C - reactive protein predicts proximal femur osteomyelitis in suppurative hip arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound is capable of detecting hip joint effusion and guiding puncture procedures, which is cheap and convenient, but can not identify osteomyelitis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing osteomyelitis, but it is time-consuming and expensive. The purpose of this study was to find out certain indicators to identify suppurative hip arthritis with proximal femur osteomyelitis in order to optimize MRI. METHODS: Data of 48 children with acute suppurative arthritis of the hip diagnosed and treated from March 2018 to September 2024 were

C-Reactive Protein (CRP): A Potent Inflammation Biomarker in Psychiatric Disorders.

An increasing number of studies have investigated the role of inflammation in psychiatric disorders, by demonstrating how an altered/dysfunctional immunological and inflammatory system may underpin a psychiatric condition. Particularly, several studies specifically investigated the role of a neuroinflammatory biomarker, named C-reactive protein (CRP), in psychiatric disorders. Overall, even though scientific literature so far published still does not appear definitive, CRP is more likely reported to be elevated in several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety

C-Reactive Protein and White Blood Cell Count in Cardiogenic Shock.

This study examines the prognostic impact of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) counts in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS). Data regarding the prognostic impact of inflammatory biomarkers in CS are scarce. All consecutive patients with CS from 2019 to 2021 admitted to a cardiac intensive care unit (ICU) were included at one institution. Laboratory measurements were retrieved from the day of admission (i.e., day 1), as well as days 2, 3, 4, and 8. The primary endpoint was 30-day all-cause mortality. Statistical analyses included univariate t-tests, Spearman's correlations,

Relationship between C-reactive protein level and periodontitis and systemic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis affects systemic disease risk, although the relationship thereof in the context of different C-reactive protein (CRP) levels is not clear. This study investigated the association of periodontitis with systemic diseases according to high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) level and sought to identify the risk of systemic diseases in patients with periodontitis. METHODS: We used data from the seventh (2016-2018) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In a total of 16,489 subjects, the hs-CRP group was classified into the hs-CRP low-risk group and the hs-CRP high

Monomeric C-reactive protein induces the cellular pathology of Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Human study shows that elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) in blood impacts apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4, but not APOE ε3 or APOE ε2, genotype to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, whether CRP is directly involved in cellular AD pathogenesis and in which type of neuronal cells of APOE ε4 carriers are unknown. METHODS: We aimed to use different primary neuronal cells and investigate if CRP induces cellular AD pathology depending on APOE genotypes. Here the different primary neuronal cells from the different APOE genotype knock-in mice cortex were isolated and use

Cardiovascular Health Trajectories and Elevated C-Reactive Protein: The CARDIA Study.

Background The relationship between long-term cardiovascular health (CVH) patterns and elevated CRP (C-reactive protein) in late middle age has yet to be investigated. We aimed to assess this relationship. Methods and Results Individual CVH components were measured in 4405 Black and White men and women (aged 18-30 years at baseline) in the CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) study at 8 examinations over 25 years. CRP was measured at 4 examinations (years 7, 15, 20, and 25). Latent class modeling was used to identify individuals with similar trajectories in CVH from young

Meta-analysis of C-Reactive Protein and Risk of Angina Pectoris.

Associations between elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and the angina pectoris risk have been reported for many years, but the results remain controversial. To address this issue, a meta-analysis was therefore conducted. Eligible studies were identified by searching PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane library, and web of science up to January 2019. Altogether, 10 prospective cohort studies and 11 case-control studies were included, and they were published from 1997 to 2013 and summed up to 18,316 samples totally. The pooled mean difference of CRP levels was 4.44 (95% confidence interval 2.71 to 6.

C-reactive protein concentration in bipolar disorder: association with genetic variants.

