The inhibitory activities of the leachates and volatiles from 53 plant species (spices and herbs) were evaluated against lettuce (Lactuca sativa "Great Lakes 366") seedling growth using the sandwich and dish pack methods, respectively. With the sandwich method, parsley (Petroselinum sativum) showed the strongest inhibitory effect on lettuce radicle growth (77%), followed by tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) (72%). Convulsive therapy (COT) is a major European contribution to the psychiatric armamentarium and biological psychiatry. COT was introduced in psychiatry by László Meduna, a Hungarian neuropsychiatrist. Volatile chemicals in a dichloromethane extract from a steam distillate of juniper berry fruit (Juniperus drupacea L.) and its two column chromatographic fractions (eluted with hexane and ethyl ether) were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Unilateral inspiratory and expiratory nasal resistance to airflow were measured in 35 subjects using active anterior rhinomanometry. No significant difference was found between inspiratory and expiratory resistance. Inhalation of a mixture of aromatics, camphor, menthol, oil of pine needles and methyl salicylate had no effect on inspiratory or expiratory nasal resistance. Factors influencing inspiratory and expiratory resistance and the actions of aromatics are discussed.
