PURPOSE: The use of sodium thiosulfate, bisphosphonates, and cinacalcet for the treatment of calciphylaxis in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is discussed.
SUMMARY: Calciphylaxis, generally characterized by extraosseous calcification of soft tissues, typically occurs in patients with stage 4 or 5 CKD. Very little data are available regarding the treatment of calciphylaxis. The role of elevated calcium and phosphate concentrations and hyperparathyroidism as risk factors for calciphylaxis has led clinicians to explore therapies that modify these factors, including sodium thiosulfate, b

Sodium thiosulphate has been used in medicine for almost 100 years. There are some very important areas of application such as cyanide intoxications or the treatment of cisplatin toxicity. Till this day, this compound is almost unknown to most physicians. This is astonishing, especially because there are some promising reports in the literature describing a possibly wider area of application in different domains of medicine such as urology, nephrology or dermatology. Perhaps one of the most exciting and recent domains of sodium thiosulphate use is the treatment of calciphylaxis, providing new

Calciphylaxis is a very uncommon and severe disease which mainly appears in patients with chronic renal insufficiency. It presents with ischemia and necrosis of the skin, subcutaneous adipose tissue, muscles and rarely viscera. The pathogenetic mechanisms inducing calciphylaxis are for the most part unknown. The mortality rate of 80% in the first year is very high. Patients experience marked pain, recurrent infections and the constant risk of secondary sepsis. Even multidisciplinary therapeutic strategies are limited, although there are recent case reports providing promising new therapeutic o

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of calciphylaxis in the absence of renal failure in a patient with secondary hyperparathyroidism and low calcium/phosphorus product, in whom total parathyroidectomy resulted in relief of pain and healing of ulcerations.
METHODS: We present the clinical, laboratory, and pathologic findings in a 62-year-old woman with calciphylaxis in the absence of end-stage renal disease.
RESULTS: A 62-year-old woman presented with painful nonhealing bilateral calf ulcerations. Pathology examination of tissue specimens from surgical débridement revealed intravascular calcification

Calciphylaxis is a confusing disease process that affects people with end-stage renal disease. The prognosis of this increasingly common condition is poor and mortality rates range from 60% to 80% related to wound infection, sepsis, and organ failure. Its presenting sign is skin necrosis related to calcification of the arteriole microvasculature. The disease is painful and debilitating, particularly due to the necrotic wounds. Aggressive wound care to prevent infection is vital when eschar does not protect the wound and drainage is present, but debridement is contraindicated for wounds covered

Calciphylaxis is a dreaded complication of renal failure characterized by nodular subcutaneous calcification and painful tissue necrosis often leading to ulceration, secondary infection, and high mortality rates. The case of a woman receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis who had a typical clinical presentation of calciphylaxis confirmed by x-ray and technetium scan findings is described. After nonresponse to conventional therapy, treatment with intravenous sodium thiosulfate 3 times weekly was begun, and she had rapid and dramatic relief of signs and symptoms and improvement of te

Calciphylaxis is a poorly understood and highly morbid syndrome of vascular calcification and skin necrosis. Hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and secondary hyperparathyroidism are the factors implicated in the pathogenesis of calciphylaxis, which is generally identified in patients with hyperparathyroidism secondary to end-stage renal disease. It has also been observed in primary hyperparathyroidism, end-stage liver disease, and rheumatoid arthritis, in the absence of renal disease. There are few case reports of calciphylaxis occurring in hypercalcemia of malignancy. An unusual case is report

We present the case of a 69-year-old woman with calciphylaxis due to primary hyperparathyroidism. A 0.5-g parathyroid adenoma was surgically removed, which resulted in complete recovery of the patient. Review of the literature revealed 7 other cases of calciphylaxis due to primary hyperparathyroidism and showed that prompt surgical removal of the autonomous parathyroid gland lesion results in clinical recovery of calciphylactic skin lesions.

Calciphylaxis or calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA) is an infrequent complication in patients with renal failure. Its manifestations range from ischemia to gangrene especially in areas of adiposity. Penile calciphylaxis is very rarely seen. Treatment can be medical or surgical. Sodium thiosulphate has shown to be an efficient treatment. Here were present a case of 74-year-old male who presented with penile calciphylaxis and was treated successfully with oral sodium thiosulphate.

