An evaluation of the clinical, cytological, infectious and histopathological features of feline acne.

Clinical, cytological, microbial and histopathological features of feline acne were investigated in 22 cats referred or volunteered to a veterinary dermatology practice in the south-west region of the USA. For comparison, same parameters were evaluated in five unaffected pet cats. Additionally, all cats were evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for the presence of feline calicivirus (FCV) and feline herpes virus (FHV-1) in acne lesions. The age of onset of acne in affected cats ranged from 6 months to 14 years with a median of 4 years. The most common dermatologic lesions were comedones (73

Feline ocular and respiratory infections: a retrospective analysis of clinical cases submitted to Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (2012-2022).

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to retrospectively assess the pathogens associated with feline ocular and respiratory diseases in routine diagnostic samples submitted to Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories. Furthermore, pathogens detected by the respiratory PCR panel in the upper vs lower respiratory tract were compared (specimen separation at pharynx). METHODS: Test records from feline ocular and respiratory PCR panels were collected from 2012 to 2022. While the ocular panel targets feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV), feline calicivirus (FCV) and Chlamydia felis, the respiratory p

Epidemiology of a Hybrid Swarm: Evidence of 11 Feline Infectious Agents Circulating in a Population of Sympatric European Wildcat Hybrids and Free-Living Domestic Cats, in Scotland.

Hybridisation between wild and domestic species poses a serious challenge to conservation management and can, potentially, lead to extinction. Alongside it, disease transmission will inevitably occur. However, the link between these two phenomena has historically been neglected. In Scotland, the European wildcat is particularly threatened by hybridisation with the domestic cat, a process promoted by long-term habitat loss, human encroachment, and persecution. Between 2015 and 2019, free-living cats (n = 120) were captured in six conservation priority areas of northern Scotland. Samples were co

Seroprevalences to viral pathogens in free-ranging and captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) on Namibian Farmland.

Cheetah populations are diminishing rapidly in their natural habitat. One reason for their decline is thought to be a high susceptibility to (infectious) diseases because cheetahs in zoos suffer from high disease-induced mortality. Data on the health status of free-ranging cheetahs are scarce, and little is known about their exposure and susceptibility to infectious diseases. We determined seroprevalences to nine key viruses (feline herpesvirus 1, feline calicivirus, feline parvovirus, feline coronavirus, canine distemper virus, feline immunodeficiency virus [FIV], puma lentivirus, feline leuk

Feline vaccination protocols: is a consensus emerging?

Three international panels have been established over the past 11 years to provide veterinarians with guidelines on the use of feline vaccines. These are the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) Feline Vaccine Advisory Panel, the World Small Animal Association Vaccine Guidelines Group (WSAVA VGG) and the European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases (ABCD). The major recommendations of these three panels are summarised to show areas of agreement and areas of discrepancy. While the recommendations of the three groups are not fully aligned, all agree that core vaccines (those that every

A pre- and during Pandemic Survey of Sars-Cov-2 Infection in Stray Colony and Shelter Cats from a High Endemic Area of Northern Italy.

Cats are susceptible to infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Whilst a number of studies have been performed worldwide on owned cats, limited data are available on stray, colony or shelter cats. We investigated SARS-CoV-2 infection in a stray cat population before and during human outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 in cities in the Lombardy region in northern Italy, a high endemic region for SARS-CoV-2, using serological and molecular methods. A cohort of different samples were collected from 241 cats, including frozen archived serum samples from 136 cats collected

Crude Extracts of Talaromyces Strains (Ascomycota) Affect Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) Resistance to Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus.

Viruses contribute significantly to the global decline of honey bee populations. One way to limit the impact of such viruses is the introduction of natural antiviral compounds from fungi as a component of honey bee diets. Therefore, we examined the effect of crude organic extracts from seven strains of the fungal genus Talaromyces in honey bee diets under laboratory conditions. The strains were isolated from bee bread prepared by honey bees infected with chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV). The antiviral effect of the extracts was also quantified in vitro using mammalian cells as a model system

Cerebral cysticercosis in a wild Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) in Bhutan: A first report in non-domestic felids.

The endangered Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is a keystone species playing an essential role in ecology as well as in the social and spiritual lives of the Himalayan people. The latest estimate of the Bengal tiger population in Bhutan accounts for 103 individuals. Infectious organisms, including zoonotic parasites causing high burden in human health, have received little attention as a cause of mortality in tigers. Taeniosis/cysticercosis, caused by the cestode Taenia solium, is considered one of the major neglected tropical diseases in Southeast Asia. We present here a case of neurocy

High detection rate and genetic diversity of feline caliciviruses in an island population of feral cats with/without oral lesions.

