Comparison of avalanche survival patterns in Canada and Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Current recommendations for rescue and resuscitation of people buried in avalanches are based on Swiss avalanche survival data. We analyzed Canadian survival patterns and compared them with those from Switzerland. METHODS: We extracted relevant data for survivors and nonsurvivors of complete avalanche burials from Oct. 1, 1980, to Sept. 30, 2005, from Canadian and Swiss databases. We calculated survival curves for Canada with and without trauma-related deaths as well as for different outdoor activities and snow climates. We compared these curves with the Swiss survival curve. Health effects of European colonization: An investigation of skeletal remains from 19th to early 20th century migrant settlers in South Australia.

The British colony of South Australia, established in 1836, offered a fresh start to migrants hoping for a better life. A cohort of settlers buried in a section of St Mary's Anglican Church Cemetery (1847-1927) allocated for government funded burials was investigated to determine their health, with a focus on skeletal manifestations associated with metabolic deficiencies. Findings of St Mary's sample were compared with those published for contemporary skeletal samples from two British cemeteries, St Martin's, Birmingham, and St Peter's, Wolverhampton, to explore similarities and differences. Taphophobia and 'life preserving coffins' in the nineteenth century.

In 1891 the Italian psychiatrist Enrico Morselli (1852-1929) described taphophobia, defining it as an extreme condition of claustrophobia due to the fear of being buried alive. This rare psychopathological phenomenon reflects an ancient fear, and its origin is not known. Taphophobia is closely linked to the problem of apparent death and premature burial. In the nineteenth century, scientists and authors paid particular attention to the issue of apparent death, and special devices (safety coffins) were invented to ensure that premature burial was avoided. Nowadays taphophobia is quite a rare ps

Prognostic factors of poor surgical outcome after clitoral reconstruction in women with female genital mutilation/cutting.

BACKGROUND: Complications of surgical clitoral reconstruction for female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) are a rare occurrence, but there has been reports of patients experiencing chronic pain or clitoral burial. AIM: This study aims to assess which factors are predictive of the occurrence of surgical complications in women who had surgical reconstruction for FGM/C (type 1, 2, or 3). METHODS: This monocentric retrospective study was conducted among patients who underwent clitoral reconstruction after FGM/C from January 2016 to March 2020. Demographic and clinical data were abstracted from

Serum potassium concentration predicts brain hypoxia on CT after avalanche-induced cardiac arrest.

BACKGROUND: Brain anoxia after complete avalanche burial and cardiac arrest (CA) may occur despite adequate on-site triage. PURPOSE: To investigate clinical and biological parameters associated with brain hypoxia in a cohort of avalanche victims with whole body computed tomographic (CT) scan. METHODS: Retrospective study of patients with CA and whole body CT scan following complete avalanche burial admitted in a level-I trauma center. MAIN FINDINGS: Out of 19 buried patients with whole body CT scan, eight patients had refractory CA and 11 patients had pre-hospital return of spontaneous circ

Skeletal remains from Punic Carthage do not support systematic sacrifice of infants.

Two types of cemeteries occur at Punic Carthage and other Carthaginian settlements: one centrally situated housing the remains of older children through adults, and another at the periphery of the settlement (the "Tophet") yielding small urns containing the cremated skeletal remains of very young animals and humans, sometimes comingled. Although the absence of the youngest humans at the primary cemeteries is unusual and worthy of discussion, debate has focused on the significance of Tophets, especially at Carthage, as burial grounds for the young. One interpretation, based on two supposed eye-

How inequality became durable before states: Evidence from 6000 years in the Central Plain of China.

How did durable inequality emerge before the rise of states? Drawing on a synthesis of previously published mortuary data from more than 2300 burials, together with isotopic, zooarchaeological, and osteological data spanning nearly 6000 years (7000 to 1500 BCE) in the prehistoric Central Plain of China, we reconstruct long-term patterns of relational mortuary inequality. We show that inequality followed a strongly nonlinear trajectory and cannot be explained primarily by agricultural intensification or population scale. Instead, substantial disparities were structured by differential positions

A case study of an unknown mass grave - Hostages killed 70 years ago by a Nazi firing squad identified thanks to genetics.

