Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium selenide (CdSe) leaching behavior and surface chemistry in response to pH and O2.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium selenide (CdSe) are increasingly being applied in photovoltaic solar cells and electronic components. A major concern is the public health and ecological risks associated with the potential release of toxic cadmium, tellurium, and/or selenium species. In this study, different tests were applied to investigate the leaching behavior of CdTe and CdSe in solutions simulating landfill leachate. CdTe showed a comparatively high leaching potential. In the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and Waste Extraction Test (WET), the concentrations of cadmi

The importance of nanocrystal precursor conversion kinetics: mechanism of the reaction between cadmium carboxylate and cadmium bis(diphenyldithiophosphinate).

We describe the synthesis of cadmium bis(diphenyldithiophosphinate) (Cd(S(2)PPh(2))(2)) from secondary phosphine sulfides and its conversion to cadmium sulfide nanocrystals. Heating Cd(S(2)PPh(2))(2) and cadmium tetradecanoate (≥4 equiv) to 240 °C results in complete conversion of Cd(S(2)PPh(2))(2) to cadmium sulfide nanocrystals with tetradecanoate surface termination. The nanocrystals have a narrow size distribution (d = 3.8-4.1 nm, σ < 10%) that is evident from the line width of the lowest energy absorption feature (λ = 412-422 nm, fwhm = 0.17 eV) and display bright photoluminescence (PLQY(

Cadmium retention increase: a probable key mechanism of the protective effect of zinc on cadmium-induced toxicity in the kidney.

Zinc (Zn) reverses cadmium (Cd)-induced toxicity in kidneys although it increases Cd tissue burden, hence, the present study is designed to study the relationships between Cd, Zn and antioxidants in the kidneys of rats exposed to Cd orally. Male rats received either tap water, Cd or Cd+Zn in their drinking water during five weeks. Cd-induced increase in Cd and Zn accumulation was accompanied by a decrease in important variables (GSH, GSH/GSSG, CuZn SOD and GPx activities) and by an increase in others (Cd/Zn, GSSG and CuZn SOD/GPx). Zn supply intensified Cd retention and Cd/Zn; it amplified CuZ

[Speciation analysis of cadmium in cadmium-enriched plants with SE-HPLC combined with ICP-MS and ESI-MS].

Different species of ferns (pyrrosia lingua, Lepisorus thunbergianus, Lycopodium japonicum, Elaphoglossum yoshinagae and Woodwardia japonica) were cultivated using different species of cadmium as cultivation solution. The results showed that there were differences in enrichment amounts of cadmium in different parts of plants (amounts in root > in stem > in leaves). And it was found that different species of cadmium could induce synthesization of plant--chelated peptides (PCs) with different extents. And then PCs was coordinated with cadmium to decrease the toxicity from cadmium. There are some

Top-down control analysis of the cadmium effects on molluscan mitochondria and the mechanisms of cadmium-induced mitochondrial dysfunction.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal and an important environmental pollutant that can strongly affect mitochondrial function and bioenergetics in animals. We investigated the mechanisms of Cd action on mitochondrial function of a marine mollusk (the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica) by performing a top-down control analysis of the three major mitochondrial subsystems (substrate oxidation, proton leak, and phosphorylation). Our results showed that the substrate oxidation and proton leak subsystems are the main targets for Cd toxicity in oyster mitochondria. Exposure to 12.5 μM Cd strongly inhibit

Seventeen-year observation on urinary cadmium and beta2-microglobulin in inhabitants after cessation of cadmium-exposure in Japan.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the change and relationship of urinary cadmium (Cd) and beta(2)-microglobulin (beta(2)-MG) concentrations of inhabitants in Cd-polluted areas after soil restoration. The urinary Cd and beta(2)-MG concentrations of 25 males and 28 females did not show a significant change, 22 years after the Cd-polluted soil was restored. Once exposed to Cd, it was found to remain in the body, 22 years after the Cd -polluted soil was restored. However, this did not influence renal tubular dysfunction in most of the younger generation compared with elders heavily exposed

Effects of cadmium telluride quantum dots on cadmium bioaccumulation and metallothionein production to the freshwater mussel, Elliptio complanata.

Nanotechnology has gained increasing commercial attention over recent years and its use has raised concerns about its potential release in the environment. The purpose of this study was to determine the size distribution of CdTe in freshwater, bioavailability and potential toxic effects of cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QD) to the freshwater mussel Elliptio complanata. Mussels were exposed to increasing concentrations (0 to 8 mg Cd L(-1)) of CdTe and 0.5 mg/L CdSO4 for 24 h at 15 degrees C to examine the initial uptake and toxic effects of Cd from CdTe QDs and dissolved CdSO4. Cellular localization of cadmium and structural changes in maize plants grown on a cadmium contaminated soil with and without liming.

The effects of different concentrations of soil cadmium (0, 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20mgkg(-1)) on growth, structural changes and cadmium cellular localization in leaves of maize plants (Zea mays L.) were investigated in a pot experiment. The results showed that the structural changes observed in maize leaves were not only a response to the Cd-induced stress but also a cellular mechanism to reduce the free Cd(+2) in the cytoplasm. However, this mechanism seems to be efficient only up to a Cd concentration in leaves between 27 and 35mgkg(-1) for soils without and with liming, respectively. The cellula

[R-phycoerythrin: a natural ligand for detoxifying cadmium ions and a tunnel matrix for synthesis of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles].

