Candida albicans is a fungus that is predominantly detected in the oral cavity and causes opportunistic infections. Among the elderly, a decline in the host's resistance to pathogens due to immunosenescence makes them more susceptible to oral candidiasis, which eventually may progress to systemic candidiasis. Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) is a component found in Brassicaceae plants (such as wasabi), which possesses strong antibacterial properties and is used as a food preservative. In this study, the effects of AITC on C. albicans were investigated though: (1) inhibition of growth and biofilm fo

Chromosome organization and evolution in the Brassicaceae family was studied using comparative linkage mapping. A total of 160 mapped Arabidopsis thaliana DNA fragments identified 284 homologous loci covering 751 cM in Brassica nigra. The data support that modern diploid Brassica species are descended from a hexaploid ancestor, and that the A. thaliana genome is similar in structure and complexity to those of each of the hypothetical diploid progenitors of the proposed hexaploid. Thus, the Brassica lineage probably went through a triplication after the divergence of the lineages leading to A.

Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) play a crucial role in plant reproduction, yet their mobility and function remain incompletely understood. We report that a large proportion of siRNAs found in pollen of Capsella rubella relies on mobile siRNAs from maternal sporophytic tissues, highlighting the importance of non-cell-autonomous siRNAs in male gametophyte development. Unlike tapetal siRNAs, which guide DNA methylation and require CLASSY3 and DNA-dependent RNA polymerase IV (Pol IV) activity in the tapetum, we found that Pol IV-dependent mobile siRNAs (PMsiRNAs) mainly function post-transcription

A vast array of herbivorous arthropods live with symbiotic microorganisms. However, little is known about the nature and functional mechanism of bacterial effects on plant defense responses towards herbivores. We explored the role of microbes present in extracts of oral secretion (OS) isolated from larvae of Spodoptera litura, a generalist herbivore, in phytohormone signaling-dependent defense responses in Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis). In response to mechanical damage (MD) with application of bacteria-free OS (OS- ) prepared by sterilization or filtration of OS, Arabidopsis leaves exhibi

Lepidium meyenii (Walp.), commonly called maca, is an Andean crop belonging to the Brassicaceae family. Maca hypocotils are habitually consumed as customary food as well as traditional remedies for pathological conditions such as infertility. Moreover, the characterization of maca extracts revealed the presence of compounds that are able to modulate the nervous system. Aimed to evaluate the efficacy of L. meyenii in persistent pain, the present study analyzed the effects of a commercial root extract from maca in different animal models reproducing the most common causes of chronic painful path

The dagger nematode Xiphinema index has a high economic impact in vineyards by direct pathogenicity and above all by transmitting the Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV). Agrochemicals have been largely employed to restrict the spread of GFLV by reducing X. index populations but are now banned. As an alternative to nematicides, the use of fallow plants between two successive vine crops was assessed. We selected plant species adapted to vineyard soils and exhibiting negative impact on nematodes and we evaluated their antagonistic effect on X. index in greenhouse using artificially infested soil, and

This study investigated the antioxidant capacity and enzyme inhibitory activities of different phenolics and phenolic acid extracts using n-hexane and methanol obtained from six taxa of Alyssum L. and Arabis L. The crude extract exhibited the highest total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid (TF) contents, and powerful antioxidant capacities and enzyme inhibitory activities, the highest being observed in Arabis alpina subsp. alpina and Arabis ionocalyx. Soluble free, ester-, and glycoside-conjugated phenolic acid forms exhibited significant enzyme inhibitory activities, including α-amyl

The invasion of non-native plants can alter the diversity and activity of soil microorganisms and nutrient cycling within forests. We used field studies to analyze the impact of a successful invasive groundcover, Alliaria petiolata, on fungal diversity, soil nutrient availability, and pH in five northeastern US forests. We also used laboratory and greenhouse experiments to test three mechanisms by which A. petiolata may alter soil processes: (1) the release of volatile, cyanogenic glucosides from plant tissue; (2) the exudation of plant secondary compounds from roots; and (3) the decomposition

