A relatively large number of women in their 40s with high-density breasts, in which it can be difficult to detect lesions, are encountered in mammography cancer screenings in Japan. Here, we retrospectively investigated factors related to breast density. Two hundred women (40-49 years old) were examined at the screening center in our hospital. Multivariate analysis showed that factors such as small abdominal circumference, high HDL cholesterol, and no history of childbirth were related to high breast density in women in their 40s undergoing mammography. Other non-mammographic screening methods

PURPOSE: Previous studies of breast tissue gene expression have shown that the extratumoral microenvironment has substantial variability across individuals, some of which can be attributed to epidemiologic factors. To evaluate how mammographic density and breast tissue composition relate to extratumoral microenvironment gene expression, we used data on 121 patients with breast cancer from the population-based Polish Women's Breast Cancer Study.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Breast cancer cases were classified on the basis of a previously reported, biologically defined extratumoral gene expression sign

BACKGROUND: We investigated associations of known breast cancer risk factors with breast density, a well-established and very strong predictor of breast cancer risk.
METHODS: This nested case-control study included breast cancer-free women, 265 with high and 860 with low breast density. Women were required to be 40-80 years old and should have a body mass index (BMI) <35 at the time of the index mammogram. Information on covariates was obtained from annual questionnaires.
RESULTS: In the overall analysis, breast density was inversely associated with BMI at mammogram (P for trend<0.001), and

This study investigated a series of deep learning (DL) models for the objective assessment of four categories of mammographic breast density (e.g., fatty, scattered, heterogeneously dense, and extremely dense). A retrospective analysis was conducted using data collected from Taizhou Cancer Hospital over a period from January 2015 to December 2020. The dataset included mammograms from 9,621 women, totaling 57,282 images. The dataset was divided into training, validation, and test sets at a ratio of 7:2:1. Four DL models were employed, with Average Precision (AP) served as the primary evaluation

High mammographic density is a well-established risk factor for breast cancer; however, data from Black women are limited. It is largely unknown how mammographic density is associated with breast cancer subtypes among Black women. We examined the association between percent mammographic density (PMD) and breast cancer risk among participants in the Black Women's Health Study. Digital screening mammograms were available for 363 cases and 5541 non-cases. Cumulus software was used to assess PMD. We used inverse probability of sampling weights and Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for age

PURPOSE: Breast density assessment is an essential component of risk-stratified and supplemental breast cancer screenings for the future generation. International collaborative research and cooperation are required to determine global trends and differences in mammographic breast density. Due to the cost and energy associated with the use of film or digital mammograms, international breast density assessment studies tend to be challenging. A novel breast density assessment method using portable document format (PDF) is currently explored and the justification is needed. This study aimed to inv

BACKGROUND: Breast density information aims to increase awareness of breast density and its risks and to foster more informed future breast screening decisions among women with dense breasts. We explored associations between such information and outcomes including anxiety, confusion, or feeling informed, and whether they varied by race/ethnicity or literacy, or differentially affected future mammography plans.
METHODS: A national telephone survey of a diverse sample of women previously informed of personal breast density (N = 1,322) assessed reactions to receipt of breast density information

Prior studies in the Child Health and Development Studies (CHDS) found in utero exposure to the pesticide, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), increased breast cancer risk by age 52. Mammographic density is considered a primary risk factor for breast cancer. We conducted a study of 309 daughters from the CHDS to examine in utero DDT exposure and mammographic density in midlife. Among daughters with high (>75th percentile) exposure to p,p'-Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), p,p'-DDT was significantly correlated with increased dense area and percent density regardless of her body mass in

PURPOSE: We conducted a study of women recruited at Meharry Medical College, a historically black medical school, to investigate the relationship between diabetes and mammographic breast density.
METHODS: A total of 476 women completed in-person interviews, body measurements, and full-field digital mammograms on a Hologic mammography unit from December 2011 to February 2014. Average percent breast density for the left and right breasts combined was estimated using Quantra, an automated algorithm for volumetric assessment of breast tissue. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes was determined by se

A high mammographic breast density is considered to be a risk factor for breast cancer. However, only a small number of studies on the association between breast density and lifestyle have been performed. A cross-sectional study was performed using a survey with 29 questions on life history and lifestyle. The breast density on mammography was classified into 4 categories following the BI-RADS criteria. The subjects were 522 women with no medical history of breast cancer. The mean age was 53.3 years old. On multivariate analysis, only BMI was a significant factor determining breast density in p