As evidenced by ion-selective electrode potentiometry, the hexameric R-phycoerythrin (RPE) molecule binds 20-4000 cadmium ions (Cd2+) depending on Cd2+ concentration in the solution. Cadmium ions bound to RPE serve as nuclei of cadmium sulfide crystallization in the presence of sulfide ions. According to spectrometric, electron-microscopic and capillary electrophoresis data, the particles are heteroaggregates of 3.2 x 6 nm in size. The fact that the particle size fits the size of the central tunnel of the RPE molecule and the similarity between the electrophoretic patterns of free RPE and the

Effects of two iron sources on iron and cadmium allocation in poplar (Populus alba) plants exposed to cadmium.

Effects of 10 microM cadmium (supplied as Cd nitrate) on the utilization and allocation of iron (Fe) were investigated in poplar (Populus alba L.) plants grown in nutrient solution with Fe(III)-EDTA or Fe(III)-citrate as the Fe source. The effects of Cd were also compared with those of Fe deprivation. The accumulation of Fe in roots was 10-fold higher in plants grown with Fe-citrate than with Fe-EDTA. Cadmium decreased leaf chlorophyll concentrations and photosynthetic rates, and these decreases were more marked in plants grown with Fe-citrate than with Fe-EDTA. In both Fe treatments, addition

Validity of cadmium concentration in rice as the "dose" of the dose-response relationship between cadmium intake and renal dysfunction.

It is well known that cadmium (Cd) causes renal dysfunction such as increase of beta(2)-microglobulin excretion into urine. Although Cd in rice seems to be one of the largest sources of total Cd intake in Japan, there are very few studies that have epidemiologically clarified the relationship between Cd concentration in rice (Cd-R) and renal dysfunction, because such studies are basically ecological studies, in which confounding factors are difficult to take into consideration. To derive safety levels for foodstuff from Cd-R, it is essential to evaluate the effect of confounding factors. Thus,

Urinary excretion of cadmium, protein, beta-2-microglobulin and glucose in individuals living in a cadmium-polluted area.

Urine was collected from 289 inhabitants of a cadmium-polluted quarter of Stadskanaal. The excretion of cadmium, protein, beta-2-microglobulin and glucose were determined. After being divided according to sex and to smoking habits, the results of the inhabitants were compared with those of 293 controls. In inhabitants as well as controls, cadmium excretion was age-dependent. Cadmium excretion in females increased faster with age than in males. In male-smoker controls, cadmium excretion was significantly higher (p less than 0.001) than in male-non-smoker controls. In male-non-smoker inhabitants

Cadmium-induced hepatic and renal injury in chronically exposed rats: likely role of hepatic cadmium-metallothionein in nephrotoxicity.

Rats were injected sc with 0.5 mg Cd/kg, 6 days/week, for up to 26 weeks. Hepatic and renal function and tissue Cd and metallothionein (MT) content were determined in tissues and plasma at various times after Cd injection. Cd in liver and kidney increased linearly for the first 10 weeks of treatment, but thereafter hepatic concentrations of Cd decreased by 33% whereas the content of Cd in kidney remained constant. MT in liver and kidney increased linearly during the first 12 weeks of Cd treatment to 4400 and 2300 micrograms MT/g, respectively, but rose only slightly thereafter. Circulating con

Neurotoxic mechanisms of cadmium in neurodegenerative diseases.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic, bioaccumulative heavy metal increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders. This review systemically characterizes the molecular mechanisms underlying Cd-induced neurotoxicity, with particular emphasis on oxidative stress-mediated pathways that initiate interconnected processes including ferroptosis, mitochondrial impairment, disruption of calcium homeostasis, and chronic neuroinflammation. Evidence indicates that Cd exerts both convergent and disease-specific effects in neurodegenerative conditions. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), Cd ex

The Mechanisms of Cadmium Toxicity in Living Organisms.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal primarily found as a by-product of zinc production. Cd was a proven carcinogen, and exposure to this metal has been linked to various adverse health effects, which were first reported in the mid-19th century and thoroughly investigated by the 20th century. The toxicokinetics and dynamics of Cd reveal its propensity for long biological retention and predominant storage in soft tissues. Until the 1950s, Cd pollution was caused by industrial activities, whereas nowadays, the main source is phosphate fertilizers, which strongly contaminate soil and water and affect hu

Impact of cadmium exposure on swine enterocytes.

We tested cadmium (Cd2+) effects on porcine IPEC-J2 cells, which represent an in vitro model of the interaction between intestinal cells and both infectious and non-infectious stressors. Accordingly, we investigated the effects of low (2 μM) to moderate (20 μM) concentrations of Cd2+, in terms of pro-inflammatory gene expression and protein release, as well as of infectivity in a Salmonella typhimurium penetration model. Our data showed a significant (P < .001) increase of intracellular Cd2+ after 3, 6 and 24 h of exposure with respect to levels at 1 h. These data showed the ability of IPEC-J2

Cadmium potentiates toxicity of cypermethrin in zebrafish.

Co-occurrence of pesticides such as synthetic pyrethroids and metals in aquatic ecosystems raises concerns over their combined ecological effects. Cypermethrin, 1 of the top 5 synthetic pyrethroids in use, has been extensively detected in surface water. Cadmium (Cd) has been recognized as 1 of the most toxic metals and is a common contaminant in the aquatic system. However, little information is available regarding their joint toxicity. In the present study, combined toxicity of cypermethrin and Cd and the underlying mechanisms were investigated. Zebrafish embryos and adults were exposed to th

Thermodynamic study of the cerium-cadmium system.

Cadmium vapor pressures were determined over Ce-Cd samples by an isopiestic method. The measurements were carried out in the temperature range from 690 to 1080 K and over a composition range of 48-85 at% Cd. From the vapor pressures thermodynamic activities of Cd were derived for all samples at their respective sample temperatures, and partial molar enthalpies of Cd were obtained from the temperature dependence of the activities. With these partial molar enthalpies the Cd activities were converted to a common temperature of 823 K. By means of a Gibbs-Duhem integration Ce activities were calcul
