implantation of cloned rat glioma cells (F98) into the left internal capsule developed small tumor cell nests along the ependyma of the ipsilateral ventricle. In precontrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of both cases, the primary tumor was detectab

Central nervous system dysfunction in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Nearly 40% of AIDS patients develop neurological complications during the course of their illness, and about 10% experience neurological symptoms as the initial manifestations of AIDS. The most common neurological complication (14% of AIDS patients) is human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) encephalopathy, but opportunistic viral and nonviral infections and neoplasms are also quite common; the most frequent among these are cryptococcal meningitis, toxoplasmosis, primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, and herpesvirus infections.