Mammographic density (MD), representing connective and epithelial tissue (fibroglandular tissue, FGT) is a major risk factor for breast cancer. In an analysis of an autopsy series (Bartow SA, Pathak DR, Mettler FA. Radiographic microcalcification and parenchymal patterns as indicators of histologic "high-risk" benign breast disease. Mammographic density refers to radiologically dense breast tissue, and reflects variations in the tissue composition of the breast. It is positively associated with collagen and epithelial and non-epithelial cells, and negatively associated with fat. There is extensive evidence that mammographic density is a risk factor for breast cancer, independent of other risk factors, and is associated with large relative and attributable risks for the disease. The epidemiology of mammographic density, notably the inverse association with age, is consistent with it being a marker of susceptibility to brea

OBJECTIVE: To compare image quality and breast density of two reconstruction methods, the widely-used filtered-back projection (FBP) reconstruction and the iterative heuristic Bayesian inference reconstruction (Bayesian inference reconstruction plus the method of total variation applied, HBI).
METHODS: Thirty-two clinical DBT data sets with malignant and benign findings, n = 27 and 17, respectively, were reconstructed using FBP and HBI. Three experienced radiologists evaluated the images independently using a 5-point visual grading scale and classified breast density according to the American

BACKGROUND: Mammographic density has been shown to be a strong independent predictor of breast cancer and a causative factor in reducing the sensitivity of mammography. There remain questions as to the use of mammographic density information in the context of screening and risk management, and of the association with cancer in populations known to be at increased risk of breast cancer.
AIM: To assess the association of breast density with presence of cancer by measuring mammographic density visually as a percentage, and with two automated volumetric methods, Quantra™ and VolparaDensity™.

INTRODUCTION: Mammographic density is a strong breast cancer risk factor and a major determinant of screening sensitivity. However, there is currently no validated estimation method for full-field digital mammography (FFDM).
METHODS: The performance of three area-based approaches (BI-RADS, the semi-automated Cumulus, and the fully-automated ImageJ-based approach) and three fully-automated volumetric methods (Volpara, Quantra and single energy x-ray absorptiometry (SXA)) were assessed in 3168 FFDM images from 414 cases and 685 controls. Linear regression models were used to assess associations

PURPOSE: Breast density is a key factor that influences mammography interpretation and is a major source of heterogeneity in multicenter datasets. Such heterogeneity poses challenges for collaborative machine learning across institutions, particularly in federated learning (FL). We aim to evaluate the impact of breast density-induced heterogeneity on FL for mammography image classification and to assess the robustness of common FL algorithms in realistic clinical settings.
APPROACH: We conducted experiments on mammography datasets under two scenarios: (1) a strongly heterogeneous setting wher

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among women worldwide. One major challenge in early and accurate detection is breast density. High breast density not only obscures tumors on current imaging modalities, making them harder to identify, but also significantly increases the likelihood of diagnostic errors, both by medical professionals and automated detection systems. As a result, accurately classifying the breast density is crucial, and can lead to better, more tailored screening approaches and reduce the chances of error. This is especially critical for younger women, wh

BACKGROUND: Steroid hormones influence breast morphology and cellular proliferation and are associated with breast carcinogenesis. However, their associations with mammographic breast density (MBD) are less studied, particularly in premenopausal women. We, therefore, investigated the associations of steroid hormone metabolites with MBD in premenopausal women.
METHODS: Our study included 700 premenopausal women scheduled for screening mammograms. We analyzed 54 steroid hormone metabolites (Metabolon®) and assessed volumetric measures of MBD including volumetric percent density (VPD), dense vol

UNLABELLED: Breast density (BD) is an independent risk factor for breast cancer and reduces mammographic sensitivity. This study explored women's responses and intentions if notified that they had dense breasts.
METHODS: Content analysis was used to assess responses from a written questionnaire undertaken in conjunction with focus groups on BD involving 78 Australian women aged 40-74.
RESULTS: Half the women reported that they would feel a little anxious if notified they had dense breasts, while 29.5% would not feel anxious. The most common theme (29.5%) related to anxiety was the psychosoci
