Establishing the incidence and timing of hypoglycemia at a residential diabetes camp.

AIMS: To establish the incidence and timing of hypoglycemia at a week-long residential diabetes camp for children. We hypothesized that hypoglycemia would occur more frequently during the first two days of camp and following evening all-camp games. METHODS: 225 children (mean age 12.0 ± 2.3 years, 56% female, mean hemoglobin A1c 8.4% [71.6 mmol/mol]) had blood glucose (BG) levels obtained before meals, at bedtime, and as needed to detect hypoglycemia. Insulin adjustments were made by medical staff according to camp protocol and at the discretion of medical staff during camper check-in. RESUL

The Extracellular cAMP-Adenosine Pathway in Airway Smooth Muscle.

In the respiratory tract, intracellular cAMP has a key role in the smooth muscle relaxation induced by the β2-adrenoceptor/Gs protein/adenylyl cyclase axis. In other tissues, cAMP also works as an extracellular messenger, after its efflux and interstitial conversion to adenosine by ectoenzymes. The aim of this study was to identify cAMP efflux and the "extracellular cAMP-adenosine pathway" in the airway smooth muscle. First, we tested the ability of β2-adrenoceptor agonists formoterol or fenoterol to increase the extracellular cAMP in isolated tracheal rings from adult male Wistar rats. The ef

Role of EPAC in cAMP-Mediated Actions in Adrenocortical Cells.

Adrenocorticotropic hormone regulates adrenal steroidogenesis mainly via the intracellular signaling molecule cAMP. The effects of cAMP are principally relayed by activating protein kinase A (PKA) and the more recently discovered exchange proteins directly activated by cAMP 1 and 2 (EPAC1 and EPAC2). While the intracellular roles of PKA have been extensively studied in steroidogenic tissues, those of EPACs are only emerging. EPAC1 and EPAC2 are encoded by the genes RAPGEF3 and RAPGEF4, respectively. Whereas EPAC1 is ubiquitously expressed, the expression of EPAC2 is more restricted, and typica

[Pediatric case series in an ophthalmic camp in Turkana (Kenya)].

INTRODUCTION: Turkana is the largest district in Kenya, situated in the Northwest of the country. It features a semi-nomadic population of 850,000. Around 60% of population lives below the poverty threshold. The ratio of doctors is 1:75,000 inhabitants. Five ophthalmologists took part in the last deployment in November. Local staff had previously selected the patients from the rural areas, as well as in Lodwar, the capital of the district. Of the 371 patients who attended the clinic, 128 required surgery. OBJETIVE: To describe the pediatric population attended to in the last «Turkana Eye Proj

Compartmentalization of distinct cAMP signaling pathways in mammalian sperm.

Fertilization competence is acquired in the female tract in a process known as capacitation. Capacitation is needed for the activation of motility (e.g. hyperactivation) and to prepare the sperm for an exocytotic process known as acrosome reaction. Although the HCO3(-)-dependent soluble adenylyl cyclase Adcy10 plays a role in motility, less is known about the source of cAMP in the sperm head. Transmembrane adenylyl cyclases (tmACs) are another possible source of cAMP. These enzymes are regulated by stimulatory heterotrimeric Gs proteins; however, the presence of Gs or tmACs in mammalian sperm

Regulation of sheep oocyte maturation using cAMP modulators.

Physical removal of mammalian cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) from ovarian follicles results in spontaneous resumption of meiosis, largely because of a decrease in cAMP concentrations, causing asynchrony between cytoplasmic and nuclear maturation and decreased oocyte developmental competence. The aim of this study was to modulate cAMP concentrations within ovine COCs to delay spontaneous nuclear maturation and improve developmental competence. Abattoir-derived sheep COCs were cultured for 2 hours (pre-IVM) in 100 μM forskolin (FSK) plus 500 μM 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX). Pre-IVM (100 μ

Reportable neurologic diseases in refugee camps in 19 countries.

BACKGROUND: Approximately one-third of refugees worldwide live in refugee camps. Selected neurologic diseases are actively reported in some refugee camps. METHODS: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees monitors health visits in refugee camps with the assistance of more than 25 partner organizations using standardized case definitions. Neurologic diseases were selected and searched for the years 2008 to 2011. The number of health care visits for a neurologic disease was calculated and divided by the aggregated number of reporting months available for each refugee camp ("visits per

Cryptosporidiosis outbreak at a summer camp--North Carolina, 2009.