Almost 6 million people died in Poland during the Nazi occupation and about 570 thousand during the Soviet occupation. But the end of the war was not the end of the trauma. Historians estimate that at least 30 thousand people were killed during the Stalinist regime in Poland. In 2012 the Institute of National Remembrance started to search for hidden burials of victims of communism. Many exhumations were carried out under the project. One of them took place in Białystok, eastern Poland. According to information gathered by local historians, a detention centre in the heart of city was the place

Pestilence, riots, lynchings and desecration of corpses. The sleep of reason produces monsters.

Vampirism has been a component of Central European and Balkan folklore since the Middle Ages and was often believed to be responsible for the transmission of serious infectious diseases such as plague and tuberculosis/consumption. Vampirism was believed to be spread within the same family or village and if the rite of the so-called second burial after death was not performed. The practice of "second burial" entailed exhumation of the body and the removal of the shroud from the mouth of the corpse, and a search for evidence if the corpse had chewed the cloth. If the shroud was chewed, a handful

Mass graves of plague and decapitation victims from late medieval and early modern cemetery in Gdańsk, Poland.

In the mid-fourteenth century a cemetery for the burial of the destitute, pilgrims and non-citizens of Gdańsk, Poland, was founded beyond the city walls. During epidemics, the local urban population was buried there in mass graves. Excavations in Gdańsk led to the discovery of four mass graves, the largest of which contained the remains of 759 people who were probably killed by the same plague. In addition to being used as a plague cemetery, this site also served as a burial ground for criminals. Following a single mass execution, 41 decapitated bodies were interred in a mass grave dated to th

Instability in the geological regulation of Earth's climate.

Negative feedback between climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), mediated by the weathering of silicate minerals on land, is thought to provide the primary regulation of Earth's climate on geological timescales. By contrast, we found that faster feedbacks involving organic matter are not only critical to Earth system recovery but can also create unexpected instability. Our Earth system model experiments show how sedimentary organic carbon burial, amplified by redox-sensitive phosphorus regeneration, can outweigh silicate weathering and paradoxically drive climate overcooling in response

Why do burying beetles bury? Competition and the fitness benefits of parental care.

Parental care increases the fitness of current offspring at a cost to their parents, compromising parental resources for future reproduction. Given this inherent conflict and cost, complex parental care is relatively uncommon. Reliance on a rare and critical resource for reproduction that necessitates intense competition and defence could be a key reason for the evolution of costly and diverse parental care behaviors. Burying beetles (genus Nicrophorus) rely on carrion for reproduction, and have a suite of parental care behaviors, including the burying of small carcasses within underground bre

Commingled skeletal remains found in a bulk bag: a case report on forensic and archaeological differentiation.

The discovery of human skeletal remains in non-burial settings often triggers immediate criminal investigations. When forensic pathologists lack sufficient anthropological training, differentiating between forensic and archaeological remains becomes challenging, potentially leading to unnecessary judicial costs. This case report highlights the critical role of forensic anthropology in determining post-mortem intervals and guiding judicial decisions. CASE DESCRIPTION: Four industrial bulk bags were illegally dumped at a suburban car dealership. Three contained construction waste, and one contai

The evolution of the Earth's surface iron cycle.

Formation and burial of pyrite (iron sulfide) in marine sediments exert a fundamental control on atmospheric oxygenation and seawater buffering over geological timescales. However, little is known about how the formation and delivery of its precursor, reactive iron (Fe) oxide minerals, have evolved throughout Earth history. Secular variability in reactive Fe (including Fe oxides and pyrite) preserved in marine sediments is commonly attributed solely to redox changes. Here, we develop an approach to distinguish redox-driven influences from other controls on sedimentary reactive Fe, including th

Death and mourning in times of COVID-19. The experience of Zimbabwean migrants in South Africa.

The paper deals with the effects of the regulations and restrictions on the handling of corpses and funerals among Zimbabwean migrant families who lost relatives in South Africa during the COVID-19 epidemic in the years 2020 and 2021. Interviews were conducted with members of this migrant community. The interviews revealed a range of affective and material dimensions entangled in these multiple losses, highlighting therefore experiences of truncated grief. Restrictions on funerals and burials forced immobility on the living and their dead; on bereaved communities, themselves and their corpses
