The influence of physical factors on the behaviour and infectivity of miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium. II. Effect of light and depth.

A striking difference was found in the responses of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium miracidia to the intensity and direction of light and to gravity. S. mansoni miracidia were found to be positively phototactic and sensitive to small changes in light intensities. They were indifferent to gravity. S. haematobium miracidia however were negatively phototactic and unable to distinguish low light intensities from darkness. They showed a strong positive geotaxis. Both S. mansoni and S. haematobium miracidia could successfully find and infect snails to a depth of 2 metres of water: the signifi

Decline of urinary schistosomiasis in Kurmuk town, western Ethio-Sudanese border, Ethiopia.

Urine examination of the residents of Kurmuk town, Western Ethio-Sudanese border, done in April 1993, showed that Schistosoma haematobium infection has now declined to 5.7% from 30.2% in 1981. The current intensity of infection is also as low as 20 eggs/10 ml urine. However, the finding of infected Bulinus africanus indicates resurgence of urinary schistosomiasis in the town. Possible factors that may have contributed to the decline and measures required to contain the disease are discussed.

A demonstration of the presence of anti-snail antibodies in individuals infected with Schistosoma haematobium.

An extract of the snail Bulinus (Physopsis) africanus, the intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium, was used as the antigen in haemagglutination tests in a survey of the prevalence of anti-snail antibodies in various population groups. It was found that sera from known bilharzia-infected individuals and randomly selected individuals from bilharzia endemic areas had significantly higher incidences as well as higher titres of antibodies to this snail antigen than non-infected individuals and individuals from non-endemic areas.

Susceptibility of Ethiopian bulinid snails to Schistosoma haematobium from Somalia.

Susceptibility of four Ethiopian bulinid snails to a Somalian strain of S. haematobium was tested. Bulinus abyssinicus was highly susceptible and lowland B. africanus was partially susceptible while B. truncatus and B. forskalii were refractory to the parasite. It is suggested that Ethiopian refugees returning from Somalia and/or Somalian refugees entering Ethiopia should be screened and treated for S. haematobium before they are allowed to work/resettle in development areas where B. abyssinicus and B. africanus are known or ecologically suspected to occur.

A comprehensive evaluation of Agave attenuata, a candidate plant molluscicide in South Africa.

Dried leaf material of a Mexican plant, Agave attenuata, was found to be highly toxic to the target snail, Bulinus africanus, intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium in South Africa. The molluscicidal potency of the plant underwent seasonal variation, but remained stable over a range of pH values, after exposure to sunlight and organic matter, and during dry storage. It was unstable in aqueous suspension. The toxicity of the molluscicide to crop plants, invertebrates, fish and mammals was lacking or low. Given these properties, A. attenuata may provide a substitute for niclosamide and be

Kinetic potentials of certain scavenger enzymes in fresh water snails susceptible and non-susceptible to Schistosoma infection.

The activities of catalase (H2O2-oxidoreductase EC 1.11.1.6)- and glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2) as two important scavenger enzymes, were measured in tissue homogenates of Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus, the snail vectors of Schistosomiasis. A parallel study was done on Lymnea truncatula snails which are not susceptible to Schistosoma infection. The apparent Michaelis constant (Km) for both anzymes were determined in tissue homogenates of the three studied species. The results obtained showed that both susceptible species have higher affinity to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and

Schistosoma haematobium cercariae transmission patterns in freshwater systems of Anambra State, Nigeria.

The seasonality of infection of Bulinus (Ph.) globosus, the snail host of Schistosoma haematobium is reported. The pattern of snail infection was shown to vary with the type of habitats. The cercarial "transmission potential" was calculated based on the number of infected snails and the level of cercarial production. It is consequently assumed that the transmission pattern varies with season and habitat type. Dry season transmission potential was found to be high in running water habitats while low in stagnant water habitats. In the wet season, the reverse seems to be the case. The implication

Prospects of schistosomiasis at the Kidatu dam project in Tanzania.

A schistosomiasis survey was carried out to determine the present and future potential for transmission of schistosomiasis at the site of the Great Ruaha Power Project at Kidatu. Although a few cases of the disease in the human population were recorded at the dam-site and in the future reservoir lake areas, they were probably contracted outside as both areas were considered unlikely habitats for the snail transmitters of schistosomiasis. Higher prevalence rates were registered in the neighbouring areas Kidodi, Kilombero and Kidatu, where snail vectors of urinary schistosomiasis, Bulinus (Physo

[Epidemiologic study of intestinal and urinary bilharziasis in the Tala Mokolo region (Mandara Mountains, North Cameroon)].

In the Mandara Mountains, where small dams have been erected, people living in the Tala Mokolo district eliminate some S. haematobium eggs in 31,4% of urines samples, and some S. mansoni eggs in 38,1% of stools samples. Evaluated from hemagglutination test, bilharziosis prevalence reaches 55,7%. Male subjects are more frequently affected than female subjects, particularly as for as intestinal bilharziosis is concerned. Urinary bilharziosis prevalence or intestinal bilharziosis prevalence are subject to proximity of small water reservoirs mostly infested either by Bulinus globosus or Biomphalar

The substructure of three repetitive DNA regions of Schistosoma haematobium group species as a potential marker for species recognition and interbreeding detection.

