Non Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis.

Bronchiectasis is a pathological abnormality of the airways in which there is permanent dilatation and thickening of the airways. Precise incidence/prevalence in India is not known. Recent data suggests that about 1 % young children admitted in a hospital with pneumonia may develop bronchiectasis. Due to significant burden of pneumonia in young children in developing countries including India, it may be a significant problem that is possibly under recognized. Causes of bronchiectasis depend on the burden of respiratory infections and availability of the investigations for identification of the

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

Bronchiectasis is a chronic debilitating condition with considerable phenotypic diversity. A vicious cycle of infection and inflammation exists in damaged airways with patients suffering from persistent cough, purulent sputum production, recurrent chest infections and general malaise. The associated burden of disease in terms of increased morbidity, reduced quality of life and the socioeconomic cost of long-term management is significant. Further research is essential to improve our understanding of the development and progression of this disease. This article reviews what is currently known a

Pulmonary oedema mimicking bronchiectasis.

A previously completely fit and well 62-year-old man presented with a 4-week history of lethargy and increasing shortness of breath. This had been preceded by a flu-like illness that had been treated in the community with ciprofloxacin to no effect. There was no history of smoking, tuberculosis exposure or significant exposure to birds. Clinically the patient appeared well and was comfortable and conversant with no peripheral oedema. Chest auscultation revealed normal breath sounds and a loud pansystolic murmur over the cardiac apex. A chest radiograph and a subsequent CT scan showed widesprea

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

Bronchiectasis is characterized by irreversible widening of the medium-sized airways, with inflammation, chronic bacterial infection and destruction of the bronchial walls. Exercise or inspiratory muscle training may improve quality of life and exercise endurance in people with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. Prolonged-use antibiotics improve clinical response rates, but may not reduce exacerbation rates or lung function. Surgery is often considered for people with extreme damage to one or two lobes of the lung who are at risk for severe infection or bleeding. In this review, the authors w

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

Bronchiectasis is a chronic debilitating condition. Pathologically, a vicious cycle of infection and inflammation exists in the permanently damaged airways with patients suffering a persistent cough, chronic daily sputum production and recurrent chest infections. Once termed an 'orphan disease', the prevalence of bronchiectasis has become increasingly recognised over the past few decades. The associated burden of disease in terms of respiratory morbidity, effect on patients' health-related quality of life and the economic cost of long term management is significant and it has become apparent t

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

Non-cystic fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis is said to be a declining problem in developed countries, although its prevalence in indigenous communities in Australia and New Zealand is among the highest reported in the world. Early childhood pneumonia and underlying conditions such as immunodeficiency and primary ciliary dyskinesia need to be considered in the aetiology. A high-resolution computerised tomography scan is the key investigation in children with a chronic wet cough in whom bronchiectasis is suspected. Regardless of the cause, the treatment of bronchiectasis is centred upon facilitating

Bronchiectasis, part 2: Management.

Systemic antibiotics are the mainstay of the management of acute exacerbations of bronchiectasis. Antibiotic selection should include coverage for Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae; particular attention also should be paid to the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas species. The duration of antibiotic therapy is not well-established, but most clinicians recommend a prolonged course, often longer than 3 weeks. There is some evidence that long-term low-dose macrolide therapy can reduce the incidence of acute exacerbations and decrease sputum production. There also

Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia in Adult Bronchiectasis: Data from the German Bronchiectasis Registry PROGNOSIS.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disorder caused by the malfunction of motile cilia and a specific etiology of adult bronchiectasis of unknown prevalence. A better understanding of the clinical phenotype of adults with PCD is needed to identify individuals for referral to diagnostic testing. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the frequency of PCD among adults with bronchiectasis; how do people with PCD differ from those with other etiologies; and which clinical characteristics are independently associated with PCD? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We investigated the proportio
