Abnormal brain-stem function (brain-stem auditory evoked response) correlates with acoustic cry features in term infants with hyperbilirubinemia.

We hypothesized that changes in brain-stem auditory evoked responses related to bilirubin would be associated with changes in cry because of the anatomic proximity in the brain stem of cranial nerves 8 (auditory) and 9 to 12 (vagal complex, which controls cry). Brain-stem auditory evoked responses and computerized cry analysis were used to study the concurrent effects of moderate hyperbilirubinemia on auditory function and cry. Fifty term infants were divided equally into two groups on the basis of serum bilirubin concentrations: low (less than 8 mg/dl; 136) mumol/L and moderate (10 to 20 mg/d

[Stereotactic biopsy in the accurate diagnosis of lesions in the brain stem and deep brain].

Objective: To investigate the value of stereotactic biopsy in the accurate diagnosis of lesions in the brain stem and deep brain. Methods: A total of 29 consecutive patients who underwent stereotactic biopsy of brainstem and deep brain lesions between May 2012 and January 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. The Cosman-Roberts-Wells (CRW) stereotactic frame was installed under local anesthesia. Thin-layer CT and MRI scanning were performed. Target coordinates were calculated by inputting CT-MRI data into the radionics surgical planning system. The individualized puncture path was designed accor

Brain Stem Glioma Recurrence: Exploring the Therapeutic Frontiers.

Gliomas of the brainstem represent a small percentage of central nervous system gliomas in adults. Due to the proximity of the tumor to critical structures, radical surgery is highly challenging and limited to selected cases. In addition, postoperative treatments, which become exclusive to non-operable patients, do not guarantee satisfactory disease control, making the progression of the disease inevitable. Currently, there is a lack of therapeutic options to control tumor growth after the diagnosis of recurrence. The rarity of these tumors, their distinct behavioral characteristics, and the l

Stem Cell Therapy for Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury.

There has been a growing interest in the potential of stem cell transplantation as therapy for pediatric brain injuries. Studies in pre-clinical models of pediatric brain injury such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) have contributed to our understanding of the roles of endogenous stem cells in repair processes and functional recovery following brain injury, and the effects of exogenous stem cell transplantation on recovery from brain injury. Although only a handful of studies have evaluated these effects in models of pediatric TBI, many studies have evaluated

Global multisensory reorganization after vestibular brain stem stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with acute central vestibular syndrome suffer from vertigo, spontaneous nystagmus, postural instability with lateral falls, and tilts of visual vertical. Usually, these symptoms compensate within months. The mechanisms of compensation in vestibular infarcts are yet unclear. This study focused on structural changes in gray and white matter volume that accompany clinical compensation. METHODS: We studied patients with acute unilateral brain stem infarcts prospectively over 6 months. Structural changes were compared between the acute phase and follow-up with a group of health

Optimizing Stem Cell Therapy after Ischemic Brain Injury.

Stem cells have been used for regenerative and therapeutic purposes in a variety of diseases. In ischemic brain injury, preclinical studies have been promising, but have failed to translate results to clinical trials. We aimed to explore the application of stem cells after ischemic brain injury by focusing on topics such as delivery routes, regeneration efficacy, adverse effects, and in vivo potential optimization. PUBMED and Web of Science were searched for the latest studies examining stem cell therapy applications in ischemic brain injury, particularly after stroke or cardiac arrest, with a

Neural Stem Cell Dysfunction in Human Brain Disorders.

Neural stem cells (NSCs) give rise to the entire nervous system. Animal models suggest that defects in NSC proliferation and differentiation contribute to several brain disorders (e.g., microcephaly, macrocephaly, autism, schizophrenia, and Huntington's disease). However, animal models of such diseases do not fully recapitulate all disease-related phenotypes because of substantial differences in brain development between rodents and humans. Therefore, additional human-based evidence is required to understand the mechanisms that are involved in the development of neurological diseases that resu

Cytokine immunopathogenesis of enterovirus 71 brain stem encephalitis.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is one of the most important causes of herpangina and hand, foot, and mouth disease. It can also cause severe complications of the central nervous system (CNS). Brain stem encephalitis with pulmonary edema is the severe complication that can lead to death. EV71 replicates in leukocytes, endothelial cells, and dendritic cells resulting in the production of immune and inflammatory mediators that shape innate and acquired immune responses and the complications of disease. Cytokines, as a part of innate immunity, favor the development of antiviral and Th1 immune responses. Cy

Hemorrhage in brain stem cavernoma presenting with torticollis.

Spasmodic torticollis due to an identified focal brain stem lesion is uncommon and abrupt-onset spasmodic torticollis due to midbrain lesions in humans is rarely reported. A 9-year-old female child who had fallen off a bicycle and had lost consciousness for 10 min, vomiting 2-3 times, developed acute torticollis immediately after the injury. Examinations suggested hemorrhage in brain stem cavernoma. A search of the literature written in English revealed that this type of presentation has not been reported previously.

Brain stem and cerebellar findings in Joubert syndrome.

Joubert syndrome is often missed clinically and radiologically if not enough attention is paid to its subtle and variable clinical presentation and the imaging findings in the posterior fossa. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the brain stem and cerebellar imaging findings in Joubert syndrome. Awareness of the clinical and neuroimaging findings in Joubert syndrome and maintenance of a high index of suspicion are essential to correctly diagnose this rare congenital malformation.

Immunomodulatory neural stem cells for brain tumour therapy.

Advances in the understanding of stem cells have enabled the development of novel therapies for brain tumours. Neural stem cells (NSCs) possess the ability to migrate throughout the CNS. By exploiting the tropism of NSCs to various neural pathologies (e.g., glioma, degeneration, stroke and so on) and the delivery of various immunomodulatory cytokines, new treatments for brain tumours have been investigated. These new strategies offer significantly more specificity than existing treatment regimens, such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. As methods in isolating and culturing NSCs are bette

Application of stem cell transplant for brain tumors.

Brain tumors are the second most common malignancy in children and the most common solid tumor. The majority of children are treated with surgery alone or in combination with radiation and/or chemotherapy. Recently investigators have used high dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue (ASCR) in patients with malignant brain tumors. This approach has been most successful in chemosensitive tumors including medulloblastoma, supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (SPNET) and central nervous system germ cell tumors (CNS GCT). In addition, the use of high dose chemotherapy has enab

Visuospatial hemi-inattention following cerebellar/brain stem bleeding.

Neglect is a unilateral lack of responsiveness to stimuli caused by visuospatial hemi-inattention, a unilateral representation deficit and/or a unilateral hypokinesia. It results most frequently from right-hemisphere brain damage, particularly of the parietal lobe but also of the frontal cortex, the basal ganglia, the thalamus, and recently it has also been described after a cerebellar lesion. We report a patient with right-sided bleeding of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery, who developed a left-sided visual hemi-inattention. She had no visual field defects, yet she had problems detect