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma haematobium is the causative agent of human urogenital schistosomiasis affecting ~112 million people in Africa and the Middle East. The parasite is transmitted by snails of the genus Bulinus, which also transmit other closely related human and animal schistosomes. The accurate discrimination of S. haematobium from species infecting animals will aid effective control and elimination programs. Previously we have shown the utility of different repetitive nuclear DNA sequences (DraI, sh73bp, and sh77bp) for the identification of S. haematobium-group species and inter-repeat

Importance of the aquatic weed Ceratophyllum to transmission of Schistosoma haematobium in the Volta Lake, Ghana.

Results of 5 years of sampling for Bulinus rohlfsi in human-water contact sites of villages along the Volta Lake, Ghana, have confirmed that the aquatic macrophyte, Ceratophyllum, is the most important ecological factor for sustaining high levels of cercarial transmission of Schistosoma haematobium. Data available so far indicate that growth of this weed largely determines the size of the snail populations. Increasing density of Ceratophyllum correlates with increasing levels of cercarial transmission potential in the water contact sites and of S. haematobium infection in the village populatio

Transplantation of Schistosoma japonicum daughter sporocysts in Oncomelania hupensis.

Schistosoma japonicum daughter sporocysts obtained from infected Oncomelania hupensis hupensis were successfully transplanted to parasite-free O. hupensis hupensis. Survival and infection rates of recipient snails were 80% and 75% respectively. Intramolluscan development of transplanted daughter sporocysts in recipient snails appears to proceed in a similar manner as those reported for transplanted S. mansoni and S. haematobium in their respective snail intermediate hosts. Complete colonization of the digestive gland of recipient snails by sporocysts was observed 80 days after transplantation.

Mixing of Schistosoma haematobium strains in Ghana.

In Ghana, Schistosoma haematobium exists as two strains, one transmitted by Bulinus rohlfsi and the other by B. globosus. In Anyaboni, a resettlement town, where the field station of the UNDP/WHO Schistosomiasis Research and Control Project is located, the residents contract the "rohlfsi" strain of the parasite from the Volta Lake and the "globosus" strain from a stream near the town. The present studies indicate that there is mixing of the two parasite strains on a community and an individual basis. In Anyaboni, the parasite developed well in both B. rohlfsi and B. globosus. In another villag

Mapping of snail intermediate host habitats reveals variability in schistosome and non-schistosome trematode transmission in an endemic setting.

The intermediate snail host of Schistosoma haematobium, the etiological agent of urogenital schistosomiasis, serves as a critical sentinel for tracking the spread of associated disease risks. In addition to S. haematobium, Bulinus spp. snails also transmit S. bovis to cattle as well as several non-schistosome trematodes to cattle and wildlife. Identifying transmission foci of these multi-parasite hosts is critical for targeted and effective One Health intervention. We investigated 467 waterbodies in 86 villages across six districts in northwestern Tanzania. A total of 43,348 Bulinus nasutus we

Seasonality in the transmission of schistosomiasis and in populations of its snail intermediate hosts in and around a sugar irrigation scheme at Richard Toll, Senegal.

Irrigation for intensive sugar cultivation started in the early 1980s at Richard Toll, some 100 km from the mouth of the Senegal River. Infections with Schistosoma mansoni were first seen in late 1988. This study records quantitative snail surveys for over 3 years from 1992 at sites representing different habitats in and around the irrigation scheme. Populations of both Biomphalaria pfeifferi (the intermediate host of S. mansoni) and Bulinus spp. (mainly B. truncatus, the local host of S. boris) peaked in late 'spring' or early 'summer', depending on the habitat, and then remained low until th

Exploring the immune interactions between Oncomelania hupensis and Schistosoma japonicum, with a cross-comparison of immunological research progress in other intermediate host snails.

Schistosomiasis, the second largest parasitic disease in the world after malaria, poses a significant threat to human health and causes public health issues. The disease primarily affects populations in economically underdeveloped tropical regions, earning it the title of "neglected tropical disease". Schistosomiasis is difficult to eradicate globally if medication alone is used. One of the essential elements of thorough schistosomiasis prevention and control is the management and disruption of the life cycle of intermediate host snails. The key approach to controlling the transmission of schi

On the distribution of schistosome infections among host snails.

The distribution of Schistosoma haematobium infections in a population of Bulinus globosus snails collected from a field site in Zimbabwe is described. Cercariae of both sexes emerged from a proportion of patent infected snails, as was demonstrated by the detection of paired schistosomes in hamsters each exposed to cercariae from a single snail. These snails must have been infected by two or more miracidia. Analysis showed that the proportion of mixed-sex infections was higher than expected if infections were distributed at random among snails. An index of overdispersion was calculated. Overdi

Despite the progress already made in the field of epidemiology and the control of schistosomiasis, the practical application of an efficient and economically acceptable methodology still remains a difficult problem to solve. In the saharian and pre-saharian regions of Tunisia, Bulinus truncatus was successfully controlled while at the same time most of the infected people were treated, so that the transmission did not show up through the appearance of new cases at the outset of the 2nd semester 1976.