Although feline caliciviruses (FCVs) (Family Caliciviridae) have been studied extensively in household and shelter cats, limited information is available on FCVs in feral cat (Felis catus) populations. We report here high FCV detection rates (27.77%, 30/108) in oral samples from feral cats on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts. Fourteen (46.66%) of the FCV positive cats exhibited oral lesions that were characteristic of FCV infection. Based on analysis of VP1 sequences, the FCV strains from St. Kitts (FCP strains) formed two phylogenetically distinct clusters within FCV genotype-I, and exhibite

Ultrasound-Treated Ethanolic Extracts of Endemic Mount Ida Plants (Sideritis trojana and Hypericum kazdaghensis) Show Antiviral and Antibacterial Potential Against Norovirus Surrogates and Foodborne Bacteria.

Human noroviruses and persistent bacterial pathogens remain major food-safety concerns. This screening study compared 40% (v/v) ethanolic extracts (EE) and ultrasound-treated ethanolic extracts (UTE) of the endemic Mount Ida plants Sideritis trojana Ehrend. and Hypericum kazdaghensis Gemici & Leblebici. Feline calicivirus (FCV) and murine norovirus (MNV) served as cultivable human-norovirus surrogates; four reference bacteria were examined by disc diffusion. Ultrasound treatment was associated with higher measured total phenolic content (approximately 2.2- to 3.8-fold) and antioxidant capacity

Chlamydia infection in cats in New Zealand.

Conjunctival swabs collected in 1991-92 from 333 pedigree and non-pedigree cats were tested for the presence of Chlamydia spp. antigen using an ELISA antigen kit. Forty (18.4%) of the 217 samples from cats with conjunctivitis were positive. Seven (6%) of 116 samples from cats which were in contact with cats with conjunctivitis but which showed no clinical signs at the time of sample collection were positive. Positive-testing cats were frequently from multi-cat households. Chlamydia spp. is present and associated with conjunctivitis in cats in New Zealand. Infection may occur concurrently with

Oral Disease and Microbiota in Free-Roaming Cats.

Oral health status was evaluated in 34 free-roaming cats that were submitted to a Trap-Neuter-Return program. Only 38.2% of individual cats showed oral disease. Periodontal disease (PD) was present in 6 cats ( 17.6%). Four cats (11.8%) showed feline gingivostomatitis, and clinical evidence of feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions was detected in only 3 animals (8.8%) by probing, but radiological studies would be necessary for reliable detection. Signs of PD occurred in 31.6% of teeth; only the less severe stages of PD were present. No retention of deciduous teeth, malocclusion, tumors, or de

Prevalence of select infectious agents in inflammatory aural and nasopharyngeal polyps from client-owned cats.

Benign, inflammatory polyps may affect the nasopharynx and auditory canal of cats. It has been proposed that inflammation induced by infectious disease agents could trigger polyp formation. The objective of this pilot study was to determine the prevalence of feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV), Mycoplasma species, Bartonella species and Chlamydophila felis nucleic acids in polyp tissues collected from 30 clinically affected cats. Samples collected from the tympanic bulla from 12 clinically normal cats were also assayed. DNA or RNA of some of the target agents were amplified

Human norovirus cultivation models, immune response and vaccine landscape.

Norovirus infections are a leading cause of gastroenteritis worldwide. Despite the substantial global health burden and economic impact, there are currently no approved antiviral therapeutics or vaccines. Additionally, much of our knowledge of norovirus comes from experiments using surrogate viruses, such as murine norovirus and feline calicivirus. The challenge surrounding human norovirus research arises from a lack of robust cell culture systems and efficient animal models. In this review, we explore recent advances in the in vitro cultivation of human norovirus and reverse genetics systems

Quantitative multiplex detection of 9 feline respiratory pathogens with enhanced sensitivity: a cost-effective integrated platform combining RT-PCR/PCR and capillary electrophoresis.

Pathogen infections and coinfections are critical determinants of feline upper respiratory tract disease; although the etiologic agents are diverse, their clinical manifestations often overlap. Established detection panels for feline upper respiratory tract infections (FURTIs) primarily focus on core pathogens-feline calicivirus (FCV), felid alphaherpesvirus 1 (FeAHV1), Mycoplasmopsis felis (MF), Chlamydia felis (CF), Bordetella bronchiseptica (BB), and influenza A virus (IAV)-and frequently do not incorporate emerging zoonotic agents (e.g., SARS-CoV-2) and overlooked streptococcal species (St
