Butterfly-shaped pattern dystrophy: a genetic, clinical, and histopathological report.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the disease-causing mutation in a large family segregating dominantly inherited butterfly-shaped pattern dystrophy (BPD) and to describe the microscopic pathological changes observed in a member of this family. METHODS: Seventeen individuals at risk for dominantly inherited BPD in a family were examined and blood samples obtained. Linkage analysis and mutation screening of the human retinal degeneration slow (RDS)/peripherin locus were performed. Light and electron microscopic examinations were performed on 1 postmortem eye of 1 affected individual. RESULTS: Four indi

The diving bell meets the butterfly: identity lost and re-membered.

Jean Dominique Bauby, former editor of Elle, suffered a stroke to his brain stem that left him with locked-in syndrome. Subsequently, through blinking his left eye, he writes his memoir of this experience, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This paper explores the meaning of embodiment, especially as one's body bears upon one's personal identity. It explores the various challenges and threats to selfhood that result from Bauby's experience and recounts how Bauby rises to the challenge through his memory and imagination.

Hydrogen-Free APCVD Synthesis of Heterophase WSe2 Nano-Butterflies for Room Temperature NO2 Detection: Experimental and Computational Insights.

We report a scalable hydrogen-free synthesis of heterophase 2H/1T' WSe2-based gas sensor for ultrasensitive room temperature NO2 detection. Moving beyond conventional defect engineering, this work leverages deliberate phase and morphological synergies to overcome traditional kinetic trade-offs in 2D material-based sensors. Unlike conventional 3D structures, this open hierarchical nano-butterfly-like morphology prevents van der Waals restacking and maximizes exposed active edge sites for rapid gas diffusion. Quantitative phase engineering yielding an optimized surface of kinetically trapped 1T'

Vermilion and cinnabar are involved in ommochrome pigment biosynthesis in eyes but not wings of Bicyclus anynana butterflies.

If the same pigment is found in different tissues in a body, it is natural to assume that the same metabolic pathways are deployed similarly in each tissue. Here we show that this is not the case for ommochromes, the red and orange pigments found in the eyes and wings of butterflies. We tested the expression and function of vermilion and cinnabar, two known fly genes in the ommochrome pathway, in the development of pigments in the eyes and in the wings of Bicyclus anynana butterflies, both traits having reddish/orange pigments. By using fluorescent in-situ hybridization (HCR3.0) we localized t

Anti-aphrodisiac compounds of male butterflies increase the risk of egg parasitoid attack by inducing plant synomone production.

During mating in many butterfly species, males transfer spermatophores that contain anti-aphrodisiacs to females that repel conspecific males. For example, males of the large cabbage white, Pieris brassicae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), transfer the anti-aphrodisiac, benzyl cyanide (BC) to females. Accessory reproductive gland (ARG) secretion of a mated female P. brassicae that is deposited with an egg clutch contains traces of BC, inducing Brussels sprouts plants (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) to arrest certain Trichogramma egg parasitoids. Here, we assessed whether deposition of one egg at a

The crescent cross-section and dichotomous chitin structure make the proboscis of butterflies and moths a hydraulic spring.

The proboscis of butterflies and moths is made of two C-shaped tubular strands, each with a crescent cross-section. Together, they form a food canal for fluid uptake. Each strand is sealed at the free end and blood is pumped in at the head. The accepted scenario for proboscis uncoiling assumes that intrinsic muscles deform the proboscis walls like fingers pressing a bicycle tire, decreasing the cross-sectional area and displacing blood that pushes the external walls outward, as does the air in the tire. This scenario requires the external walls of the strands to be softer than the food canal w

[Epidemic outbreaks of dermatitis caused by butterflies of the genus Hylesia (Lepidoptera: Hemileucidae) in São Paulo State, Brazil].

