High frequency oscillations in human memory and cognition: a neurophysiological substrate of engrams?

Despite advances in understanding the cellular and molecular processes underlying memory and cognition, and recent successful modulation of cognitive performance in brain disorders, the neurophysiological mechanisms remain underexplored. High frequency oscillations beyond the classic electroencephalogram spectrum have emerged as a potential neural correlate of fundamental cognitive processes. High frequency oscillations are detected in the human mesial temporal lobe and neocortical intracranial recordings spanning gamma/epsilon (60-150 Hz), ripple (80-250 Hz) and higher frequency ranges. Complexity and schizophrenia.

Complexity estimators have been broadly utilized in schizophrenia investigation. Early studies reported increased complexity in schizophrenia patients, associated with a higher variability or "irregularity" of their brain signals. However, further investigations showed reduced complexities, thus introducing a clear divergence. Nowadays, both increased and reduced complexity values are reported. The explanation of such divergence is a critical issue to understand the role of complexity measures in schizophrenia research. Considering previous arguments a complementary hypothesis is advanced: if

Decrease in serum cortisol during yoga exercise is correlated with alpha wave activation.

We examined changes in brain waves and blood levels of serum cortisol during yoga exercise in 7 yoga instructors and found that alpha waves increased and serum cortisol decreased. These two measures were negatively correlated (r = -.83). Comparison with a control group of nonpractitioners is desirable.

Inroads into epilepsy through high-frequency oscillations: Achievements and benchmark areas for improvement.

High-frequency oscillations (HFOs) were discovered more than 20 years ago, and since then they have been studied intensively in the context of epilepsy. HFOs encompass a broad spectrum of oscillations, typically ranging from 80 Hz to several kHz, that include both normal and pathological oscillations, documented in people with epilepsy and animal models. HFOs have drawn considerable attention due to their prominent roles in epileptogenesis, ictogenesis, and functional organization of epileptic tissue. We provide historical background on HFOs in epilepsy and summarize the current state of knowl

Resting-state EEG activity in depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Depression is a highly prevalent and disabling disorder affecting approximately 5% of the adult population worldwide. Despite its impact, the underlying pathophysiology remains insufficiently understood, and current treatments are only partially effective. Understanding electrophysiological correlates of depression offers promise for a better grasp of the underlying brain mechanisms and might even guide novel treatment approaches, including neuromodulation. EEG is particularly attractive for this purpose due to its wide availability, cost-effectiveness, and potential for direct neuromodulatory

Role of specific interictal and ictal EEG onset patterns.

The objective of this review is to present the role of specific interictal and ictal EEG onset patterns during scalp video-EEG monitoring. Specific non-epileptiform abnormalities include temporal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (TIRDA) and temporal intermittent rhythmic theta activity (TIRTA) indicating a temporal lobe seizure onset, while interictal rhythmical midline theta activity occurs more frequently in frontal epilepsy. Specific interictal epileptiform abnormalities comprise Type 1 spikes pointing towards a mesial and Type 2spikes indicating a lateral temporal irritative zone. Unil

Concepts of epilepsy.

The word "epilepsy" refers to a group of disorders characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures. Differential diagnosis first requires distinction between epileptic seizures and the many systemic, neurologic, and psychiatric disorders associated with paroxysmal behaviors that might be mistaken for epilepsy. By definition, isolated epileptic seizures that occur as a natural reaction to a noxious insult are not sufficient evidence for a diagnosis of epilepsy. Many factors contribute to the appearance of an epileptic condition, including nonspecific predisposing factors that alter the threshold

Cardiometabolic Risk and Structural Brain Development in a Large Community-Based US Cohort.

Cardiometabolic risk factors are already detectable in childhood and adolescence, but their relation to the developing brain remains unclear. The current study tested whether poorer cardiometabolic health is associated with brain structure and microstructure development in 10-17-year-old youth. Using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, we analysed data from 3527 participants with 4433 observations across three waves (single wave: n = 2745; two waves: n = 658 participants; three waves: n = 124 participants). We related anthropometric (body-mass index, waist circumference), cardiov

Synchrony between brain age and internalising and externalising symptoms across adolescence.

Adolescence is a period of rapid neurobiological and behavioural change, yet how brain maturation deviations relate to psychopathology remains unclear. Here, we show, using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, that deviations in brain age are coupled with internalising and externalising symptom development across adolescence. Combining multimodal brain age prediction across four waves (ages ~8.3-17.5) with bivariate latent growth curve models of ten symptom waves, we found coordinated nonlinear development between brain maturation and symptoms: adolescents whose brains i

[Changes in short latency SEPs (S-SEPs) to median nerve stimulation in brain dead patients].

