The association between mammographic breast density and breast cancer risk may be the result of genetic and/or environmental factors that determine breast density. We reasoned that if the genetic factors that underlie breast density increase breast cancer risk, then breast density should be associated with family history of breast cancer. Therefore, we determined the association between mammographic density and family history of breast cancer among women in the San Francisco Mammography Registry. Mammographic density was classified using the four BI-RADS criteria: 1 = almost entirely fatty, 2

This study reports on 110 consecutive patients, mean age 59 years, operated on for partial mastectomy and axillary dissection. Radiotherapy of 50 Gy was administered to 75 of the patients. Most tumours were T1 tumours and all patients were NO. Lymphoedema is defined as an increase in arm volume > 10% and impaired shoulder mobility as an impairment of 15 degrees compared with the preoperative value. After operation, 21 patients developed lymphoedema, 17 in the radiotherapy group and 4 in the group without radiotherapy; 49% of the patients had reduced shoulder mobility, and of these, 57% were in

Approximately 1.5 million women in the United States currently have breast implants. The majority were placed for cosmetic augmentation, but 20% were placed for reconstruction after the loss or deformity of a breast. The augmented breast is a challenge to the mammographer. Many of the palpable and mammographically detected abnormalities in these patients are related to the implant itself. Since, however, there is breast tissue present with cosmetic augmentation, the full range of fibrocystic and neoplastic conditions that can affect the breast may be seen. The presence of the implant makes ima

Assessment of cancer risk, particularly with a view toward targeting strategies for prevention, is a recent development. The future will see the garnering of more specific information about determinants of risk and their interaction with screening prevention and therapeutic modalities. We are not a full professional generation removed from a time when the question of malignancy in the breast was absolute, yes or no. Now special types of breast cancer are recognized that pose little threat to life, while some benign conditions indicate greatly increased risk of death from cancer. Comparisons of

From 1979-89, 211 women with cancer mammae were irradiated at the Norwegian Radium Hospital after breast-conserving surgery performed at different hospitals in Norway. 181 of these patients were called in for re-examination to check the procedures for treatment and the cosmetic results. Only 37% of the patients had undergone mammography prior to surgery and 48% of the patients had had two or more operations before the irradiation. The cosmetic results were not very satisfactory in 45% of the patients. Reduced cosmesis was mainly due to less than optimal surgery. We propose better standardisati

The authors report a case of breast cancer developing 7 years after insertion of a breast prosthesis. This patient was 45 years old at the time of this discovery and had received low dose radiation during childhood for a haemolymphangioma of the homolateral axillary region. The possible factors predisposing development of cancer are discussed: haemolymphangioma, low dose axillary irradiation during childhood, peri-prosthetic fibrous capsule. These various points are examined in the light of data from the literature. The conclusions recall the necessity for clinical and radiological follow-up o

The relationship between breast self examination (BSE) and breast cancer stage at diagnosis was examined in 616 women aged 15-59 years. Differences in tumour characteristics between those not practising BSE and those practising but not taught were small and inconstant. However, women who had both practised and had been taught BSE had more favourable tumours than the non-practising group. The difference was most marked in terms of tumour size and the involvement of axillary nodes. The proportions of women in the non-BSE and taught-BSE groups with each characteristic were respectively: size less

BACKGROUND: 'Breast Implant Illness' (BII) refers to non-specific constitutional, rheumatic, mental and cognitive symptoms experienced by women with silicone breast implants (SBIs). This potential late effect of SBIs challenges the safety of SBI-use in oncologic breast reconstruction (BR). Previous studies on BII mainly focused on women with cosmetic SBIs. It remains unclear whether symptoms reported in this population differ from those reported by breast cancer (BC) survivors with SBI-based BR.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this Society of Breast Imaging (SBI)-member survey study were to assess the current imaging patterns for evaluation of symptomatic and asymptomatic breast implant integrity, including modalities used and imaging intervals.
METHODS: A 12-question survey assessing the frequency of imaging modalities used to evaluate implant integrity, approximate number of breast implant integrity studies requested per month, intervals of integrity studies, and referring provider and radiology practice characteristics was distributed to members of the SBI.
RESULTS: The survey respo