Epidemic outbreaks of dermatitis caused by Hylesia sp which occurred in the coastal region of the State of S. Paulo during the period of December 1989 to December 1991 are confirmed. The incident assumed its greatest intensity in Bertioga, in Santos County, where 612 cases were registered. The outbreak also affected 12 other counties in that region and it was estimated that hundred of affected persons sought the Local Health Service Care. The majority presented with erythematous and prutiginous lesions and papula which lasted 7 to 14 days on average. Treatment consisted of systemic administrat

Changes in muscle coordination during butterfly swimming at submaximal and maximal efforts.

The aim of this study was to clarify the changes in muscle coordination during butterfly swimming at different swimming speeds. Eight female swimmers performed 25 m butterfly at 60%, 80% and 100% effort. Two-dimensional motion analysis was conducted using video data. Surface electromyography was recorded from 12 muscles in the right upper limb, lower limb, and trunk, and muscle synergies were identified using non-negative matrix factorisation. The kinematic analysis showed that the catch phase of the arm stroke shortened with increasing speeds. For most swimmers, four muscle synergies were ext

Functional structure and beta diversity of butterfly communities in a Chinese biodiversity hotspot.

Due to the high diversity of both habitats and wild species in China, biological communities are characterized by a high functional diversity. Butterfly communities are often classified into two functional groups, specialists and generalists. But a finer trait-based classification might be needed for a better understanding of community assembly processes. Here, we used larval diet, voltinism, and dispersal ability to identify functional groups and relate their responses in alpha and beta diversity to gradients in human disturbance, altitude, and resource availability. Across all species, we fo

Congestion management using monarch butterfly optimization in restructured power system.

Congestion is an important issue and its management is one of the main technical challenges in any restructured power system. Congestion occurs, when the line flow exceeds its capacity while accommodating all the constraints of power transfer through the line simultaneously. The Locational Marginal Price (LMP) is a vital element involved in the calculation of generation units’ profit. In this proposal, LMP based bi-level approach for congestion management has been developed and it can be reliably and efficiently used for the relief of congestion in restructured power systems. The difference in

Modified effective butterfly optimizer for solving optimal power flow problem.

The optimal power flow (OPF) problem remains a popular and challenging work in optimizing power systems. Although researchers have suggested many optimization algorithms to solve this problem in the literature, their comparison studies lack fairness and transparency. As these studies increase in number, they deviate from a standard test system, considering a common security and technical constraints., there is a growing trend away from a standard test system. Different studies used different search ranges for the same decision and constraint parameters, different than the standard ranges sugge

Inflationary Butterfly Effect: Nonperturbative Dynamics from Small-Scale Features.

For the first time, we investigate the nonperturbative dynamics of single field inflation with a departure from slow roll. Using simulations, we find that oscillatory features in the potential can drastically alter the course of inflation, with major phenomenological implications. In certain cases, the entire Universe gets trapped in a forever inflating de Sitter state. In others, only some regions get stuck in a false vacuum, offering an alternative channel for primordial black hole formation. Analogous to the flap of a butterfly, these results show that small-scale phenomena can have profoun

Transglabellar Butterfly Incision for Anterior Cranial Vault Access: Case Report.

(1) Background: The transglabellar approach, a type of transfacial technique, typically involves glabellar resection and opening the frontal sinus via a bicoronal incision, providing access to the anterior cranial vault. To prevent complications, the frontal sinus is typically obliterated. However, the success of transnasal endoscopic techniques has prompted a re-evaluation of these traditional methods. (2) Methods: This paper provides a brief literature review and discusses the removal of an elongated glioma of the left gyrus rectus (4.4 × 1.9 × 2.2 cm) in a 63-year-old male using a transglab

A comparison of endoscopic and microscopic inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasties and their educational utility.

OBJECTIVES: Inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty (IBCT) is a simple grafting technique. Endoscopy facilitates visualization by eliminating blind spots. We analyzed the outcomes of IBCT using both endoscopic and microscopic approaches, and assessed how trainees perceived the educational opportunities afforded. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients who underwent IBCT were allocated to Group I (n = 30; microscopic IBCT) and Group II (n = 30; endoscopic IBCT) by the dates of their visits. Anatomical success was defined as an intact, repaired tympanic membrane; functional success was defined as