Short latency SEPs (S-SEPs) to median nerve stimulation consist of positive waves of P1, P2, P3 and P4, followed by negative waves of N 16 and N 19. These potential reflect activities of peripheral nerve, dorsal column of the cervical cord and medial lemniscus. The origins of these waves are considered as follows, P1--peripheral part of the brachial plexus, P2--the entry into the spinal cord or the dorsal column, P3--dorsal column nucleus or upper cervical cord, P4--the medial lemniscus, N 16--rostral brain stem or the thalamus, and N 19--thalamocortical projection or the cortex. [The characteristics of blast traumatic brain injury].

With the increase in terrorist activity in recent times, the number of blast injuries has also increased in civilian and military settings. In a recent war, the number of patients who suffered blast traumatic brain injury (bTBI) increased, so treatment of bTBI is currently a very important issue. Blast injury is complicated and can be divided into 4 categories: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary. Primary blast injury results from exposure to blast waves; secondary blast injury is trauma caused by fragments of explosive devices; tertiary blast injury is the result of collision with ob

An in vitro model of temporal enhancement of epithelium barrier permeability by low-energy shock waves without contrast agents.

One of the commonly used techniques for drug delivery is to temporarily increase the permeability of tissue barriers. Acoustic energies such as ultrasound and shock waves are known to modulate tissue permeability. Recently, it was found that shock waves modulate the blood-brain barrier in the rat brain without injection of contrast agents such as microbubbles. This finding implies that modulation of other tissue barriers by shock wave exposure without contrast agents may be possible. To examine whether the modulation is also possible with other tissue barriers, we here investigated whether sho

Design of Mechanics-Guided Helmet Pad and Its Protection Performance Against the Blast Shock Waves.

The blast shock waves generated by the explosion are severe threat to soldiers on the battlefield, while the helmets currently equipped for the soldiers cannot offer sufficient blast protection. Some helmet pads have been developed to improve the protection performance of the combat helmets against shock waves. However, it remains unclear how to design the helmet pads to protect the head more effectively against blast shock waves. This study aims to design a new mechanics-guided helmet pad and evaluate its protection performance by numerical simulations. The design of the new helmet pad is gui

Non-invasive EEG evaluation in epilepsy diagnosis.

The EEG is an invaluable tool in the diagnosis of epilepsy which guides clinical management. It helps to determine if attacks are of epileptic origin, allows the estimation of the recurrence risk after a first seizure, aids in the diagnosis of the epilepsy syndrome and represents the gold standard in the presurgical evaluation of epilepsy. The EEG can also detect subclinical seizures as a cause of coma. In this review we discuss the sensitivity and specificity of the EEG, present the EEG findings and their significance in different epilepsy syndromes including focal and generalized epilepsies

[Prognostic evaluation of severe brain damage by auditory brainstem evoked potentials (BAEPs)].

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (BAEPs) reflect activities of the brainstem auditory pathway and the influence of activities of structures surrounding the pathway. It is said that BAEPs are reliable in predicting the outcome of patients with severe brain damage. The author studied the relationship between initial BAEP findings, particularly interpeak latencies of waves I to V and waves III to V, and mortality as based on the cause of each disorder. BAEPs were sequentially recorded in 241 cases of various neurological diseases resulting in severe brain damage (GCS less than 8) during the f

Effect of a unilateral cortical lesion on the monoamine content in the cat brain.

The serotonin and noradrenalin content in the cerebral cortex, hypothalamus, and mesencephalon was investigated spectrofluorometrically in 12 cats on the 5th-6th day after the production of a pathological focus in the region of the occipital cortex. Diffuse changes of brain activity were recorded on the EEG at this period: spike-like waves and slow waves of increased amplitude. A considerable increase in the serotonin concentration was observed in the cortex, with the effect predominant in the region immediately adjacent to the pathological focus. A tendency for the serotonin level to fall was

Spectrum power and brain functional connectivity of different EEG frequency bands in attention network tests.

There have been many previous studies on brain electrical activity and attention function, but the research on observing the cognitive function of attention from frequency brain electrical indicators remains insufficient. This study proposed an attentional network test (ANT) of Chinese version and used frequency analysis methods to observe the power spectrum activity and functional connectivity of delta (δ), theta (θ), alpha (α) bands of EEG signals to further understand their relationship with attention networks. The attentional network test was composed of alerting network, orienting network

Generalized and Lateralized Rhythmic Patterns.

The relationship between generalized and lateralized rhythmic delta activity (RDA) and seizures is more ambiguous than the relationship between periodic discharges and seizures. Although frontally predominant generalized RDA is not associated with seizures, occipitally predominant RDA may be associated with the absence of seizures. Lateralized RDA seems to be more strongly associated with the presence of seizure activity. Appropriate recognition of generalized RDA and lateralized rhythmic delta activity may be confounded by benign etiologies of RDA, such as phi rhythm, slow alpha variant, subc