In July 2009, local, regional, state, and federal public health officials investigated a cryptosporidiosis outbreak at a youth summer camp in North Carolina. The investigation identified 46 laboratory-confirmed and probable cryptosporidiosis cases at the camp. Analyses of data from a retrospective cohort study of staff members revealed that eating ham from a sandwich bar that included camp-grown raw produce and sharing a cabin with an ill person were significantly associated with illness. Cryptosporidium isolates from stool specimens of livestock and humans at the camp were of the identical Cr

Regulators of platelet cAMP levels: clinical and therapeutic implications.

Platelets are indispensable for primary haemostasis, but their function needs to be tightly regulated to prevent excessive platelet activity, possibly leading to atherothrombotic events. An important mediator of the platelet activity is cyclic AMP (cAMP), which inhibits platelet aggregation. Intracellular cAMP levels are regulated via the Gs and Gi alpha subunits of heterotrimeric G proteins, which couple to adenylyl cyclase to respectively stimulate or inhibit cAMP production. Binding of a ligand to its G protein-coupled seven-transmembrane receptor activates these G proteins. In this review,

Regulation of self-incompatibility by acetylcholine and cAMP in Lilium longiflorum.

Elongation of pollen tubes in pistils of Lilium longiflorum cv. Hinomoto after self-incompatible pollination was here found to be promoted by acetylcholine (ACh) and other choline derivatives, such as acetylthiocholine, l-alpha-phosphatidylcholine and chlorocholinechloride [CCC; (2-chloroethyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride]. Moreover, the elongation was promoted by neostigmine, a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE; acetylcholine-decomposing enzyme) (EC 3.1.1.7.) and activities of this and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT; acetylcholine-forming enzyme) (EC 2.3.1.6.) in pistils were as

Mumps outbreak at a summer camp--New York, 2005.

On July 26, 2005, the Sullivan County Health Department (SCHD) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) were notified of a cluster of cases of parotitis among campers and staff members at a summer camp. An investigation conducted by NYSDOH identified 31 cases of mumps, likely introduced by a camp counselor who had traveled from the United Kingdom (UK) and had not been vaccinated for mumps. This report summarizes the results of the subsequent investigation by NYSDOH, which determined that, even in a population with 96% vaccination coverage, as was the case with participants in the s

Cell entry and cAMP imaging of anthrax edema toxin.

The entry and enzymatic activity of the anthrax edema factor (EF) in different cell types was studied by monitoring EF-induced changes in intracellular cAMP with biochemical and microscopic methods. cAMP was imaged in live cells, transfected with a fluorescence resonance energy transfer biosensor based on the protein kinase A regulatory and catalytic subunits fused to CFP and YFP, respectively. The cAMP biosensor was located either in the cytosol or was membrane-bound owing to the addition of a tag determining its myristoylation/palmitoylation. Real-time imaging of cells expressing the cAMP bi

Tick exposure and Lyme disease at a summer camp in Maryland.

After investigating an outbreak of Lyme Disease among counselors at a summer camp in Kent County, Maryland in 1994, we wanted to determine the incidence of Lyme Disease (LD) at the camp the following summer and identify risk factors for tick exposure. Any ticks that were detected on campers' skin or clothing were collected by the camp nurse and we studied them for infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. In addition, we sent detailed questionnaires home with the 1,623 campers. A total of 537 campers returned the questionnaire and 200 had found ticks on their skin or clothing while at camp. Risks w

Dissociative symptoms and amnesia in Dutch concentration camp survivors.

We examined to what extent dissociative phenomena in concentration camp survivors are related to post-traumatic stress symptoms. Self-reports of amnesia for traumatic war events and other dissociative experiences were studied in a sample of 31 Dutch survivors of World War II (WWII) Japanese concentration camps. Seventeen survivors treated for war-related psychiatric symptoms were compared to 14 concentration camp survivors who had no psychiatric diagnosis. Although survivors who received treatment scored significantly higher on the Impact of Event Scale and the Post-Traumatic Symptom Scale tha