Camelina seeds are rich in α-linolenic acid (ALA), but also contain small amounts of erucic acid, which is considered toxic to laboratory rats. This experiment compares the dietary inclusion of camelina oil to that of flaxseed oil, a well-known source of ALA, and evaluates their effects on the nutritional and metabolic status of growing rats. The oils were chemically analyzed and incorporated into a semi-purified diet for 4 weeks. The experiment was divided into 3 groups: PO (control-fed palm oil with a trace of ALA), FO (comparative-fed flaxseed oil), and CO (experimental-fed camelina seed oi

In the United States, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in adults is ≈14%. The mainstay of therapy for chronic kidney disease is angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers, but many patients with chronic kidney disease still progress to end-stage kidney disease. Increased oxidative stress is a major molecular underpinning of chronic kidney disease progression. In humans, a common deletion variant of the glutathione-S-transferase μ-1 (GSTM1) gene, the GSTM1 null allele (GSTM1(0)), results in decreased GSTM1 enzymatic activity and is associated with higher l

Several epidemiological studies have demonstrated that a diet with high contents of cruciferous vegetables (which belong to the Brassicaceae family) may reduce the incidence of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. However, some authors have postulated that they might bring about toxic effects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of chronic administration of Diplotaxis tenuifolia (wild rocket), a species found in Argentina, concerning its putative genotoxicity or antigenotoxicity against the DNA damage inducer cyclophosphamide, and its ability to modulate the hepatic ex

Fruit and vegetable by-products can be interpreted more usefully as postharvest crop-derived tissue fractions than as generic waste streams or sources of recoverable compounds. This integrative review synthesizes evidence on plant tissues, postharvest quality, stabilization, safety, and analytical characterization to develop a tissue-to-raw-material framework for plant-based food development. The framework begins with crop source, cultivar or maturity, organ/tissue identity, and postharvest history, and then links these variables to stabilization, safety screening, analytical evidence, intende

Whole-genome duplication (WGD) is often considered as either an adaptive dead-end or a facilitator of rapid adaptation under changing environments. How diploids vs tetraploids out of WGD respond to selection remains, however, poorly understood. Using whole-genome sequence data and phenotypic evidence from transplant experiments of diploid and autotetraploid populations of Biscutella laevigata (Brassicaceae) sampled at low and high elevation in a factorial design, we here assessed how genomic and phenotypic variation responded to selection across elevation in each ploidal level. While all popul

Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, the causal agent of black rot, is one of the most important bacterial pathogens affecting Brassicaceae crops worldwide. Its seed-borne nature, multiple routes of dissemination, and limited availability of resistant cultivars make black rot difficult to manage and underscore the importance of early and reliable pathogen detection. This review summarizes current knowledge on the epidemiology of X. campestris pv. campestris, with emphasis on advances in conventional and molecular approaches used for its detection and characterization, as well as on the curre

Maca (Lepidium meyenii, Lepidium peruvianum) is part of the Brassicaceae family and grows at high altitudes in the Peruvian Andes mountain range (3500-5000 m). Historically, it has been used as a nutrient-dense food and for its medicinal properties, primarily in enhancing energy and fertility. Scientific research has validated these traditional uses and other clinical applications by elucidating maca's mechanisms of action, nutrition, and phytochemical content. However, research over the last twenty years has identified up to seventeen different colors (phenotypes) of maca. The color, hypocoty

The aim of this work is the development of a suitable method to extract and detect zinc-bound compounds from cabbage, broccoli and kale (family Brassicaceae, species oleracea) using solid phase extraction (SPE) and size-exclusion chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SEC-ICP-MS). Tris [2-Amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol]/hydrochloric acid (Tris/HCl) or ammonium nitrate were used as extractants added to the freeze-dried samples, which were then sonicated and centrifuged. An enzymatic mixture was added to the extracts and then incubated for 5- and 18 h prior to anal

The global burden of genitourinary diseases is increasing worldwide, highlighting the need to identify new approaches for their prevention and treatment. In this context, polyphenols, isothiocyanates derived from plants of the Brassicaceae and Moringaceae botanical families, along with their natural sources, represent promising strategies, as they exhibit several health-promoting properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic effects. However, a comprehensive overview of their benefits in the genitourinary system is currently unavailable. In this paper, we performed a