BACKGROUND: Several recent studies have investigated the role of C-reactive protein (CRP) in bipolar disorder (BD), but few studies have directly investigated the interaction between CRP genetic variants and peripheral CRP concentration across different phases of BD. In this study, we aimed to replicate previous findings that demonstrated altered CRP levels in BD, and to investigate whether there is an association of peripheral protein expression with genetic variants in the CRP gene. METHODS: 221 patients were included in the study, of which 183 (all episodes, 46 not medicated, 174 medicated

A high C-reactive protein/procalcitonin ratio predicts Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

Background Discriminating Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) from Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) and viral etiologies of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is challenging but has important implications regarding empiric antibiotic therapy. We investigated patient parameters upon hospital admission to predict MP infection. Methods All patients hospitalized in a tertiary care hospital between 2013 and 2017 for CAP with a confirmed etiology were analyzed using logistic regression analyses and area under the receiver operator characteristics (ROC) curves (AUC) for associations between demographic, clinical

Association between C-reactive protein and gestational diabetes: a prospective study.

Studies that examined the impacts of inflammatory factors on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are very sparse. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) and the risk of GDM. Pregnant women who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and their gestational ages were below 10 weeks were recruited to this cohort study and were followed up until the 24-28 weeks of gestation. At the first pre-natal care visit blood samples were taken from all the pregnant women to investigate the serum concentration of CRP and fasting blood sugar. At 24-28 weeks of ge

Index C-reactive protein predicts increased severity in acute sigmoid diverticulitis.

PURPOSE: Conservative management is successful in unperforated (Hinchey Ia) acute diverticulitis (AD) and also generally in local perforation or small abscesses (Hinchey Ib). A higher degree of radiological severity (Hinchey >Ib), ie, a larger abscess (>3-4 cm) or peritonitis, commonly requires percutaneous drainage or surgery. Retrospective studies show that high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) distinguish Hinchey Ia from all cases of minor and major perforations (Hinchey >Ia). The current study aims to evaluate the usefulness of CRP in distinguishing AD with a higher degree of severity (H

Monomeric C-Reactive Protein and Cerebral Hemorrhage: From Bench to Bedside.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an important mediator and a hallmark of the acute-phase response to inflammation. High-sensitivity assays that accurately measure levels of CRP have been recommended for use in risk assessment in ischemic stroke patients. Elevation of CRP during the acute-phase response in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is also associated with the outcomes such as death and vascular complications. However, no association has been found with the increased risk of ICH. The aim of this review is to synthesize the published literature on the associations of CRP with acute ICH both as a

Procalcitonin and C-reactive protein as biomarkers for neonatal bacterial infection.

AIM: Neonates are predisposed to bacterial infection which are an important cause of early childhood morbidity and mortality globally. It has been proposed that procalcitonin has significant utility as a diagnostic marker for bacterial infection in febrile neonates when compared to C-reactive protein (CRP). The aim of this study is to conduct a literature search to find the best available evidence to answer the clinical question of the utility of procalcitonin when compared to CRP as a predictor of bacterial infection in febrile neonates. METHODS: Medline/PubMed was searched using the terms '

Genetic variation across C-reactive protein and risk of prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation has been hypothesized to play an important etiological role in the initiation or progression of prostate cancer. Circulating levels of the systemic inflammation marker C-reactive protein (CRP) have been associated with increased risk of prostate cancer. We investigated the role of genetic variation in CRP and prostate cancer, under the hypothesis that variants may alter risk of disease. METHODS: We undertook a case-control study nested within the prospective Physicians' Health Study among 1,286 men with incident prostate cancer and 1,264 controls. Four single-nucleoti

Neuropathic pain, depressive symptoms, and C-reactive protein in sciatica patients.

There is evidence that neuropathic pain component in low back pain (LBP) patients is associated with higher ratings of comorbidities such as depression and anxiety disorders. In line with current findings, the purpose of this clinical study is to examine a hypothesis regarding a relationship of neuropathic pain component, depression, and other psychopathological symptoms in a specific group of LBP patients with sciatica pain. With respect to findings that depression is related to inflammatory changes, and inflammatory mediators may play a role in neuropathic pain generation, we have assessed a