OBJECTIVES: Abbreviated breast MRI (AB-MRI) was introduced to reduce both examination and image reading times and to improve cost-effectiveness of breast cancer screening. The aim of this model-based economic study was to analyze the cost-effectiveness of full protocol breast MRI (FB-MRI) vs. AB-MRI in screening women with dense breast tissue for breast cancer.
METHODS: Decision analysis and a Markov model were designed to model the cumulative costs and effects of biennial screening in terms of quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) from a US healthcare system perspective. Model input parameters

Little is known about knowledge levels regarding hereditary breast cancer among breast cancer survivors. This study explored, among women with early-onset breast cancer (<50 years): 1) knowledge regarding breast cancer risk factors and hereditary breast cancer; and 2) differences in knowledge based on risk for hereditary disease. Participants recruited from 34 Virginia hospitals responded to two questionnaires. The Family History Questionnaire assessed risk for hereditary breast cancer. The Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs Questionnaire evaluated knowledge of general breast cancer risk factor

The case of a 32-year-old female patient with multiple malformations (hare-lip, polythelia, fibroadenoma in an accessory mammary gland) and independent of these, another fibroadenoma in the breast is reported. The fibroadenoma developing in the accessory breast around the vulva, diagnosed by means of aspiration biopsy cytology, should be payed special attention. This case also confirms the applicability in preoperative diagnostics of aspiration biopsy cytology, a method which has proved to be effective for years.

BACKGROUND: Previous breast reduction surgery almost always requires incisions on the breast, even if skin removal is not necessary, while East Asian patients prefer not to have scars on their breasts.
OBJECTIVES: The author describes their experience with axillary approach breast mammaplasty (AABM), a novel technique for breast reduction.
METHODS: A total of 35 women (70 breasts) who underwent AABM were evaluated in a prospective study. Very limited skin undermining and partial excision of the base of the breast cone by using glandular resection with or without liposuction ensured maximal b

BACKGROUND: Mammographic breast density (BD) has garnered clinical interest due to its impact on breast cancer (BC) risk, sensitivity of mammographic screening, and tumour size at presentation. There is conflicting evidence as to BD's effect on re-excisions and recurrence following breast conserving surgery (BCS). We hypothesize that increasing BD may obscure disease, resulting in an underestimation of the extent of disease, and a greater risk of re-excision and local recurrence following BCS for invasive BC.
METHODS: A retrospective, population-based review of patients undergoing BCS for inv

INTRODUCTION: Benign breast disease (BBD) and high mammographic breast density (MBD) are prevalent and independent risk factors for invasive breast cancer. It has been suggested that temporal changes in MBD may impact future invasive breast cancer risk, but this has not been studied among women with BBD.
METHODS: We undertook a nested case-control study within a cohort of 15,395 women with BBD in Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW; 1970-2012, followed through mid-2015). Cases (n = 261) developed invasive breast cancer > 1 year after BBD diagnosis, whereas controls (n = 249) did not have breast

Background Mammographic breast density and benign breast disease are strong risk factors for breast cancer. Accordingly, women with both risk factors may have a markedly high risk for developing breast cancer. Purpose To investigate the risk of breast cancer associated with the combination of mammographic density and benign breast disease in Korean women, where population-based mammographic breast cancer screening is provided for all women aged at least 40 years. Materials and Methods This is a retrospective analysis of data from a nationwide breast cancer screening program linked with the nat

BACKGROUND: Increasing number of patients with preexisting breast implants desire breast conservation therapy for breast cancer. There is paucity of comparative data on tumor margins and re-excisions in these patients. High re-excision rates up to 25% have been reported in breast conservation therapy patients; efforts to obtain cosmesis and avoid implant rupture might increase this further. We analyzed tumor margins, re-excision rates, and recurrence in previously augmented versus non-augmented patients undergoing lumpectomy for breast cancer. We preserved preexisting implants if feasible with

BACKGROUND: Although breast-conserving surgery is oncologically safe for women with early-stage breast cancer, mastectomy rates are increasing. The objective of this study was to examine the role of breast reconstruction in the surgical management of unilateral early-stage breast cancer.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of women diagnosed with unilateral early-stage breast cancer (1998 to 2011) identified in the National Cancer Data Base was conducted. Rates of breast-conserving surgery, unilateral and bilateral mastectomy with contralateral prophylactic procedures (per 1000 early-stage