INTRODUCTION: The clinical impact of vascular calcification is well established in the context of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, but other clinical syndromes, such as calciphylaxis, although less frequent, have a significant impact on chronic kidney disease.
METHODS: Case report of a 27-year-old woman, who had complained of bilateral pain in her toes for 3 days, with the presence of small necrotic areas in the referred sites. She had a history of type 1 diabetes (25 years ago), with chronic kidney disease, on peritoneal dialysis, in addition to rheumatoid arthritis. She was admitted

A 70-year-old man with history of metastatic well-differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma was presented to the hospital with a painful left lower extremity ulcer which started around 3 months prior to presentation. He was treated with antibiotics for cellulitis on multiple occasions with no improvement in his symptoms. On initial laboratory evaluation, he was found to have acute kidney injury and a normal calcium level. The patient underwent a skin biopsy and was found to have cellulitis and calciphylaxis of small-sized and medium-sized vessels. Since the patient did not have any underlying ri

Calciphylaxis is a rare and potentially fatal disease that affects the subcutaneous layer of the skin. It is a calcific vasculopathy induced by a systemic process that causes occlusion of small blood vessels. The mortality rate for individuals diagnosed with calciphylaxis is estimated between 52% and 81% with sepsis being the leading cause of death. Uraemic calciphylaxis and its known effective treatments are well documented in the literature. Unfortunately, there is no known effective treatment for non-uraemic calciphylaxis. Most of the current treatments for non-uraemic calciphylaxis are der

Calciphylaxis is a rare life-threatening form of skin necrosis. Although traditionally observed in patients with end-stage renal disease and/or hyperparathyroidism, calciphylaxis has also been reported to occur in 'non-traditional' patients with normal renal and parathyroid function. We report a case of warfarin-induced calciphylaxis treated successfully with sodium thiosulphate and discuss the role of Vitamin K2 as a potential therapeutic option in the management of warfarin-induced calciphylaxis.

Calciphylaxis is a rare disease which has been increasingly reported in recent decades and has consequently shifted into the focus of clinical and scientific research. The clinical picture is characterized by extensive ischemic ulcerations of the skin and subcutis. Histologically, the small vessels in these lesions show prominent calcifications. Due to the extensive areas of ulceration and necrosis as well as frequently present comorbidities, patients with calciphylaxis are prone to infection and sepsis. In this work, we describe the case of a female kidney-transplant patient with vasculitis w

BACKGROUND: Among the complications of chronic renal failure is a syndrome of medial calcification of small- to medium-sized arteries associated with ischemic necrosis of the skin and other organ systems, leading to gangrene and a poor prognosis. The syndrome has been reviewed in the renal, dermatologic, and surgical literature under the term calciphylaxis, which describes a postulated pathogenetic mechanism whereby sensitization to an endogenous or exogenous substance (such as parathyroid hormone) predisposes to calcium deposition after exposure to a challenging agent. Myopathy has rarely bee

Calciphylaxis is a rare condition found in patients with end-stage renal disease and secondary hyperparathyroidism. We describe two cases of prominent cutaneous manifestations of calciphylaxis in which skin lesions were refractory to topical treatments. We also include a brief description of calciphylaxis.

Calciphylaxis occurs in renal transplant patients more frequently than in chronic hemodialysis patients. It can occur in a patient with normal renal function who is also normocalcemic. Early parathyroidectomy can lead to healing of the skin lesions and prevent death of sepsis.

Calciphylaxis is a devastating disease characterized by painful ischemic necrotic skin lesions, primarily affecting patients with end-stage kidney disease. Its incidence has significantly increased over the past decade. Despite substantial morbidity and mortality, the pathogenesis of calciphylaxis remains poorly understood, and currently there are currently no approved treatments available. Diagnosis largely relies on clinical suspicion; skin biopsy may be useful but is not essential, particularly when biopsy risks outweigh benefits. Effective management requires a multidisciplinary approach.

Nonosseous abnormalities are often seen on bone scans and can be related to a wide variety of pathology ranging across vascular, infection, and inflammatory etiology. Diffuse soft tissue radiotracer uptake on bone scans is typically attributed to renal or metabolic derangements. Calciphylaxis is the deposition of calcium in small blood vessels, skin, and other organs leading to vascular obstruction and skin necrosis. It is a rare disorder with unknown pathophysiology. Diagnosis of calciphylaxis is challenging and requires an interdisciplinary approach including clinical findings, laboratory re
