TEMPORAL VASCULAR ARCADE WIDTH AND ANGLE IN HIGH AXIAL MYOPIA.

PURPOSE: Axial myopia is associated with elongation of the posterior ocular segment. The authors measured posterior fundus landmarks and assessed their associations with axial length. METHODS: Using fundus photographs, the authors measured the vertical distance between the temporal superior and temporal inferior arterial arcade (VDA) and the angle kappa between the temporal arterial arcades among other morphometric variables. RESULTS: The study included 456 eyes with a mean age of 61.2 ± 14.2 years (range: 13-88 years) and mean axial length of 29.4 ± 2.1 mm (range: 23.2-35.3 mm). Mean angle

Is basal laminar deposit unique for age-related macular degeneration?

The ultrastructural nature and distribution of basal laminar deposit, considered to be a precursor of age-related macular degeneration, were studied in 42 human maculae. Basal laminar deposit was found from age 19 years on, not only between the retinal pigment epithelial cells and their basement membrane but also more often on the choriocapillary side of Bruch's membrane. No direct relationship was found with other aging changes, such as calcifications in Bruch's membrane, accumulation of lipofuscin granules, or drusen in the macular area. Material similar to basal laminar deposit can be found

Histologic differences between primary high myopia and secondary high myopia due to congenital glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To search for histomorphometric differences between eyes with primary high myopia (PHM) or secondary high axial myopia (SHM) caused by congenital glaucoma, and non-highly myopic eyes (NHM). METHODS: Histologic anterior-posterior sections were histomorphometrically examined. RESULTS: The investigation included 58 human globes (mean age: 61.5 ± 18.5 years; axial length: 27.3 ± 4.0 mm; range: 21.0-39.0 mm). Bruch's membrane thickness was thinner in SHM than in PHM (posterior pole: p = 0.007; parapapillary region: p = 0.007); midpoint posterior pole/equator = 0.05) and thinner in SHM th

Human RGR Gene and Associated Features of Age-Related Macular Degeneration in Models of Retina-Choriocapillaris Atrophy.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease and the most common cause of blindness among the elderly. AMD is characterized by early atrophy of the choriocapillaris and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Although AMD is a multifactorial disease with many environmental and genetic risk factors, a hallmark of the disease is the origination of extracellular deposits, or drusen, between the RPE and Bruch membrane. Human retinal G-protein-coupled receptor (RGR) gene generates an exon-skipping splice variant of RGR-opsin (RGR-d; NP_001012740) that is a persistent component of s

Parapapillary atrophy and changes in the optic nerve head and posterior pole in high myopia.

We investigated the relationship between microstructure of β-parapapillary atrophy (β-PPA) and morphologic features of optic nerve head (ONH) and posterior pole in highly myopic eyes. Eighty-nine highly myopic eyes were included in this study. Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) area, lamina cribrosa (LC) thickness, anterior laminar depth, peripapillary and subfoveal choroidal thickness (CT), macular Bruch's membrane (BM) length, and width of β-PPA with and without Bruch's membrane (PPA+BM and PPA-BM) were evaluated. The mean age and axial length of the included subjects were 26.88 ± 2.44 years and

Hemorrhagic choroidal melanoma.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the clinical pathologic correlation in a hemorrhagic choroidal melanoma. OBSERVATIONS: A 52 year old patient presented with a large choroidal mass associated with vitreous and retinal hemorrhage. The eye was enucleated and histopathology demonstrated epithelioid-type MART1 positive tumor cells consistent with choroidal melanoma. The tumor had broken through Bruch's membrane, which led to localized vascular compression with bleeding into the subretinal space, retina and vitreous. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: Choroidal melanoma rarely presents with hemorrhage. Tumor rupt

Electrophysiology of type II mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis with associated fundus abnormalities.

The retinal electrophysiology is reported in four patients with type II mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis and partial lipodystrophy with associated fundus abnormalities and no visual symptoms. The histological hallmark of the condition is that of widespread electron dense deposits in the renal glomerulus and in the choriocapillaris and Bruch's membrane of the eye. Three of the four patients had the typical fundal appearance of multiple, yellow, drusen-like lesions at the posterior pole of the eye with normal visual acuity. These three patients had abnormally low Arden ratios on electro-ocul

Atrophic, Tractional, and Neovascular Grading System in a Dome-Shaped Macula and Ridge-Shaped Macula Highly Myopic Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze the atrophic, tractional, and neovascular (ATN) components grading in highly myopic patients with dome-shaped macula (DSM) and ridge-shaped macula (RSM). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, noninterventional study. 57 eyes of 38 different patients were included. They were classified as DSM or RSM based on the number of radial scans that showed an inward protrusion ≥50 µm in the swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) (12 = DSM; <12 = RSM). All patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination in addition to SS-OCT. The

A fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographic study of choriocapillaris in age-related macular disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the phenomenon of a prolonged choroidal filling phase (PCFP) as seen on fluorescein and indocyanine green (ICG) angiography in patients with early age-related macular disease (AMD). METHODS: One hundred eyes of consecutive patients with early AMD were studied. Patchy and slow choroidal filling in early fluorescein and distinct areas of reduced choroidal fluorescence in ICG angiography were interpreted as PCFP. In addition, associated drusen characteristics and the AMD status of the fellow eye were recorded. RESULTS: A PCFP was observed in 26% of eyes using fluorescein a

[Lacquer cracks complicated with choroidal neovascularization in pseudoxanthoma elasticum: the first case report in Burkina Faso].

Lacquer cracks are breaks in the Bruch membrane by alteration of the elastic layer. They are often associated with pseudoxanthoma elasticum. The authors report the first case in Burkina Faso involving a 51-year-old woman who was seen for visual acuity loss. She had pseudoxanthoma elasticum associated with lacquer cracks complicated by choroidal neovascularization in both eyes. She was treated with laser photocoagulation of the neovessels in the left eye, and no recurrence was reported after 6 months.

Inflammation and outer blood-retina barrier (BRB) compromise following choroidal murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infections.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the blood-retina barrier is compromised by choroidal murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infection, using electron microscopy. METHODS: BALB/c mice were immunosuppressed with methylprednisolone and monoclonal antibodies to CD4 and CD8. At several time points post-MCMV intraperitoneal inoculation, the eyes were removed and analyzed with western blotting and immunoelectron microscopy for the presence of MCMV early antigen (EA) and the host protein RIP3. Posterior eyecups from RIP3-/- and RIP3+/+ mice were cultured and inoculated with MCMV. A

Sympathetic ophthalmia. Histopathologic and fluorescein angiographic correlation.

Sympathetic ophthalmia was found 15 months after cataract extraction in a previously traumatized eye. Histopathologic examination disclosed numerous Dalen-Fuchs nodules with underlying choroidal granulomas causing obliteration of the choriocapillaris and disruption of Bruch's membrane. Prominent Dalen-Fuchs nodules were also observed clinically in the sympathizing eye, and the angiographic findings of initial hypofluorescence followed by late hyperfluorescence correlated with the pathologic findings in the sympathogenic eye. Only ten cases of sympathetic ophthalmia with fluorescein angiography

Quantification of choroidal hyperreflective layer: A swept-source optical coherence tomography study.

PURPOSE: To investigate variation in reflectivity of choroidal layers in normal eyes. METHODS: From the swept-source optical coherence tomography database, we retrospectively included eyes with a normal fundus. Choroidal reflectivity was measured on the horizontal and vertical B-scan optical coherence tomography images. The optical barrier of the choroid was defined as the first hill in the middle of the reflectance graph from the retinal pigment epithelium-Bruch's membrane complex to the chorioscleral junction. RESULTS: The optical barrier of the choroid was identified in 91 eyes of 91 indi

Giant retinal pigment epithelium tears with membranous nephropathy: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Kidney and eye diseases may be closely linked. Tears of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) have been reported to be related to kidney diseases, such as IgA nephropathy and light-chain deposition disease. However, pigment epithelium tears associated with membranous nephropathy have not been reported or systematically analysed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man presented with decreased right eye visual acuity. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed cystic macular edema, localized serous detachment of the retina and loss of the outer retinal structure in the right eye and r

Pathological findings from two cases of choroideremia.

Light and electron microscopic study of material from two cases of old, quiescent choroideremia led to three conclusions: there was nearly total loss of the outer segments of the visual receptors, there was reduplication of the basement membrane of the pigment epithelium and thickening of Bruch's membrane, and there was gliosis of the inner part of the retina and a preretinal membrane.

The effect of the acceleration/deceleration trauma in angioid streaks: A pathogenic hypothesis.

CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old male with acceleration/deceleration cranial trauma (ADT), caused by a car accident. After one month, he presented with loss of visual acuity in the right eye. A fluorescein angiography test was performed and it detected centrifugal hyperfluorescent lines from the optic nerve head, a characteristic compatible with the diagnosis of angioid streaks. The loss of visual acuity was demonstrated by the discovery of a juxtafoveal choroidal neovascular membrane (CNV). CONCLUSION: ADT can cause hyper-extension of the eyeball in its equator line, producing the rupture of fragi
